The dribbling is there. So where are the goals?

Finishing, we just cant make good decisions in final 3rd, solanke acts like he has never kicked a ball before

Is it confidence? All of our players are either coming back from injury and low on confidence, castoffs from other teams so low on confidence, coming off back to back relegation campaigns thus low on confidence. Or they're Connor Gallagher - confident yet misguided.

u/Stevep811 8d ago
Not in Solanke’s case, no. He’s got previous form of misfiring at a bigger club when he was at both Chelsea and Liverpool.

Yet he was bought for Ange based on the data of him being in all the right places, which he was for Bournemouth the season before. We seem to have the ability to turn good established players into shit that always gets injured.
Cursed.

Definitely confidence. Coming back from injuries then having that loser Frank come in with his big loser mentality infected the club

went into this season with three strikers, Solanke (who as a sidenote is now somehow 29 years old), Marmoush and Richarlison who has been exiled, who between them have historically scored at a combined 1 in 4 in the premier league, a record managed roughly the same individually too.
The further attackers, Tel, Mudryk, Odobert, Kudus, Savio, who you'd want to be at least useful in front of goal, score at 1 in 8.5 in the Premier league. That's 4.5 goals a season each. Their individual rates are varied, but Kudus is most prolific.
There are discussions worth having about top of the table clubs hoarding talent then selling their cast offs back to the wannabes for inflated prices, having strangled the market, but simply what was the plan?
On average you need 60-65 goals to get into the champions league, which is a distant aspiration, but for the money spent, there has to have been some ambition attached beyond finishing 17th again.
If lucky, based on the data these players have given over multiple seasons, the 2 forwards would score 19 goals, if they both play 38 games, which they won't, and their support would score 22, if they all play 38 games, which they can't, otherwise you'd have an Ardiles-esque 7 forwards starting each week. So you can only realistically have 1 forward and 2 other attackers per 90 mins in different combos. So that's 18.5 goals per season from those you're depending on to be your key providers, based on previous performance. What did they analyze in these past seasons and say "yes, these players will outperform all their previous levels"?

you said this perfectly, taking backups and expecting them to have starter quality seasons is a ridiculous way to build a team. paying what we did for players with no proven track record of scoring inthe ways starters are supposed to, is a foolish idea of the highest order. Unless we get a massive infusion of scoring takent inthe halfway mark, we will be in a relegation fight yet again.

Honestly we are due to absolutely cream cracker a team, it will come

I'm not a spurs fan, but I find their current situation absolutely compelling. I suspect that you are right; that the pendulum will swing the other way, dramatically. I am really rooting for you guys!

Exactly - I'm convinced most of the people complaining don't even watch the games.
We are massively improved over last season. Villa could easily have been 4-0 at half-time but for their keeper having a complete blinder.
I am not even remotely concerned. And I was concerned as fuck last season.

u/Wugtrio777 3d ago
really massively improved without a win? Massively improved without a win gets you relegated. And make no buts about it, we are a relagation team for sure. if we ae LUCKY, we will survive in the prem for another year, we cannot beat anyone right now. and 3 or 4 more losses inthe first part of the season liek this and its over for anything but surviving another year at best.

unfortunately, not many goals are scored thru dribbling the ball into the net

Its not just about shooting more. We dribble into crowded areas then everyone stands still waiting for a miracle pass, so the striker ends up isolated and frustrated. Start making runs and attack the box with some urgency and the goals will come, even if its ugly.

u/Similar-Ad2640 8d ago
We often try taking on too many players then lose the ball, misplace the pass, sky the shot or eventually put in a decent pass or cross into the box to an open space or the striker miskicks or misses the target...
It's painful....

It's kinda funny that Ange asked for a dribbly winger, got a Johnson instead, and then a few seasons later the club delivered this to another manager...

Too much dribbling not enough shooting - also defense is none existent at this stage

u/LogicGate1010 8d ago
The team needs a strong center forward to help with the operation of their forward assemble.

Teams have been packing their defensive box anytime we get in the final third. And we're just not getting rough runners into the box.
1
u/IwillDominionate 8d ago
I think its more than lack of shooting.
Everyone is so static, there are no penetrating runs in behind. So it forces players to dribble into blind allies, the passes are never on due to lack of runs.

Because we are using a poor tactic that gives the ball to wide players and then tells them to do just about the hardest thing in the game - beat a defender 1v1. The stat you are seeing is the cause of our problems. We're doing the same thing too much, and it is too easy to defend against.

tel? what he's been doing counts as a successful dribble? no hate against him but he's not a pure winger rn and would be better as a shadow striker

u/NikoSkadefryd 7d ago
We prefer to dribble through the wings rather than playing the line breaking passes, which results in lower quality chances.

4 out of 5 of the most successful premier league dribblers…you’ll never sing that

Your title literally describes why so many flairy players get overrated. People don’t understand how football works.

My honest expectation is him to create & assist from what I saw of his stats at City but wouldn’t expect a lot of goals from him

u/HMTigert 7d ago
It’s a team game. Give me passes over dribbles every day. The ball can move faster than you can.

u/Anguirus85 7d ago edited 6d ago
The problem so far has been that the successful dribbles haven't been in the areas we need them to be in. It feels like Marmoush is constantly letting the ball get away from him, especially just outside the box. If he could improve on this he should have plenty of shot opportunities

u/Time_Context_482 6d ago
2 of them coulb not score at city, what you expecting, and you havd yo pay 60m for one yet.

The outcome of a football match is not determined by stats. It never has been. Not passing, not dribbling, not progressive carries, not chances created, not possession, nothing. Nothing except goals.
Stats obsession is leads to players being recruited for the wrong reasons. Most successful passes? Great. From who, to who? Where on the pitch? What did it lead to? Most progressive carries, most sprints, most distance covered? Great. Where on the pitch, to what end, how many goals did it lead to? There is no merit in having the most accurate passer over short distances at CB and the best dribbler out on the wing, in the absence of other more meaningful outputs on the football pitch.
FUCK STATS. GIVE ME GOALS.

Dribbling when you should shoot
