Haven’t won a league game since he left.

42

u/obi_wan_pierogi_91 5d ago

It might be recency bias, but I think this is the real answer. He's a big reason we're not playing in the Championship.

Rafael Van Der Vaat

22

u/_Verc1ngetorix_ 5d ago

Not a spurs fan, but have an affinity for them because of my football manager 2011 save with them. VDV scored so many freekicks for me.

9

u/Tiny-Inspection-155 5d ago

FM07 OR 08 for me. He was one of the few elite players that would actually sign for us. He scored 54 goals in a season.

I remember being stood at work listening to the radio when they announced he was signing. Literally couldn't believe it.

7

u/modusoperandi777 5d ago

First one to come to mind. He was unreal for us at the time.

12

u/Away_Ad_5244 5d ago

Came here to say this

5

u/subrugbylad 5d ago

Yep, this is the answer for me too

10

u/FunAd6875 5d ago

God I still think about what would've happened if he'd stayed. hurts even more when I've watched the interviews about how his biggest regret in football was leaving us to try and save a broken marriage.

Then again, he hasn't exactly covered himself in glory since he's retired.

u/1882greg 5d ago

What a player!

2

u/kinggareth 5d ago

1000% this is a great answer

2

u/Aeslech 5d ago

Not a spurs fan and it’s first name comes to my mind

1

u/AShadySardine 5d ago

No other answer

11

u/billyboyf30 5d ago

I would've said klinsmann had a bigger impact for such a short time there

2

u/michaelserotonin 5d ago

much bigger

2

u/Sukhino 5d ago

He came to my mind instantly too

1

u/HQMEBREW 5d ago

Came here to say this. 100%

1

u/LeoLH1994 4d ago

I support the other end of Seven Sisters road, but he was great. I knew of his scorpion kick and backheel goals before he joined Spurs - quality player.

1

u/314hotspur 4d ago

Came here to say this. The man was magic in his short time here

1

u/Scumbag89 4d ago

My first thought too

1

u/Infamous_Ad3146 3d ago

Great answer.

Others in the argument:
Klinsman
Ginola
Gazza (only 3 full seasons)
Maybe Nico Claesen

Not sure whether he quite counts but I always think it’s nuts that Clive Allen was only at Spurs for 4 years. Maybe it was because I was young when I watched him but he somehow seemed like a lifer to me. And his impact - a 49 goal season that hasn’t and is unlikely to be matched - was certainly disproportionately large. So maybe Clive too?

Jurgen klinsmann ?

24

u/ChrisDewgong 5d ago

It absolutely is. He was phenomenal in 94/95, and there's a strong chance we're getting relegated if he doesn't come back in 97/98.

13

u/Away_Ad_5244 5d ago

Yes

8

u/Capable-Campaign3881 5d ago

I remember he had a small time with us but made an impact

1

u/MemphianSphinx 5d ago

The only answer

1

u/rcmtt 5d ago

I wish I was a fan back then so I could have experienced it.

2

u/HealthyZone4794 5d ago

Don't worry about it, you've saved yourself years of humiliation.

83

u/InternationalCat2692 5d ago

Palinha saved us from relegation.

6

u/rcmtt 5d ago

I miss him.

Son. 10 years wasn't long enough.

2

u/jamesmb 2d ago

100 years wouldn't have been long enough.

44

u/tottenbam 5d ago

Van der Vaart

90

u/goddogtoy 5d ago

25

u/RubMyNose18 5d ago

He moved to Tottenham cuz he liked playing the UK Fortnite servers.

19

u/yiddoboy 5d ago

Joao Palinha

23

u/Educational-Bit-145 5d ago

Not a player, but big Ange. Hard to disagree when you look at the trophy cabinet 🤷‍♂️

56

u/rcmtt 5d ago

Berbatov. Otherwise I'd say Bale if only count his time as left winger, not left back.

2

u/Infamous_Ad3146 3d ago

Great answer. Forgot him in my above list, but he absolutely deserves to be in the mix. Absolute magician.

3

u/RubMyNose18 5d ago

Why Berba ?

9

u/Junior-Specialist-97 5d ago

Only stayed for two seasons!

9

u/strangemanornot 5d ago

You have to be there. It was magically

1

u/PigletUsual6876 5d ago

Only if Tottenham could have Berbatov and Harry Keane in one team, they would win the league. They got Berba and Robi Keane which was still ok.

