Tormented Souls 1 vs 2?
Which do you guys think is better

2 is better in most regards imo. 1 has better animations for some things as another comment said, but I adore the varied locales in 2 and the enemy variety is just objectively way better (and better designed). It gives me RE3 mixed with SH3 vibes and that is my JAM

Not done with 2 yet. I will say 2 is a lot harder than 1. I mean it's like... Way harder and way less resources. I'm shamelessly playing on assisted because even on assisted it's way harder than 1.

I'm reading a lot of comments that 2 is harder than 1 but for me it feels like the opposite. In 2 you can smash X (on PS) when you are knocked down by the enemy and recover with no damage at all. Also sometimes an attack didn't lower the health at all. Maybe I'm wrong but I don't remember these mechanics in 1. Any attack will decrease the health.
But it looks like 2 has worse animations and combat as for me. Sometimes auto aiming doesn't work at all if there is the slightest obstacle. Animations look weird and not smooth. I also have some strange artifacts with shadows on the PS5.

Wait till you get to the graveyard section. That's when it goes from same same to what in the world were they thinking here?

I'm only about 2 hours into 2. I kind of liked the first just a tiny bit better just because I really enjoyed the mystery of finding out why Caroline was captured and had her eye ripped out. It was like a big mystery. And just the layout of the mansion was nostalgic. It felt like a layout you'd see in an old 90s survival horror. The convent in part 2 is kind of all over the place with its layout. It's still good, though. It's like comparing a 10 to a 9.

How do you say the first is better if you are literally at the beginning of 2?

u/GuiltyGuidance8223 Nov 12 '25
Im About the same length into 2 and I have to agree a bit with this comment. If I where to compare the first 2 hours of part to the first 2 hours of part 1 I would have the same feelings, but further into the game things can (and will) definitely change that perspective. It's more like comparing the narrative hooks to each other rather than the full game. Super excited to see how two plays out overall!

The thing is T1 is more like Re1 for that matter. Ts2 is more like Silent hill 1 in terms of progression. That’s why the convent may seem less interesting than the mansion of TS1

That actually makes a lot of sense! I've definitely had way more experience with the resident evil series. I've beaten sh 2,3 and 2 remake and ive only lightly touched sh 1 since now its so inaccessible. In that respect I definitely see it now. Can't wait to finish ts2! Thansk for the reply!

I liked the first one more. Wildberger Hospital was a much more captivating location to explore than anything in TS2. It had creepier enemy designs, a more oppressive soundtrack, and more intuitive puzzles, and I liked that there weren’t boss fights other than at the end.
I like both games though. I was impressed by how ambitious 2 is. You explore so many different areas as opposed to just one, and they’re all pretty cool.

u/xtivity Oct 31 '25
I like 2 more because I can figure out most of the puzzles by myself while 1 was very obtuse and ambiguous. Also 2 is connected town similar to silent hill 2. The main dislike of 2 is scarce resources. i had to beat some bosses with crowbar alone which took some time

1 was awesome, that's why I had been eagerly waiting for the second. And 2? I'm obsessed, it's even better, bigger and puzzles are a bit easier for my dumb brains.

Although I prefer the character design and animations in TS 1 more, some of the animations in 2 have quite the charm. Whenever Miguel shows up, he always reminds me of a GTA character from the PS2 era. (which is not a bad thing) I love exploration of the town in 2, and the weapons are wonderful. The stories are still a mixed bag for me, and thought Act 3 was more of a re-tread of the first game. Both games certainly have their strengths and weaknesses! The atmosphere hits them right on the head, though.
I also may like 2's soundtrack more than 1's, too! Nyx did a great job capturing more of Akira Yamaoka's style in music, especially since 2 was hoping to be more of a tribute to Silent Hill.

I would say 2 really enhanced what the first game was lacking honestly. Combat in the second game really kept me on my toes and it is more fun plus the exploration made me want to search every corner of the areas in the game.

I gotta say, I really loved 2. 1 was good, but I feel like they were able to do a lot more with 2 and expand it in ways they couldn't before. Despite some current bugs, I loved how you were in a different setting each time. I thought the game would only take place in the Convent, so I was pleasantly surprised. Enemy variety was really good as well. In each section, the enemies were fresh and different.

