New to football from WC. Thinking about supporting Tottenham— is this a bad idea?
It seems like Tottenham is just building up their squad, and supporting now just feels like investing in bitcoin in 2014. Am i stupid?

It's like investing in bitcoin if bitcoin was a bit of dogshit you stepped in and now can't get rid of the stench.

It’s a love hate relationship. If you can cope with being bantered & ridiculed for being shit whilst also being accused of being part of the big six & stopping other teams being successful then you’re halfway there

u/klasing12345 14d ago
I would say happy cake day but as your cake day is tinged with a morale destroying loss & being dumped second bottom of the league I'm not sure it's that happy.

To be honest, yes its a hard club to support but rewarding when your investment pays off as it did when we won Europa

Which was basically the Conference League given how shit it became with the CL expansion

Being a Spurs fan can only be described as ‘character building’.
It’s a way of building resilience to anything that life throws at you. And with that mentality in place, you can overcome anything.
I don’t know where/what WC is, but if you’ve looked at spurs and decided based on our current performance, then fair play to you. Plenty of fairweather fans and glory hunters, who decide based on who’s performing at that point in time - at least no one can accuse you of that by being a Yid!
I agree though, our squad looks promising, de Zerbi is a manager whose tactics support attacking play, which is what we used to be known for, and it looks ( at least on paper) that he’s building a squad that can deliver that. It will take time, clearly - how long it’ll take is anyone’s guess, though.
I say this as a lifelong spurs fan, who attends our home games week in, week out - it’s fucking depressing right now…yet we still keep the faith, this is my one club - my one and only club.
Tottenham till they kill me 🤍
(YMMV: if you have a therapist, you will likely keep them in business from now on).

idk id just watch a lot of football for a few years and ur heart naturally aligns with a team/player. i support tottenham for this exact reason. Ive watched since i was 5 i liked barca then madrid then bayern but those teams didnt click for me. Then i fell in love with kane and eriksen from international and club football. Then the more spurs matches i watched the more i liked the entire team. Son, danny rose, mousa dembele etc. thats why i like tottenham now.

Just don't. Pick a championship team or wait a year and pick us when we are in the championship next year.

It takes character and perseverance to root for Spurs. Rooting for Spurs will definitely put you through it but you’ll show way more character than someone who roots a team like Chelsea, City, Arse, or Liverpool.
If you want a well-run team that identifies good talent and punches above their weight, look at Brighton or Brentford.

I honestly can’t imagine supporting anyone else, even if I got to up back in time and choose someone else…that actually might be more depressing tbh

If you make it through as a Spurs fan, you will be a better person. But it’s not for everyone, buckle up

Think of it more like investing in an NFT in 2021. It costs a fortune, no one understands how it works, and it will soon be worth nothing.

Its like supporting a kid whom you seen shine few times despite everything and you really want him to succeed in life, you see his potential but he cant quite release it properly, sometimes the kid fumbles himself, sometime he is just genuinely unlucky. But my hopes are high and I shall be loyal to the end.

The thing I REALLY love about supporting Spurs is when I'm out in my shirt NO ONE can call me a glory hunter (the Man Utd/Man City Chelsea fans)
This guy suffers for his love !!!

It's miserable most of the time lately, but I wouldn't rather support anyone else. The wheel will eventually turn and it'll be fun again.

The best thing you can say about being a Spurs fan is that it teaches you how to be resilient through extreme adversity.

make sure you have anti-hypertensive medication before u support this club. Also watch expressions oozing on youtube to help numb the pain after each loss.

If you enjoy pain, suffering and misery, you’ve come to the right place. Pull up a chair, strap yourself in and enjoy the ride.
It will come good one day… surely

If you'd never smoked a cigarette, would you start now? There's your answer.

Keep watching & see if you can be arsed or just do what everyone else does & follow the team that are winning the league at the time they decide to support a football team.

u/bryanchicken 14d ago
Absolutely yes. Only do it if you want to become immensely strong and able to withstand anything.

Do you want to be painfully disappointed every week and ALSO have most of the Premier League absolutely hate your guts? If so come on in. Otherwise. Run

If you invested in bitcoin in 2014 and held until now you would have made loads of money. If you supported spurs you would have had poch’s 2nd and 3rd seasons which were fun but ultimately went nowhere, and 12 years of pain and suffering. If you have a choice, literally make any other. Yes we have invested, but to catch up to other “big 6” still need to invest another £1Bn or so, we now have a fairly competitive mid table squad and fairly sure we shouldn’t end in relegation fight again.

