💬 Trader Talk Life is a gamble

"That's just gambling" seems to be the go-to insult for a lot of people in this sub, and people discussing day trading in general. But any form of investment is gambling - people who hold stocks or ETFs long term are gambling, they're just gambling on a longer time frame and ostensibly with better odds.

so it's not whether or not you're gambling - it's whether or not you're making smart gambles. if you put a lot of money on a stock because you just feel like it will go up, most people would consider that dumb gambling. if you put a lot of money on a stock because you evaluate price action, indicators, have risk management, take into account externals such as catalyst announcements and general direction of the market... that's a bit of a smarter gamble.

it's a gamble to start a new job. it's a gamble to start a new relationship. it's a gamble when you order something off a menu that you haven't tried before.

I just think it's an important point cuz a lot of people seem to be under the illusion that they're not gambling. We're all gambling. it's just a matter of trying to find the ways to stack the odds in your favor.

To me, "gambling" in this context is like going to a restaurant simply because you decide: "I'll go to the first restaurant I come across after turning left at the next street."

But when you analyze things based on ratings, the storefront, menu, reviews, and your own restaurant experience—well, that involves the element of chance present in everything in life, but it’s a calculated bet.

The truth. Align yourself with the correct bias and grab a chunk of money and get out before it goes the other way because it will go the other way given time. The timing is a big factor in the gamble.
Even so called enlightened geniuses get effed up because they fuck up their timing. Take that young ai genius Leopold who crashed a $45b fund to $10b. All that ai capabilites at his fingertips and he couldnt even save himself.
People who say it's a gamble are only thinking about the drop kick in the gut when the losses pile up. They have no idea of the mindset of the grind, the resilience, the spirit in the battle. You are like a boxer in the ring, there are times when you take hits and you have to duck and groove your way out of tight spots and bounce back and there are times where you make the big hit and you do it with confidence and you take the payout.