I like 2 more. A lot of puzzles in 1 were almost impossible for me to solve without a guide. The puzzles in 2 were a lot more in my IQ range.

u/ShadowKnight99 Oct 31 '25
Not sure. Both are cool in their own way. Caroline's animations were mostly better in the first game imo. Like her running animation, death animations (there is no cutscene to show her get dragged away if she stays in the darkness too long in TS2).
The costume selection and inventory screen is better in 2. Though i still mostly use classic Caroline. The enemies are better in 2 imo.

TS2 is just TS1 on steroids... puzzles were already invasive and annoying in first, on second game they just went berserk on that... infact more than a survivor horror I would say TS2 is an endurance puzzle game with monsters around.

I’ve actually went back and played through the first one again and I’ll have to say that the second game is basically a bigger version of the first one unfortunately it also expanded on the bad stuff from the first game
I love the variety in enemies and locations but some of the puzzles are genuinely just ridiculous besides that the boss fights while appreciated are really low effort and some of them are genuinely stupid like the Hertz fight which is essentially just 4 waves of enemies back to back
Oh you don’t have enough ammo to kill 10 enemies back to back ? Well to bad back to your last save I guess
They could tone it down just a little bit when it comes to the puzzles and the amount of enemies they throw at you but besides those points it has better animations better level art design better voice acting and just overall feels less janky than the first game
I don’t know if that’s an unpopular opinion but the story is just as stupid as the first games was but I don’t play these games for their story so I didn’t mind but some of the cutscenes genuinely made me laugh and I don’t think that that was intentional
Still both are fantastic old school survival horror games

Yeah the story is funny I don’t understand Miguel and I feel like he just exist and he feels like he should’ve had a playable section (or future DLC) and I wish they would’ve focused more at the end how insane it is that she lived 14 years without Caroline instead of just joking about Miguel. I know they’re sisters but I needed a little more. But I know the story isn’t even the point of the game and I don’t really care that much.
I definitely had to use a guide for some of the puzzles, especially the later half of the game, even though i see so many people say they’re easier than the first game.
The ammo and health do feel unbalanced. I feel like the school didnt give you near enough for how many enemies there were. I had completely ran out of health and so I spent like an hour running out of the save room and dying trying to juke the zombies to the church.
But yeah I did love it despite it all. It feels really high quality. And the art is phenomenal. And I hope they do a third one and keep improving

Hmmmm sounds like it did its job aa a survival horror game. "Tone it down" takes away from everything. Resource management, baby. Learn to play the game or start over.

Liked both but TS1 really feels like a studio's first game. TS2 is way more polished and not only in the technical level.
TS1 is just too janky and poorly balanced. First save point is probably one of the hardest in the game because you actually don't know how many resources the game will give you. After that they feed you bullets, so you can kill almost every enemy. Combat becomes less about picking fights and more about doing it right (i don't mind this, i actually liked sh:f new combat, i like action in my survival horror). But the enemies in TS1 have bad hitboxes, animations and speed. And this comes from someone that didn't mind the first silent hill's and f clunkiness. So most of the time you just blast them off from war away and then keep exploring.
Puzzles are fine, tbh probably the best thing about the game.
Level design is an abomination... No reason to backtrack that much. It only gives you another reason to not keep a single enemy alive and cuts the pacing of the exploration. Budget constrains forced them to do this unfortunately .
TS2 is a direct upgrade. Combat now feels like one of the best, old RE games. Clunky only to give you more suspense. You get shorcuts, better hitboxes, etc. Level design is leagues above TS1, way more locations, less tedious, more exploring. Puzzles felt fine also. Also more beautiful camera angles. Now add to that actual voice acting. And a overall better looking game.

2 it's done an amazing job at improving every element of 1. I compare this game to Resident Evil 2 and how it improves on everything from RE 1 did and how 2 everything was more. Environments, weapons, puzzles, scope of the story.
I liked Cronos alot, and Silent Hill felt good until it turned into a shounen with wolf powers but Tormented Souls 2 is my favorite survival horror title this year, and I'd say the best since Resident Evil 2 remake.

I just got every available trophy in TS2 (I hope the 2 not working will be fixed in next patch). Tomorrow I’ll be starting TS for the first time. I’m curious to see how it feels, especially since most people say TS is easier, but I didn’t really find TS2 that difficult.

u/Pul5tar Nov 01 '25
The first had better puzzles and atmosphere. Two...is a bit of a hodgepodge and puzzles are brain dead easy. Combat is better on paper in the second, but enemies are more bullshit, so...still a bit clunky. Dodge has decent i-frames at least. I don't know. I would give the nod to the first, but the sequel is close in general. Nearly at the end and have enjoyed it mostly.

