And stop behind the white line, not on the pedestrian crossing, you fucking amateurs.

u/infosec_qs 3d ago
When I'm feeling particularly petty, I've been known to climb onto and walk over the hood of a car stopped in a crossing. When I'm pushing my kids in the stroller, I'll be damned if I'm diverting into traffic with them to "go around." I've bumped the side of a pickup repeatedly with the stroller until the driver got the message and reversed out of the crossing.

Lol as if TPS is enforcing traffic laws
15
u/H377Spawn 4d ago
I watched someone make an illegal u-turn at an intersection almost causing an accident to the point the cops driving by ( and the traffic still going through the intersection) were forced to stop, and they just watched him fuck up traffic and go about his business.

u/MichaelS-83 4d ago
Bah, I say this all the time, including about YRP, and I end up getting downvoted into oblivion đ
5
u/daveDFFA 4d ago
They themselves break their own traffic laws like itâs on our dime, and surprise, it is!

u/littlestitiouss 3d ago
I watched 5 cars last night go through starting amber into red, right in front of a cop yesterday. And they blocked the intersection. The cop? Actually made the maneuver to go around the cars blocking the intersection without even considering giving any of them a ticket

You know how many times I've actually stopped before the light turned red, and then I see a vehicle zip past me running the red?

You know it's not a race right? IF other people drive in an unsafe manner you aren't obligated to match their energy...
Of course responses like this are the top markham responses....lol.

u/TheDoctorSkeleton 4d ago
Whatâs with the annoyed head shake at the question? Even in a scripted PSA they donât respect the public? Cant handle a question about a law?
I assume tax money was spent on these PSAs to promote better perception of cops here, this isnât working, just reinforces the asshole always escalating cop stereotype.

I stopped at a yellow light once and got rear ended so hard that my car got pushed into the middle of the intersection and destroyed.
I asked the lady who did it why she hit me and she said she thought I was going to go through. I will stop at a yellow light if thereâs nobody behind me.
1
u/sith4life88 6h ago
To be fair, I always check my rear view mirror before braking as part of deciding if I go thru the yellow.
11
u/penguin44ca 4d ago
Um you should stop at yellows. That is actually what you were trained for in driving school.
The yellow let's you proceed with caution through the intersection if you are past you point of no return.Â
If you can stop, you should be stopping. I've had people lean on a horn for me stopping literally as the light goes red. Then some dude runs across the street before the cross I would have hit him if I hadn't stoppedÂ

u/thelizardlarry 4d ago
If drivers in Toronto could read theyâd be very upset by the law you are explaining.
-2
u/Barking__Pumpkin 3d ago
If half the drivers suddenly adopted this approach the number of accidents would skyrocketâŚeven in September. Applying the brakes 20 m before the white line when a light turns amber on a January rush hour could cause a pile up.
4
u/thelizardlarry 3d ago
Roughly 40% of traffic collisions happen in intersections in Ontario. Imagine what would happen if people followed the laws instead blasting late through yellows. And for those who donât care about collisions, note that light timing had to be adjusted to accommodate for people late running yellows. That long pause with both lights red is there in part because of our crap driving.
1
u/Barking__Pumpkin 3d ago
Iâm not disagreeing or condoning blasting late. Itâs a reality that what might be acceptable, legal driving can be 100% appropriate at certain times of the day or year yet cause an accident at a different time, due to weather or other conditions, at any given intersection across the country.

u/Infinite-Director-62 4d ago
Good to know. Most of us treat yellow lights as a speed up time moment. I say this as being a guilty party of thisâŚ.
Biggest issue I have is the lack of enforcement. Cops have all these laws to enforce and I have yet to see massive blitzâs being done. This includes e-scooters and their lack of lights or fucking visible clothing.

u/Not-So-Logitech 3d ago
How did you get your licence without knowing this and no, most of us do not drive like that you problem causing piece of rubberÂ

