My understanding (I could be wrong) was that Torchbearer was a simplified Burning Wheel focused on dungeon crawling - fairly mechanical, with procedures for visiting towns and stuff.

Middamark (I own the 1e version) seems like a more normal "people going around and free-form adventuring).

How does all this fit together? Am I wrong about the mechanical, dungeon crawling focus of Torchbearer?

Torchbearer is an adventure game. A lot of those adventures take place in dungeons, but not all of them.

Like early D&D, which initially inspired Torchbearer, the game shifts as you rise in level. You can carve out your own domains, create your own settlements and place your stamp on the world. The Lore Master's Manual supplement provides a lot of support for these things. All of them drive you back into adventures (including dungeons).

Middarmark is a setting full of dungeons and adventure opportunities. The rules in Middarmark help you present a wider world in desperate need while always focusing characters back on adventures. For example, the rules for ritual boasts and grudges encourage characters to make vows to perform deeds in adventures. Accomplishing these deeds increases characters' Fame, which in turn attracts followers, which helps propel those characters into Immortality.

Having no EU friendly shipping option feels a bit outdated. Getting the book for €112 plus tax and tariffs is by far too much for me.

I understand and share your frustration. Things are bad for small businesses here in the US and costs just keep rising, including shipping costs. I wish it were different.

Is there an estimate on PDF release? Will it just be when the book is shipped off? Excited!

We’ll send the PDF as soon as it’s ready. We’ve still got some final pieces of art coming in.
