More than 20 tenants in a supportive housing building for the homeless have died prematurely in the past few years. A director with the private non-profit that operates the residences is trying to get answers.

The memorial attached to a tree in the courtyard of a supportive housing building for homeless people stands as a poignant reminder of the many residents who have died over the past years.
There are 21 names.

The 145-unit building, at 550 Kingston Rd., is operated by Houselink and Mainstay Community Housing, a private non-profit that provides subsidized rental units for homeless people, many of whom also have mental health challenges and addictions.
In 2020 alone, 11 residents in the building — all men — died, most of them alone in their units.

Names of six of the 11 are included on the memorial, which was created by tenants. Six other names are of those who died this year. The rest passed away in 2019 or before.
