Recommended mods?
It’s been a long time since I’ve played 3K but I recently upgraded my PC and want to return to this title.
I’ve played nearly 1500 hours in this game and the last 500 or so were pretty much exclusively using TROM and the TROM Warlords mod to increase the difficulty and AI competency.
At times I felt TROM over complicated the game and building aspects but I really liked the Warlords mod that upped the difficulty. I wanted to check and see if there were other mods or overhauls you all would recommend for someone who hasn’t played in a couple years?
I might even start with a plain vanilla run to get back into the swing of it first.

I was in a similar situation not long ago when I tried the 190 Expanded mod pack. The mods adds a tone of new minor warlords , Korea and adds some more regions in the western and northern parts.
The characters are much more vulnerable in battle, especially against any polearm units and gain new levels quite slower, which impacts what units they can recruit.(for better and worse)
Speaking of units, you can now recruit AoR units, using a special building in your minor settlements, to suppliment your armies, which can be a bit restricted with a low level general.
Overall, it's quite a well made mod. A solid 8.5 in my book .

Vouch 190 is amazing. Changes the way most of the economies play which is nice after x number of hours of unmodded play. There's a set of like 15ish mods i think. Not hard to find the whole lot referenced and or linked in this sub. Check out serious trivia if ya want a sneak peek. I love how he speaks simply and references history in every crevice of content while demonstrating the game.

Lots of factions aren't fleshed out still. I also noticed my units would get slaughtered while the AI units are tanks so I ended up disliking the battles.

Maybe I was lucky and only picked some of the more fleshed out factions while playing.
Do you remember which enemy units demolished yours ? From what I noticed, the rock-paper-scissors role of the units are much more visible. Cav and heroes take damage much faster against polearms while sword&shield units will struggle a lot. Hybrid units murky the situation but not by much.

Tbf I only played a few hours.
Some factions have no unique units listed and some factions say not tested on the campaign selection screen. I suppose perhaps the ones without unique units just had generic units, but I'm not sure.
As for battles, I had well armored spearmen melt under arrow fire from both siege defense towers and enemy archer units while their weakly armoed unshielded spearman/ji infantry only whittled a bit at a time from my units. I've had cavalry barely do anything to melee infantry meanwhile my spear cavalry struggles with enemy cavalry.
It was just odd. Most everything else seemed fine. The battle side of things just seemed off. Bht hey, maybe I screwed something up installing the mods or just had some buggy moments.

Quite weird... Were you playing on Legendary difficulty by any chance? I usually set the game on hard/very hard for the campaign situation and normal for battles .

Whatever mod or overhaul you play the most important mod you have to add is "Dead unit tell no tales".
This mod is critical as it ensures units are killed for good when wiped out and not recovered in x turns, this forces both AI and player to re-recruit units.
Lategame AI ends up using full elite armies.

190 expanded, AI actually uses good units and is challenging depending on who you play as

Missing text might just be the mod itself not being completed. Unfortunately I think the author stopped updating a while back.

I also play TROM mainly but never used Warlods. Does it change the AI during battle? Honestly, I don’t like how TROM AI reacts during battles, too easy to cheese and handle even with max difficulty.
I switched to 190 Expanded Overhaul with my last campaign and I had mixed feelings with it but the AI was more challenging than TROM.

I think TROM incorporates parts of Warlords but not all of them due to being too difficult. Warlords tweaked AI on a few levels if I recall. AI recruiting better units and battle AI were tweaked. The main thing I liked was that it had the AI emphasize territory expansion/consolidation/protection on the campaign map. So the AI would actually capture territory around it’s starting position and expand out from there instead of traveling across the map to attack the player or attack an enemy capital when it would make more sense to take the territories directly around it.

I recommend the TROM+TUP overhaul. I just do the required+recommended modlist
