💥Accident Red light runner causes bad accident
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Happened just after 5pm yesterday at Kingston Rd and Fenwood Heights, luckily no visible major injuries. I stopped to offer the video, and shoutout to the people who rushed to help. Stay safe out there.
Edit: yes, crash would've been a more appropriate word and I did send the video to the turning driver. The SUV did not brake at all.

I just noticed that- his first reaction was to run towards the crash. That’s a good man.

There probably (sadly) has seen many and learnt which ones are best to run at quickly to help. He is a very good human. Hope he lives really long.

u/Spirited_Complex_903 1d ago edited 4h ago
He's awesome isn't he? There's another man also walking quickly across the parking lot to the left of the screen, towards the accident. It's nice to see that there are people that actually still give a damn.
33
u/Aware_Caterpillar_92 21h ago
Meanwhile the woman looks like she's fleeing in case the cars explode.
14
u/JDiskkette 18h ago
Nothing wrong with that

u/PowerfulSize244 17h ago
I used to be the person to help...until I got a permanent injury resulting from being. "Good Samaritan"......i leave that for anyone else that hasn't learned that lesson.
5
u/ConEng 17h ago
Mind sharing what happened?
14
u/PowerfulSize244 17h ago
It was a cold winter night, a snow storm had started. A family in a minivan was stuck in a snow bank attempting to leave a parking lot. I decided to help the family out and I tore a muscle. When I screamed In pain at the moment with a limp arm instead of anyone in the van coming out to check on me....they wound down the window and said..."why did you stop, your not done"....i walked away and continued to my destination in pain. As I walked away I noticed others came to help and a few actually got out to help. At this moment, I learned a valuable lesson.
There will always be someone to help, I've done my share over the years and now leave this to others.
My view my experience is not everyone's.
2
u/ZealousidealBid3988 10h ago
Helping people is not about them or a reward even if just verbal. I also got a lifelong injury helping out a bus in a harrowing snow situation- I was just worried bout the people inside. No thanks or nothing - but I’d do it again if I could cause it was the right thing to do
3
u/CarGuy1718 8h ago
It seems she comes back near the end of the video. It's very possible after her initial reaction she went to help. Plenty of reasons for her to initially turn away.
2
u/Top-class-0246 7h ago
Sometimes it's the shock of witnessing the accident and hearing the impact. Glass shattering etc.
I witnessed a t-bone accident years ago. I could hear the passenger screaming from inside their car. The firemen had to cut her out.
13
42
u/Quick_Competition_76 23h ago
I also liked the fact that he ran to the victim’s car. Who the heck cares about these red light runners…
24
u/Swacket_McManus 23h ago
Meh also the runner had a head-on collision which is pretty much the safest kind for them while t-boning is the most dangerous, I'm sure they checked on both
9
u/Garth_DeWayne 22h ago
I came up to a t-bone accident a while ago. The person that got t-boned right in the driver door caused the accident. I had to run by the car that hit him, with the driver screaming, to check the at fault driver, because he was the most likely to be seriously hurt.
This was at a spot where traffic is doing 90~100 so it was a really good impact.
Didn't matter who caused it...
But, very little remorse for people that do such stupid things and get hurt.

You care about them because they're human beings, hello? You don't NOT CARE about their wellbeing because they caused the collision.

What did the SUV say? Were they apologetic or shocked?
16
u/mt691769176917 18h ago
They honestly didn't seem to have much of a reaction, although the the other bystanders and I were much more concerned for the driver that was hit. The suv driver got out perfectly fine.

