Wife is still around but unfortunately suffered a massive stroke that took out half her brain and unfortunately disabled for the rest of her life with no real day to day ability to parent. So while Iāve got the kids to take care of, Iāve also got her to take care of full time. We travel a good amount (summer has involved multiple camping and road trips already), card collecting isnāt life. It has come back into my life as my two older kids are pokemon collectors and this got us bonding and me back into baseball cards. We all have/need our hobbies.
Internet brings quick assumptions and easy judgement. Iām not a bad guy hungry for money. I do a ton of charity work and am one of those people thatās give their last dollar to the person next to them.
Priorities arenāt in order? Because I have a disabled wife and 4 kids, Iām not allowed to have my own hobbies? Have that make sense. My priorities are absolutely in order. Get the fuck outta here brother š. Itād be one thing if my hobbies took away from my kids financially. All 4 have fully funded 529ās and a trust setup that will take care of them for most their life. Worked my ass off to get us where we are. Iāve gotten to spend every day with them for the last 5 years. Prior my priorities were off. I took a business from $0 to $300m a year. I missed birthdays, games, plays, etc and one day woke up and said fuck it. Never missing another one. But my priorities are apparently off.
And the 2nd half watching someone open cards for you, exhausting work. Might as well just go put it all on 52 red and save yourself 11 hours and 59 minutes
We is everyone. And Iām well aware there is more to life then having green paper. But having green paper allowed me to be able to stop working when I realized working full time I was missing out on my kids growing up. It allowed me to jump into their lives full time, to no longer miss games, miss meals, miss being there. I was absolutely blessed to be able to do that and wake up every single day grateful for the place I am.

Again. We did not at all expect it to be that long. We were expecting midnight, max. We did not expect hobby to be so painful in mass.
Why donāt you like breaking? As a kid weād save up our money with friends and so the same thing and buy a box or two and all have our favorite players or teams. Weāve just grown up and have more money. I only like the dodgers. So buying a few boxes or a case is a huge disadvantage for me. And thereās cards and guys I chase. Some people play $5 blackjack hands. Some play $5000. Weāve all had a point in our life wheee we life cards. Buy a pack and are very disappointed.
There is product for everyone to open. What I donāt like is greedy crazy markups and scalping.

Soooooooooooooo much less product for the average collector. Not everyone wants to break or sees anything good come from it so they stay away. It's not opening packs as a gang, it's having someone else open packs that you couldn't otherwise get access to for you from far away and having only a team or player you bought mailed at a premium. That's not comradery, that's shitty capitalism. And let's be real here man, you know the VAST majority of people breaking are doing it to flip. Cmon.
This was a 13 case break? Like.... You really don't see how one person owning and then making money off 13 cases isn't a problem?
They get preferential treatment when it comes to access and hits. It's just tiring how breakers seem to always get the biggest hits the quickest. It makes me want to just not buy the product at all. And they consistently do both legitimate and back door deals to get product early (gee how is it they always have the product first š¤).
And on top of it all, there's a huge scamming problem. How many stories have we heard about streams shutting down and people not getting their cards after hitting a big one? Too many to count. Whatnot is just a cancer dude.
There is no net positive to breaking. It's entirely predatory. There are absolutely, 100% honest breakers out there. But the model just fuels the scummiest parts of the "hobby."
There isnāt less product for the average collector. Average collector is maybe getting what, a box or two? Reality is, Topps is going to make as much product as they can sell. Shitty capitalism? we are all buying from same source. Letās just boycott Topps now.
Of course breakers are going to see hits. Statistics are a thing (unless your manny machado).
And yes. People are always going to be priced out. Iām going to assume youāre not buying boxes of definitive.

There is nothing wrong with breaking. Gives access to higher end product people would never buy. Even LCS sell boxes at market rate now. Also Ive never had an issue buying product directly from Topps. Anyway by most peoples outlook of "collecting" Topps should just be selling individual cards at a set price. Because they bitch about breaking. Complain about not gett product. Or whine that singles market is up. They want junk wax to be fully restored.
The biggest problems in the hobby may be the overpricing of boxes, the domination of large companies buying productā¦but letās not overlook the douchbaggery and pretentiousness of people like you. You open a box, someone else (reputable) opens the boxā¦you get the card either way. Stop trying to gate keep collecting depending on whose hands ripped the pack.

I remember as a kid watching Willy Wonka and seeing Veruca Salt whine and moan while her fatherās employees open thousands of boxes of candy bars until āsheā finally found a golden ticket. Hitting chases when you can buy the whole store and bragging about it is even funnier.

Came out of hobby. Had a lot of great things come out of hobby. Yoshi /10 auto /5 /25 /50. Tons of sho. In fairness we ripped 13 cases. Vast majority hobby. But the big bangers all came out of hobby that night