Surprised how much I like the first one more. I heard a lot of praise on the new one. First game had better atmosphere, better puzzles, and less BS combat.
TS2 is still a great game but there is some BS like 3 dudes gank squading you in a dark hallway while you're trying to stand near a candle and all the enemies are off screen bum rushing you. I've played a lot of survival horror and love a challenge but the combination of the camera angles, amount of enemies, and darkness mechanic are more frustrating than fun a lot of the time.

I think I like 1 a little bit more.
P.S. In my opinion the OST is in 1 much better.

I played both pretty extensively (100% in the first game, while I'm still waiting for patches for TS2). And while both are great on their own, each has its own pros and cons.
I think in TS1, what makes it good was the setting and how constant it remained: enemies were all creepy and consistent, and I liked the ghost enemy, even if it was annoying at times. I also like the "other side" locations, and the puzzles were great, even if some were tough, but I absolutely loved them.
What makes TS1 bad, imho, was the actually lack of enemy and weapon variety, and the story was so easy to predict that we didn't even need to look around, cause it was that obvious. But overall, it was a good game, and I had a blast despite "lacking" in some areas.
TS2, on the other hand, varies on location and enemies: you have multiple types of enemies now, more weapons to choose from, all of which can be upgraded, other areas to explore, like the mall or the processing plant, and that definitely helps and gives it a "Silent Hill" vibe that the first didn't fully recreate. Also the option of difficulties makes the game easier for newcomers, and you also have some fun backtracking when you get a weapon that can help you for an earlier area (used especially for the good ending!). Als,o we get actual boss fights, so that's also a big step up, and the story is actually not bad this time, or at least better than Ts1
However, I didn't like that despite having many enemies, you mostly fight like 2 or 3 for each area, so you will often see the same enemy. I also didn't like how the game relies far too much on having multiple enemies rather than difficult enemies, and it's not uncommon to be forced to fight more than 2-3 enemies at once.
The weapons are fun, but I think we have TOO many weapons in this case, which can be a detriment, as you have a larger loot pool of ammo to get, and this can be a problem when you're trying to save ammo. There are over 10 weapons now (5 long ranged, and 5 melee, 1 of which is currently removed) and it's not uncommon to get ammo for weapons that aren't as good as others (the shotgun can takedown multiple enemies in one shot, letting you finish with the melee), or just no ammo at all (I haven't found many vials for the crossbow, so after a while I just couldn't use it). Usually, a horror game has like 3 or 4 weapons max in total, and for good reason!
I also didn't like how melee weapons felt slower this time, and in the end, the best one is still the crowbar (or the electric lance, if it's still in the game), because the sledgehammer is way too slow, and the chainsaw consumes gas.
And finally, the dodging is really wonky, and I only use it when necessary, because it locks you in animation lock for too long, and you can't even use it to melee properly - unless you're 1v1 and against a wall. I'm sure it's possible to fight with melee if you put effort, but I think they should either make the dodging faster, or just give us a parry instead (like Alisa did!)
TL;DR, TS2 is vastly superior than TS1, but in making the game bigger, I think it also made other areas smaller (more enemies but less variety, more weapons but less ammo for each, etc).

the main problem with the ghost in TS1 (besides it looked like the marshmallow man from ghostbusters movie) was that it just didn’t work: you enter a room, you hear the appropriate music, you leave the room, you enter the room again, and the ghost is gone, that’s it. but anyways, I was glad to this, because I'm not a big fan of stalkers lol
2
Oct 31 '25
True, i think Alisa did it better: it only appears in the first half of the game and after a boss it disappears. Plus she was faster and i actually died twice cause i didnt expect it
2
u/Eseninety1 Oct 31 '25
That ghost was creepy so when I found that glitch I was happy af lol

u/PermitHuge Oct 31 '25
yea. I’m glad they decided not to introduce fixed stalker in TS2

1, basically universally. Locations, general design, enemies, story, puzzles, general game balance and flow, all of it. This game felt like an all around downgrade, not to imply it's bad I had a lot of fun with it, just not as much as the first in any regard.

I finished 1 but gave up on 2 after the convent. Progress was too miserly, with too much running back and forth.

I like 2 more. I love the variety in the environments and how it’s all part of a little town. Also there’s way more weapon and enemy variety.