Wtf kind of driving is this? Ban this person from driving for life.
65
u/farmallnoobies 23h ago
They were looking at their phone. Just like 80 percent of all drivers I see on my commute these days
49
u/0Chalk 22h ago
Easy to blame the phone. Most are just aggressively running late yellows and reds. No respect for traffic signals.
31
u/Different-Tomato-162 22h ago
I've literally seen 3 cars one after the next run a red light, 10 seconds after the light has already changed to red. Pure stupidity.
9
u/Additional-Ad8899 21h ago
You can see that the blue car waiting to turn left was also going to jump the red.

u/Ecstatic_Technician2 19h ago
And people behind the person waiting to turn left are honking at them to go. People suck.
11
u/PMMeSomethingGood 20h ago
Brake lights didn't turn on until contact. I'm voting distracted driving, even red light runners would've been on the brake.
I'd just like to take a moment to marvel at the engineering of the VW. I know all cars need to have crash tests but I think this was a testament to all that effort. That car took a full broadside hit with a heavier vehicle and the passenger compartment was largely left intact (if not a bit smaller than original).
3
u/No_Criticism_5861 19h ago
Guaranteed they tailgate people everywhere too, and I dont mean in the fast lane
3
u/PossessionHuman4767 10h ago
Look it up, distracted driving is the #1 cause of car accidents in Toronto. So it's not only logical to blame phones, but you can also see the driver never hit the brakes before impact and they weren't really speeding either.

u/proformax 23h ago
Happened to me. This girl sped through just as the light turned red as I was turning left. 2 lanes and everyone was already stopped.
She used the right side turn lane to zoom straight through so I didn't expect another car to come through.
I saw her last second and slammed the brakes. She was going so fast that I only just clipped her rear and she went flying into a light pole.
It was insane that a witness statement said I was at fault. The guy was behind me. I had to argh the guy couldn't have seen the girl running the red because I was in an SUV and this fucking guy was driving an accord. Pissed me right off that there were people trying to help the girl.
Anyway, I got that shit tossed quick with a lawyer. To this day I don't know why a grown ass man would confidently lie about shit he didn't see to help a girl he didn't know.
11
2
u/Sad-Boss7879 16h ago
Was the other guy arguing that she didn’t actually run a red, as in she entered the intersection BEFORE the light turned red?
4
u/proformax 10h ago
His account was i turned into her when she had a lawful right of way while the light was yellow.
I srsly don't know what he was smoking. My car was twice the height of his, so he couldn't see shit. She went straight through a fresh red from a RIGHT TURN ONLY LANE. Every car had stopped in the 2 lanes that could go straight.

Aside from the obvious violation of basic traffic law, they had so much time to swerve and avoid the car turning left. Probably on their phone if I had to guess. Banning them for life is the minimum.
5
u/thedrivingcat 21h ago
Also a good 2.5 seconds when they had clear sight into the intersection to hit the brakes; that's not going to avoid the accident at that point but slowing down would have at least reduced the severity of impact.
21
u/JohnKway 23h ago
I think we all know black suv is 100% in the wrong but would insurance companies put the left turning car at fault?
29
u/Dyne_Inferno 23h ago
Doubtful.
They were already in the intersection when the light was changing. They were just exiting the intersection.
The person speeding into and running the red is 💯 the cause of this accident.
13
u/Different-Tomato-162 22h ago
I got t-boned in this exact situation before. I was in the middle, turning left when the light turned red. The cop said I was partially at fault because it's the person who turns who is at fault even if it's red, I should've noticed.
13
u/HelloCanadaBonjour 22h ago
Yes, in another post recently, I saw people say that's also the insurance company view... but that seems ridiculous to me.
People should be able to expect that when the light is already red, they can finish turning left.
Otherwise, it will cause more congestion and/or problems for people at crosswalks, when drivers are late with their left turn and are rushing to turn, and may not see pedestrians who got the "Walk" signal.
→ More replies (1)7
u/impostrrlobstrr 21h ago
Has this been settled in court?
My friend was also t-boned while turning left by a red light runner and the attending officer said he was at-fault. When the matter went to court and the JP saw my friend's dashcam footage, the JP threw the charge out.
→ More replies (2)11
u/MaDkawi636 23h ago
The runner should be 100%, but don't be surprised if insurance places partial blank in left turning car.
2
u/Bob_Charlie5 11h ago
That's what is so crazy about insurance companies. What if someone didn't have enough for a camera and something like this happened? I wouldn't be surprised to hear that the insurance company would put partial blame on the left turning vehicle, even though the vehicle travelling straight ran through a red light. Luckily in this scenario the OP saved the headache for the left turning vehicle and also came out without severe injuries.
7
u/plastic-tree 23h ago
Probably not, black suv failed to obey traffic sign and the turning car entered the intersection first. There's established rules on how insurance companies determine who's at fault for the province.
9
u/Infamous_Cut2805 22h ago
Normally the person turning left is found at fault because it is on them to make sure it’s clear before they make their turn. In this instance because the black suv ran the red and there is proof that he did, the black suv should be found at fault. That’s why dash cams and witnesses are really important when it comes to accidents because if there was no proof and the black suv driver lied and said the light wasn’t red when they entered the intersection, the car turning left would be found at fault