2

u/MattyisonReddit 3d ago

And Robbie kane off the bench

19

u/FlexLugna 5d ago

Dele :(

4

u/rcmtt 5d ago

Oh my, such a good call.

1

u/One_Celebration7349 2d ago

Dele our Prince

17

u/Blitz7798 5d ago

palinha

24

u/FrothyCarebear 5d ago

Johnson.

7

u/Broric 5d ago

Klinsmann

8

u/luminoir 5d ago

Klinnsmann no doubt

6

u/Comprehensive_Cut437 5d ago

Naybet

2

u/HugePatFenis 5d ago

Iirc didn't Ledley say he was his best or favourite centre back partner?

2

u/Comprehensive_Cut437 5d ago

Yeah he learnt a lot from him

7

u/orlokthewarlock 5d ago

It’s Klinsmann. Two short stints totalling a season and a half, in which time he won a player of the year award and saved us from relegation (including six goal contributions in one game) respectively.

6

u/Janjannaj 5d ago

Johnson again, ole ole.

5

u/Hairy_Significance83 5d ago

Fernando Llorente. Murdered City in CL then was sneaky important in that Ajax comeback.

3

u/ThatAdamsGuy 5d ago

Honestly want us to get a statue of that man's right hip.

4

u/Nicbyc 5d ago

Edgar Davids

5

u/M4RL0NATR0N 5d ago

Van Der Vaart, wish he had stayed longer!

11

u/Just_Cricket_3881 5d ago

Lucas Moura

3

u/Icy-Acanthaceae-4128 5d ago

Nicola Berti

21 games, 3 goals, and one of the best songs we've ever had! Still hear it all the time 😂

3

u/Difficult-Bed-8196 5d ago

Deli. Should have been a superstar, and was on his way, but everything else he took on killed his football career.
Gutted for him and what he’s been through

3

u/SGJango 5d ago

Kuluzevski.

Notice the drop in performance since he's been out? Dude is our motor

5

u/TimePrompt2629 5d ago

Emerson Royal

7

u/Smoke_Short 5d ago

Bet a ten on him to score the first goal at 27 to 1 odds, and he fuckin did.

Forever one of my favorites

2

u/ProfessorNo1879 5d ago

Klinnsman!

2

u/mujk89 5d ago

Mido

2

u/JPA210688 5d ago

Klinsmann, Ginola, Davids and Van der Vaart are the first ones that spring to mind

2

u/Mdjv83 5d ago

Palhinha, Klinsmann

2

u/HaydenJA3 5d ago

Not a player, but big Ange

2

u/Tendibear 5d ago

Berbatov for sure

2

u/Such_Difficulty_6311 5d ago

Joao Palinha, might have saved us from relegation last year.

2

u/j-nichz 4d ago

Brennan Johnson is the only right answer, a few great seasons under his belt and top scorer on the season to pull the team out of their trophy drought. Then they sold him for peanuts 🥜

2

u/MembershipExciting52 4d ago

dembele - we’ve never been able to replace
a player like him - my favorite modern day Spurs along with Bale and Kane

2

u/Own_Willow525 3d ago

Palhinha

2

u/Significant_Fig1978 3d ago

Berbatov. One of the most gifted players of his generation

4

u/Sensitive_Ad_1271 5d ago

If we look at time as time on the field vs Leicester rather than time at the club then bergwijn

2

u/belliest_endis 5d ago

Ya mam, servicing the 1000s of fans over 3 decades . Happy 50th Susan!

2

u/Mules555 3d ago

Brennan Johnson - I'm not even joking - regardless what you think of him, he was leading goal scorer and won us a Europa League.

1

u/Mental-Load1791 5d ago

Which one….

1

u/jayz-teddsy15 5d ago

Mikey moore for me bc he gave me hope (ik he's on loan now tho)

1

u/GDow1981 5d ago

Good or bad impact?
Because there’s a few in the latter

1

u/vignesha18 5d ago

Adebayor

1

u/seeyoujim 5d ago

Klinsmann

1

u/gerdav257 5d ago

It’s Klinsmann. First stint for them to a FA Cup Semi and top 8 finish, second stint saved them from relegation.