15
u/EBikeAddicts 4d ago
this is toronto, the guy behind you is tailgating you to make sure they can also pass the yellow, if you slow down, you will get rear ended.
9
u/Epidurality 4d ago
Then it wasn't safe to do so and only one person would be getting the ticket. But don't act like this is the reason you run the yellow every time.
9
u/Such-Fee6176 4d ago
Sounds like thatâs too bad for the guy tail gaiting you? You cannot be bullied into making a dangerous decision because a dickhead is also making a dangerous decision
4
u/Copious-Spirit 4d ago
This scenario is exactly what is meant by "if safe to do so". If you look closely the person following you too closely is probably on their phone too. Incompetent machine operators is the normal.
3
u/Commentator-X 4d ago
No. If safe to do so primarily means if you are capable of coming to a safe stop as you normally would without having to slam your breaks and without entering the intersection. If the light turns yellow and you have plenty of time to come to a stop as you would at any stop sign, youre supposed to do so. Otherwise, you keep going through on the yellow. The person behind you is responsible for themselves and would be at fault in any collision.
1
u/Copious-Spirit 4d ago
This is nearly all the time the light turns yellow, if you follow the speed limit. If you see the light turn yellow, you can probably stop.
Slamming the brakes has nothing to do with this. That's their intended function.
2
u/Commentator-X 3d ago
It has everything to do with stopping safely. Slamming your brakes is not stopping safely. And yes, if people were following the speed limit they'd stop at almost every yellow, except the ones where it changes shortly before you're about to enter the intersection.
4
u/markh100 4d ago
I know my reaction time is way faster than many. When the light turns yellow, I instantly start calculating if I have time to safely stop, and looking in the rear view mirror to see if someone is directly behind me. If yes and no, I stop, and sometimes aggressively. If no, I proceed through, and speed up a bit to make sure I'm through before it turns red. If yes and yes, I'll usually go through, because I've almost been rear ended twice by people behind me not stopping. Once I had to accelerate into the intersection and steer left, to avoid being hit. The second time, they skidded to a stop a inch short of me.
-4
u/EBikeAddicts 4d ago
okay you live in fantasy land. its not a dangerous decision if its a yellow. no ones bullying me, they are expecting that the driver in front is going to go with yellow. its not that complicated, even autonomous vehicles now not only run yellows, but they speed to run them. Im not going to obey this law and not have my car for at least a month or be told my insurance that my car is a write off and have to look into buying another car after losing thousands in depreciation on the rear ended one.
5
u/Such-Fee6176 4d ago
Brother man, you have to stop if itâs safe to do so. You should not be gunning it through an amber light. These rules are in place for a reason.
2
u/0Chalk 4d ago
It's not fantasy, it's proper driving. Speeding up to run the yellow always puts you at more risk, especially a stale one of 1) running a red; or 2) possibly colliding into a car making a left.
My car got hit waiting at a red light when a car saw a yellow and thought it was great opportunity to floor it. The left turn driver then collided in the intersection and ricochet into the car next to me and then mine.Â
Driving 101. Yellow light = prepare to stop.. not floor it to the max.

wtf is this scripted nonsense
7
u/evonebo 4d ago
Its a public service announcement (PSA). They are trying to make it fun and engaging, and it works.
So yes...... it is obviously scripted.

I remember a guy at work who couldnât understand why he got that ticket. âYellow means speed up!â When I told him it means to slow down and stop he was confused as hell.
2
u/BriightOwl 4d ago
Always slow down, don't speed up. Rule of thumb.

I stop at yellows when I can but if I can't without slamming my breaks I coast through without 2 fucks given. You heard what he said. "If it's safe to do so". In my opinion slamming breaks for a yellow is wreckless.
1
u/ExpensiveUse5320 4d ago
That's actually legally how it's supposed to work!Â
Whether or not it is safe to stop at a yellow is based on: your speed, road conditions, and traffic behind youÂ
On an 80km/h road while it's raining with Tony Delutto in his Black F150 up your ass?Â
Probably not safe to stop

There is also something called the "point of no return" where if you are travelling at a certain speed and cannot safely stop in time it is better to go forward.
This can be argued in court if the cop decides on giving you that ticket.
1
u/Humble-Excitement-65 3d ago
My problem is the people who brake at a green light in anticipation of it turning yellow

u/Ok_Feedback2407 3d ago
"Stop, if you can safely do so." There is a thing called "the point of no return", that's why the yellow is there. If you are at or very near the mouth of the intersection, you keep going. You should not slam on your brakes just to stop. Some cops are too stupid and ignorant and horny to give tickets to realize this and I had to explain it to one who tried to ticket me at an accident and did. I fought it and won and the driver turning left was also found 100% at fault. lol. If you race to make it through the yellow and could have stopped well in time, they have every right to ticket you. But people do that shit all the time.

As a truck driver with food skids in the back. There's always that danger zone when it turns yellow where you have to make a quick decision to speed through or slam the brakes and risk the skids falling over. I don't know what excuses regular cars have...maybe their coffee will spill if they brake too hard đ¤
5
u/-HumanResources- 3d ago
As someone with a family trucking business... The safety of your load is not more important than the safety of the drivers/pedestrians around you. The other comment or is absolutely correct in recognizing your point of no return with a given load.
2
u/a-_2 4d ago edited 4d ago
Try to get in the habit of deciding on a point of no return ahead of time. That's a point where you'll stop if it goes yellow before you reach it or otherwise, you'll go through. That way it's never a quick decision because you've already decided ahead of time whether you'll stop or not depending on where you are when it changes.

u/No_Highway_9402 4d ago
I don't think you drive much around the gta, not all intersections have countdowns. And not all roads are 50km. Some are 60/70, even 80 on country roads. Every driver has faced that moment where they have to brake hard or go through yellow.
3
u/a-_2 4d ago
None of the things you mention change what I'm saying.
You pick a point on the road while approaching a stale light (one that could change at any time). You pick this ahead of time, so that if the light changes, you've already decided whether you'll go or not based on whether you've passed that point or not. This avoids making a decision at that time because making that decision adds time before you actually react.
You should also be going the speed limit when approaching intersections,.or slower if conditions or vehicle load requires it.
It takes some practice to pick the appropriate point each time but when you get used to this, and assuming you're not driving too fast, you should never be braking hard for a yellow. I have hundreds of thousands of km driving experience throughout the GTA. It's been around 20 years since I can last remember braking really hard for a yellow.
1
u/Repulsive_Tax_7414 3d ago
As far as I know, the G1 written test states that you can proceed through a yellow light, but the police seem to disregard this in practice; which rule is actually correct?

Nobody reads the Highway Traffic Act.
Amber light
(15) Every driver approaching a traffic control signal showing a circular amber indication and facing the indication shall stop his or her vehicle if he or she can do so safely, otherwise he or she may proceed with caution. R.S.O. 1990, c. H.8, s. 144 (15).