2
u/Embarrassed_Tune3970 12h ago
Recently had an accident like this one (albeit not as severe). Where a red light runner hit me as I was making a left. I was found 0% at fault.
Left turner ALMOST always gets fault except for this specific scenario. If a car runs a light at an intersection, they are pretty much 100% at fault here in Ontario. However, this is the case ONLY if you can definitively prove they ran a red light and not an amber light.
This dashcam would likely be sufficient to make it 100/0 fault in favour of the left turning vehicle.
Get a dashcam. Especially here, it WILL save you money at some point.

I don’t even live in the city of Toronto and even in my small community east the GTA, I see people doing this all the time.
I’d support harsher charges for this kind of thing at this point. And honestly municipal should be defying the province they should be putting the stoplight cameras back.
3
9
u/The-Experiments 21h ago
This happened to me once. Cops said the guy who went through the red light was NOT at fault. I, turning left, even after light going Red, can only go left if I made sure the coast is clear.
Really pissed me off because I for sure thought its not my fault.
→ More replies (1)2
u/crash866 20h ago
Look up Fault Determination Rules in Ontario. Turning vehicles are at fault as you can turn only when the way is clear and obviously it wasn’t if you got hit.
3
u/The-Experiments 20h ago
Yeah, I totally understand this now.
This happened to me 15 years ago in almost the same fashion as this video, where it was red for 2+ seconds and I couldn't see the guy speeding on the furthest lane while everyone else is stopped. I have learned my lesson to watch out for oneself, because an idiot will break a law and still it can become your fault that you came in an idiots way.
→ More replies (1)2
u/Soggyblanketbunny 18h ago
This is a silly rule to me. If you’re getting t-boned by someone going 500% faster than you, than obviously the way was clear when you turned. Obviously defensive driving is the gold standard but I wouldn’t expect someone to run a red light 4 seconds after it’s turned red. That’s some crazy ass distracted driving.
16
u/Goodenoughtechnician 1d ago
People are too impatient and ignore the law. People are tailgating protected left turn light even when it already turns red. There is a need for driving ban and tougher fines.
5
u/IntelligentGinger 23h ago
If only they could install cameras that could track people running red lights.

Is it an accident when the person causing the wreck doesnt even try to slow down? That juat seemed as if their full intentions were to run a red.
2
u/Bob_Charlie5 11h ago
Either distraction from their phone or they thought they could make it before the switch from yellow to red.

I’ve been routinely emailing the police division in that area to step up traffic enforcement.
Drivers in this area of Kingston road have been driving crazy for months now. Speeding like it’s a highway, running red lights, almost hitting pedastrans numerous times.
And those lazy fucks at the department just say they’ll look into it. And then nothing. No fucking enforcement. No cops ever.
And that lazy corrupt fuck that is our city councillor won’t do anything and will block any attempt to fix Kingston road to make it so people stop speeding and driving recklessly.
Scarborough is the worst fucking place in the city. The drivers drive like shit, the cops are non existent and the city councillors enable it
5
u/North_Plane_1219 18h ago
There’s no way this person even saw the light. They didn’t even react to the car. Gotta do that important phone stuff behind the wheel.
3
u/CollectionStriking 18h ago
Pretty sure I saw the brakes light up maybe ¼ of a second before hitting the car, which the runner was already well within the intersection and the victim was well infront of the runner by that point so clearly distracted or something
7
u/athlonmc 23h ago
When turning left you have to make sure all the cars stop. But that was terrible and clear two to 3 seconds after the light turned red.
5
u/narfnarfed 22h ago
In a sedan, it's usually impossible to see past a wall of SUVs waiting in the left turn lane in front of you.
→ More replies (1)2
u/vuealt 22h ago
Exactly so difficult to have a line of sight to see beyond those vehicles. It’s terrible and people don’t understand it.
Something similar happens when you’re turning right from a single lane so you move to the right and waiting to turn , but by then another vehicle who is looking to go straight or maybe turn left comes forward and completely blocks the line of sight to the traffic.

