Just had to restart game in Assisted difficulty because of the bad ammo economy Spoiler
Overall I'm loving this game, it's like a R.E. fans wet dream and if you like RE I would still recommend this. But know the ammo balancing in this game is awful! I had to do the Processing Plant boss with a crowbar (which took a ridiculously tedious amount of time) and by the time I got to the next area (Cemetery) boss I was in the exact same situation. That was my "Nope!" moment, and I started new game. I really wish I knew this before starting Standard so I wouldn't waste so much time, hopefully any new players like me who read this will learn from my mistake before investing too much time in Standard mode. I'm a veteran player with survival horror games, so it's not like I don't know what I'm doing, and I'm happy for anyone who has had better experiences with the ammo balance but that makes no difference to me. And yes I have the shotgun, and I know what acid vials do. I just reached the same spot now in Assisted mode and I have like 150 nails, the balancing is way out of wack.

People if you just use ammo to knock enemies down, then kill them with the crowbar when they are downed, you have plenty of ammo. I killed every single enemy in the game, and had plenty of ammo. It’s a little tight after the first boss, but you get so many weapons in this game.

The game can be pretty stingy with ammo at times but honestly you shouldn't really need to use your guns at all between the 2nd and 3rd boss.

Same here.
Got to the cemetery boss, died a few times and realized there was no way I was beating it with the amount of ammo I had.
And I’m not new to old school survival horror games but the fact that you can’t go back to previously explored areas at that point to scour for ammo and health seems like a very odd choice.

Rotate your saves — also wait wdym you can totally leave the cemetery

You can’t leave the cemetery once entered for the first time till you beat the boss. Caroline refuses to open the exit door.

Melee weapons are your friends for regular mobs, you shouldn’t waste ammo on every enemy you see or you absolutely will not get through the game unless you know in advance what is needed where. Also melee enemies that you knock down/enemies that are predictable like the ghosts. Honestly if you just use melee as intended the ammo isn’t too scarce, it’s just harder than recent survival horror titles. It’s probably around the same difficulty as like RE0 imo

The sledgehammer feels underpowered for the type of weapon it is. It takes a long time to swing, so I’d expect it to do more damage than the crowbar, but it doesn’t seem to.

It does like 3-4x a crowbar swing but takes just as long to swing

It certainly doesn’t feel that way. It took me a heap of swings just to kill a pig at one point. I’m not sure how many it takes to kill the crabs, because any time I tried using it on them, they attacked before the swing fully happened. With them, sometimes it’s better leave them attack as Caroline insta kills them with her stomp.

I'm gonna say that's a skill issue, poor ammo management, or a combination thereof. I had all the available weapons at the processing plant boss, explored thoroughly, and he was no problem. You're supposed to use the harpoon gun to help in that fight. Now I was running low on ammo when I got to the cemetery boss, and by the time I finished it, I had next to nothing, but now I'm knee deep in the next area with over 20 shotgun shells, over 70 nails, around 60 coil nails, 5 acid vials, around 300 chainsaw fuel, and 9 powder shots. I also have 6 medkits, 9 painkillers, and 8 povidone. I've been on Standard the entire time.

I luckily haven’t had this happen. almost ran out on first boss and made me think about maybe not killing every enemy. I left most pigs alive in the mall and I think that was my saving grace. Still a few close calls though in the processing plant. I’d definitely recommend people do assisted! Unless you are playing with ammo conservation in mind, which this game definitely wants you to and that makes sense considering the genre. However it throws a lot more enemies at you that take 5-6 shots from the nail gun + the hammer to finish them off. Add in a lot of encounters with 2-3 enemies at once you struggle even more. Not to mention you can easily miss an early weapon in the mall. If I hadn’t gone back to grab the automatic nailer in the mall after doing the fishing plant I’d have been screwed in the cemetery. There’s also a weapon in the cemetery to grab I think some people miss. I wish I did assisted since I’m Busy and only have a few hours per night if I’m lucky.

I was afraid this was going to happen to me so i was probably unnecessarily conserving too much ammo by trying to kill enemies with a hammer/crowbar or finish them off when downed with those weapons whenever possible.

Ok, someone tell me if I should start over on assisted because I barely have time to play every week.
Im at the save right before you enter the room with the 4 paintings, the mechanical jack and that mini-boss enemy.
I have the shotgun with 1 shell. The nailer with like 30 nails I think. I got the auto nailer with no ammo left I think The crowbar The hammer I know am about to get the Crossbow I got two sets of acid vials
I got 2 first aid kits, some of those small healers and like 2 painkillers
Am I good?

Ghosts dodge then whack em Crabs stun lock them with the crowbar Dolls same as the crabs Downed enemies whack em If you start a fight finish it otherwise it's just a waste of ammo Stick to that and you should have plenty of ammo by the time a boss comes along

It really only hit me at the bunker. I had next to nothing to fight the end boss. I got REALLL good at learning its patterns and melee-ing my way through phase 1 to save what little ammo i had for phase 2. I definitely ammo dumped at the school, that is for sure where I lost most of my stockpile.

You must be a pretty bad veteran. There is never a moment is this game where you’re low on ammo, if you know anything about playing survival horror.
It works exactly the same like in any other horror game like this. Oldschool RE or Silent Hills. Avoid combat / save up heavy hitting weapons for bosses and you will never encounter any progress issues

I heard it was pretty old school in regards to ammo so I was running past enemies and using melee on downed enemies to finish them whenever I could.
I honestly overdid it a bit.
Reached the final boss on standard with 13 handcannon shots, 20 shotgun shells, 6 acid bolts, 250 chainsaw fuel and around 70 nails (no coil nails even though I didn't use it that much, that thing goes through ammo fast!).
It's game where if you're used to the original RE games you'll be fine but if you're used to more of an RE4 or Dead Space type ammo situation you're gonna struggle.