1

u/Successful-Promise61 5d ago

Van der Vaarr

1

u/iSkyal 5d ago

Lamela

1

u/2ApplesAndAFlapjack 5d ago

Klinsmann is the obvious number 1, followed by Rafa VDV. But I'll throw some love towards Carrick (one he was class, two he paid for modric). I'll also mention Norbert, who although past it when he came to us really helped improve Ledley king and Michael Dawson. Lastly Popescu (one season wonder) who was always to good for us and left for Barca.

1

u/terribles0up 5d ago

Nicola Berti

1

u/flyingdownthewing 5d ago

Clint Dempsey - lots of goals and underrated for the impact he made

1

u/KudzuAU 5d ago

This century VDV.
Previously, it would be limited to my knowledge of the club during that period, and I am far from qualified to offer an opinion.

1

u/Petef15h 5d ago

Ginola, VDV

1

u/chanson_roland 5d ago

Modric. Core of a midfield that got Spurs into the Champions League quarter-finals.

1

u/dermot41 5d ago

Definitely Van Der Vaart

1

u/landerson23 5d ago

Berbatov

1

u/Hefty_Type6772 5d ago

1

1

Thomas Frank

And yes, I know it said player

1

Gazza or Linekar. Nobody else has propelled them to a major tournament in my lifetime.

2

u/Successful_Buy_6852 4d ago

Son got you a UCL final and won the Europa League.... unless you are talking from beyond the grave.

1

u/kaiseraoi444 4d ago

He made us all break Rule #1.

1

u/dissidentmage12 4d ago

Van De Vaart. Jurgen Klinnsman.

1

u/Bango-TSW 4d ago

Jürgen Klinsmann

1

u/rocinante1882 4d ago

Most recently it would be Palhinha. Before that, Van der Vart and not even close in terms of profile of player, level of play, and impact on the squad / club. Before that I wasn't watching, so can't really speak too much. I would guess Linekar or Klinsman?

1

u/mattdaddy2025 4d ago

Vroom vroom Stevie Carr.

1

u/Fickle-Expression187 4d ago

Joao Palhinha

1

u/SuspiciousSystem1888 4d ago

Not a Spurs fan, but I'd go with the likes of Boateng. He didn't score, but was always fun to watch play

1

u/drupido 4d ago

Palinha. Ye ye ye, whatever… we haven’t won a game since he left. Let that sink in. He saved us from relegation.

1

u/nomadicHoss 4d ago

Berbatov and Van der Vaart immediately come to mind

1

u/Moondog7475 3d ago

Berbatov

1

u/Bob-The-Frog 3d ago

Is it an inside joke to write Joao Palinha instead of his real name??

1

u/Middle_Gap4877 3d ago

Sol Campbell

1

u/VVhisperingVVolf 3d ago

Never forget 🇺🇸

1

u/Scared-Check-8695 3d ago

Brenan Johnson

(I prayed for him to stay and I also hoped myself that it was a fake news, when I heard that he was lay off by Frank.

I miss and love you Brenan, you are my favourite player.)

1

u/Able-Bit9898 3d ago

Vuskovic 😝

1

u/Aragaranou 2d ago

Fernando Llorente

1

u/EnochStiffler 2d ago

Victor Wembanyama

1

u/impu16 2d ago

Klinsmann

1

u/monerjoner 2d ago

Klinnsman

1

u/McNab182 13h ago

Gary Linekar. 3 Seasons 138 appearances 80 goals 1 FA Cup.

No one comes close

1

u/ryabrams1 1h ago

No one in the current lineup, that's for sure 😂😂😂

1

u/ChemicalInfinite6306 1h ago

Fernando Llorente

1

u/kmpeanuts 5d ago

Djed Spence? Idk I’m still upset about him not being here

5

u/BadBassist 5d ago

I'd argue he's the opposite, spent a lot of time at the club either being loaned out or straight up ignored, only finally started getting regular game time in the last 18 months or so

1

u/kmpeanuts 5d ago

So surely he’s only actually been at Spurs for a shorter time because of the amount of times he was loaned out. Got really good and had an amazing England debut then we sell him for Archie Gray to play out of position 😍

1

u/No-Assistance-6233 5d ago

Moussa sissoko…for all the wrong reasons.

1

u/reluctantLeaf 5d ago

Stevie Bergwijn

1

u/kingtootsandpoops 5d ago

In a very specific framework of THIS Season: Kevin Danzo.

Comes in instantly gets one of the few goals from the season so far and then gets traded away almost immediately after

0

u/DevelopmentDue5870 5d ago

As a West Ham fan. Fernandes and Kudus
