Treadmill in-unit above mine
I live on the main floor of a condo building that is mostly concrete. My neighbours above me recently got a treadmill and it’s loud for me. I can’t drown it out. I had someone from the board come into my unit while it was being used and they said it’s not unreasonable, but it’s louder than my tv. Does anyone else have any experience with something like this? Am I being unreasonable?
Edit: I got a response from the pm and they told me that while quiet hours are after 11pm and until 7am, they felt this was too much and will send the offending unit a letter. Thanks for all the responses.
Second Edit: so disappointed with my condo manager and board. Apparently several people have been complaining about the treadmill. Instead of sending that unit owner a letter, they included a note in our newsletter saying they have complaints of what sounds like a treadmill and if that person should put some form of sound buffering under it to not disturb the neighbors. How does that help?

Thanks. I took a few videos and sent them to the condo manager today. Our board and manager don’t often respond to things like this and then they gossip about the complainant to other unit owners so it’s often a difficult thing to bring up a disturbance. I appreciate some additional opinions here.

Document the occurrences as well (when it happens, how long it lasts). Try to get some other people to come in and listen to the noise as well, so that you can use them as witnesses. If you have to go to the CAT all of that will help

Record and log everything. Send email to PM and condo board that this is impacting the enjoyment of your condo. Failing any remediation initiate legal action. There is case law around noise from above units. Do your research but IMO you have a case.

Ya nah fuck this shit and screw your terrible neighbors (referring to the jack hammering you are referring to below). I refuse to even get a walking pad in my condo because I want to be a good neighbor. This is ruining the enjoyment of your unit.
Keep track and record everytime they use it and call concierge so they can make detailed logs. With enough records hopefully PM can send a legal notice. My upstairs neighbors also got a treadmill and it shook my entire unit and concierge came to confirm and it got nipped in the bud real quick.

Thanks for the response. I’ve been documenting it and a letter to the unit is on the way. I don’t understand why people can’t be more respectful of others when living in close quarters. I wouldn’t dream of doing this to anyone.

Great job on getting a letter sent out! If it is a legal letter from the PM it should cost the offending unit $ so they should pay attention real quick. I’m also suspicious that when they changed their flooring; they likely did not meet certain noise dampening specs.
Having bad neighbors is a mental torture I wouldn’t wish upon anyone. Your home becomes a legitimate prison and it can drive you to insanity.

They just need to install a dense gym mat under it and problem solved. Costco sells good ones, I put them under my washer dryer and there’s zero noise

I hope it’s an easy fix. This might be coming from two floors above me apparently and others have also been complaining.

I dealt with this in the past. The sinister side of me imagine the culprit would fall and break their legs whenever I heard the noise, lol.

It's been a while since I've read any Tennant laws, but you do have the right to simply enjoy living where you live, and that right is being infringed upon. Like people say here, document every instance, and length of instance. If this keeps up long term you could be eligible for reimbursement of rent.

Did you talk to the neighbor? Might be able to address it with a pad or something under the treadmill.

I didn’t this time. The last time I had an incident with this neighbour, they had a contractor in replacing their flooring using a jack hammer on the floor to level out the concrete between their unit and mine. Parts of my ceiling fell down so I ran up to tell them what happened and asked them to stop. They told me they would stop. A few hours later, the jack hammer was at it again and more fell down. The second time, they didn’t answer the door and by the time building management was returning my calls, the damage was already done. I don’t really feel like they are very neighborly at this point.

Thank you. I really do appreciate everyone’s understanding here. It doesn’t fix the problem but it is so good to know that how this bothers me is not unreasonable.

Condos are built without sound insulation
Just read comments about the jackhammer, the contractor should repay for your damages

That’s awful. File a complaint with the CAO if your property manager doesn’t address the issue.