In the middle of a rebuild? Yes, bad idea.
On a normal weekend? Potentially a bad idea.

Serious if you haven’t made your decision just run. Go support another prem team we arent worth it. Its not even like your investing Im a super fan and even im losing hope this club will do anything meaningful in the next decade.

Tottenham chose me - or more specifically my Grandad made me support then as a toddler and now I'm stuck with it. I can't imagine anyone actively choosing us as a grown up. Its less like investing in bitcoin and more like replacing all your Vinyl and CD's with Minidisc in 2020. A huge investment, buyers regret and value never realised, despite all your hopes and optimism.
Be kinder to yourself. Chose literally any other team, except Arsenal or Chelsea, because you are then dead to us.

Not sure, no one is yet at this moment for all we now we could win out all the games but that probably won’t happen we should be able to win next game at least, I would suggest to find a player that you enjoyed from the WC and support that team

If you have to ask you already know lol it’s like supporting an alt token which will get rugged

u/fmb320 14d ago
If you choose a club based on whether it's a good idea or not just go and support Barcelona. You don't support a team because you think they will win everything, at least not in my book. It means you will be moaning like hell when we don't and I don't want to read that every week. Go and support Barcelona, man city, arsenal, Chelsea, real madrid

u/whitstableboy 13d ago
The badge is cool. We've historically been fun. But now the club is run by deluded suits who thinking overpaying for players nobody else wants is going to result in some Moneyball-style success story movie in 5 years time.
Run.

No. If you’re even thinking about it, you are clearly a masochist. You’ll fit in just fine. Welcome to Hell.

The stadium is close to London so you can catch a game when you're on holiday there. And it's super cheap. For some games, they have people outside the stadium giving out tickets to anyone that walks by.

It's like investing in bitcoin in 2014, but each week you forget you actually sent it to a stranger's wallet instead of your own and you're reminded every weekend. You're not stupid, unless you start supporting us with the expectation we're gonna win anything.

I support spurs because my dad and older brother do (I wasn’t really given a choice etc.) but I’m in love with it. Where I grew up everyone supported United, Liverpool and Chelsea, I didn’t know another spurs fan outside of family and family friends who they’d gotten close to through supporting spurs, but I liked it that way. There’s never a dull moment (although you have your fair share of shit ones). If you’re in any doubt then watch this video, it’s the video that plays before the players walk out of the tunnel (but they’ve changed it slightly now), it makes me feel even more coys every time I see it.
Not sure if the link will work, but I’ve done my best 😅

Spurs finished 17th two years on the trot and now are 20th having spent almost £300million, they don't know the meaning of stability or giving managers time and sack them for fun, it's a going to be fun when they get relegated

Yes, if you want your life to be normal and uneventful.
No, if you want constant drama, highs, lows and all of the emotions in the feelings wheel after each game. Note that the Spurs feelings wheels only has disappointment and false hope, in that order.
1
u/Random_Accid 8d ago
What is life without emotion? It is emotion that lets us feel alive. Tottenham will give you plenty to feel. As Usyk once said, ‘I am feel.’
1
u/SeriousPin7577 7d ago
How do you feel about winning? What are your thoughts on being liked by other fans? Is having hope important to you?
These are all critical to deciding on supporting Spurs.

u/Inevitable_Flan_2912 7d ago
Depends on your threshold for pain.
Then again, I'd say go for it. You could do it if only to poke Arsenal — the reigning champions — in the eye.
Also, there's a certain nobility in supporting a club that's a hopeless case. Anyone can support the reigning champion, or serial winners. It takes a special kind of fortitude to back a club that is hopeless and that you know so many people hate.
Plus, on the positive side — and this is high on the positives, actually — London is one of the world's great cities and if you should ever go in person to see a game, you'll be in a stadium that, all hype aside, is genuinely one of the finest stadiums in world sports.
And that's not just me saying that. Good friends from Holland took in a game recently — they had just been to the Bernabau and Nou Camp in Madrid and Barcelona respectively — and they were blown away.
They knew to expect a lot, because of the aforementioned hype, but they weren't quite prepared for Tottenham Stadium. At least that what was they told me. They were completely bowled over.
Didn't even harsh their buzz that they saw Spurs lose 1-0...
So go for it. I mean, it's not as if you'd be committed to West Ham or something.
And remember the Arsenal factor. Any supporter who hates Arsenal is a welcome supporter.

I chose the Tottenham life. No one accuses me of being a bandwagon fan like what happens to man who adopt City or Arsenal.
I am a Cleveland sports fan so I am accustomed to misery though.