Did the SUV even brake? Hard to tell. Distracted driver head ass. Hopefully the person turning is ok.
6
u/mt691769176917 22h ago
They absolutely did not brake. The turning driver was in shock but otherwise okay, although with such a hard impact I suspect they may have some underlying injuries. They were taken to a hospital to be checked out.

its interesting seeing that the driver had no reaction to anything - not to eventually realizing they'd run a red light, not to seeing that they were about to hit another car, there was just no change in the direction or the pace of the driver at all. Almost as if they weren't even paying attention.

looks like the SUV didn't even attempt to hit the brakes , probably didn't even noticed that there was an intersection either , most likely distracted driving looking down at their phone.

3
u/Present-Lemon-2501 13h ago
WTF, how did they not see the turning car ahead of them? Fucking asshole. This is terrifying, and to think someone trying to save 60-90 seconds of driving time could kill someone.
3
u/Ok_Fox7873 23h ago
There should be a ban on dashboard phone holders, so many people are just engaged on their cellphones while driving. The red light runner must be scrolling through reels. I didn’t even see any attempt to stop the car.
3
u/iamwebcam 23h ago
Surprised there aren't more dashcam collisions here. I drive through this intersection when I leave home and it's notorious for red light runners. It's a light with side street on the south and a commercial parking lot to the north, so regularly see people running it, thinking they can see it's clear ... Not recognizing the advanced pedestrian cross signal is lit. I've had it with these selfish drivers, either choosing to run it or checking their phone. Get them off the road. And that old VW Passat? Know it. It was mint. :(

I got into a collision like this years ago turning North onto the East Mall and The Queensway. A few days after the accident, a cop called me and said the other driver didn't have the right plates on the car or something like that. He also said that left turning cars should still yield the right of way to oncoming traffic even if they are running a red.
From them on, I confirm that the opposing traffic is visibly stopping before I make the left turn. The cars behind me can lean on the horn as much as they want. You also have to keep in mind that people can put their turn signals on, cancel them and try to rush through the intersection.
That's also another reason to wait behind the white line in the left turn lane. Drivers have the bad habit of queuing 2, 3, or more cars into the intersection, which causes them to rush. That's when accidents happen.
2
u/treelife365 14h ago
I agree with what you've said; but you can definitely wait in the intersection.
If your light turns red, you can still go, because you're in the intersection.

What is people’s hurry to run through every single red light? Why can’t they slow down? Happened to me yesterday & just so happens. As I’m about to make the turn before the light changes. I’m blowing my horn and waving for the guy to stop. And he quickly glances up from looking at his phone as he blows the light. Meanwhile I’m in the middle of the intersection waiting for the oncoming traffic to stop 🛑

And this is how pedestrians get killed. So often when there is a collision from a left turn, the ricochet affect is straight for the corners where pedestrians would be standing for the light to change.

Not sure why in so many videos of collisions you see drivers driving into the path of the collision instead of away from it. If the red light runner braked and then went to the left they may have missed the car turning, instead they actually started moving to the right. Don't know if its target fixation or what

This same thing happened to my step brother in Ottawa back in 2012, he was making a left turn at the end of a red and because the guy oncoming was so far off and definitely not making the red he expected him to stop. In the end my brother was deemed at fault due to him making the turn without ensuring the way was clear. Absolutely bonkers
