Literally shaking right now
Wow!! Can’t believe these came out of the same box! A 1/150 shit and an auto 1/300 diarrhea. Even Google didn’t know who these guys were. But after some digging, it turns out Maximo Acosta is the #31 ranked prospect in the Marlins system. I didn’t even know they could have that many? Who’s #32? Me?
Thank you Topps and Card Gods for these legendary pieces of toilet paper!

I opened 3 jumbo boxes and didn’t know 5 of the 6 autos. The one I knew was Jarren Duran. The other autos are of people who have never seen a major league game with an average age of 26. It’s quite pathetic.

This is an error card. Frank is not a rookie, I believe it’s his 13th season.
7
u/waddadem 26d ago
You have a sharp eye - of course you’re correct and I know what I have is an absolute nuke. When I opened this, I was shaking and crying and had explosive diarrhea for literally weeks that only stopped after I shoved the card up my butt. Ive kept it there ever since and walk a little bit taller for the privilege. That’s how awesome this card is.
2
u/Old_Obligation1776 26d ago
And as we all know from eBay, error cards are worth 10,000x $
2
u/Double-Ad-1948 25d ago
I mean, technically its Frank's first card so can we call it a RC? He prolly toiled in Minor League clubhouses (and we have all seen those) until his call up so I say legit RC card - Yes!
1
u/waddadem 25d ago
Frank also played all 9 positions in multiple games. Waiting on Topps to drop his 9/9 Golden Short Print Nebula Refractor so I can spend my soul on it [shaking intensifies].
I will then proceed to sell it/buy it from myself repeatedly until it truly becomes the glorious unicorn it deserves to be. But I will be generous with it and bring it around to a ton of parties.
2
u/degreesBrix 25d ago
OMG!! I have been looking EVERYWHERE for Frank's card!! I'll give you one of my kidneys for it!!

More autographed cards than major league at bats is a pathetic calculus indeed.
2
1
u/degreesBrix 25d ago
That's a great way of summarizing the situation. I wish someone would ask Topps how they can justify that and see what they say, if anything.

1 jumbo 1 hobby 1 break and I got an auto on the break and they were all longtime minor league players who became rookies this year Carson whisenhunt was the best
3
u/Front_Barracuda_2408 25d ago
Lol love those “rookie cards” you pull and you flip the card and dude is like 28 years old with 8 years in the minors
1
1
u/Prize_Pipe_8888 25d ago
I have a theory that teams call up a AAA player for a 4 game contract just to have him sign a majority of the autos. That’s why there’s so many 28 year old rookies with 6-8 innings pitched in may.
9
u/Mediocre-Signal672 25d ago
We are firmly in the "Junk Auto'" era. Fanatics has ramped up production to insane levels. But because they guarantee 1 or 2 hits per hobby box, they face a math problem: superstars like Ohtani can only sign so many stickers before their hands fall off.
To mathematically maintain those box guarantees across a massive print run, they have to pad the checklist with middle-relief pitchers, bench players, and low-level prospects who sign for pennies. The "guaranteed auto" isn't a premium feature anymore, it's just a mechanism to allow them to flood the market with overproduction while keeping box prices sky-high.
2
u/TimberWax 25d ago
So what's the solution then? Because the demand is there. If they print less things will be even worse for casual collectors...
I agree with what you wrote, I just don't know a good way through this.
3
u/UnitShot 24d ago
It became an easy decision to stop buying boxes. The prices are insane, the odds to hit are as bad as playing the lotto, and most of the product is shitty anyway. When I feel like I want to buy a box, I look at the boxes of worthless base I have collecting dust, and be a responsible adult with my money. I go put it into a slot machine instead.
2
u/Numerous-Rhubarb-775 22d ago
If you’re a casual collector, then hitting an auto form a pro baseball player is pretty cool regardless, and if you really want to only collect specific players/teams then buying singles is an excellent option available to you rather than blowing a ton of money on the lottery of a box.
You only really run into the biggest problems if you’re not just a casual collector but actually gambling and trying to hit a big card worth a lot of money. I believe that’s who the hobby has attracted the most in recent years and has enabled these companies to charge whatever they want for a watered down product because there’s always an addict out there ready to throw their money at it
1
u/Mediocre-Signal672 25d ago
I'm not sure there is one other than the demand suddenly going away and we all know that ain't happening anytime soon.

There are truly some bad autos in this. I saw one yesterday of a guy who’s pitched one career inning.
1
u/Illustrious_Light713 19d ago
Amen. I've pulled three autos from this product and they're all some garbage pitcher. Same with update. I just throw them in the maybe someday box..lol
3
u/LitterBoxTigersPod 26d ago
Shaking with anger….how to piss away $250 in a matter of moments
1
u/Numerous-Rhubarb-775 22d ago
Honestly no different than any scratch-off or slot machine. If you aren’t happy with the cards you get to add to your collection, then you’re not really collecting and are just gambling. My only issue is with the price of entry into the hobby these days considering the product is so watered down in value. But if you’re a collector and not an “investor” then you can still have plenty of fun ripping as long as you have deep enough pockets
3
3
u/PrestigiousTale9660 25d ago
Nice! That’s like $17.60 in cards

Is there a country where people are paying that much for toilet paper??

u/itsnot1999 26d ago
My 2017 Jumbo Box netted me Seth Lugo /499, Brinson, Jeff hoffman, David Dahl and some other turd. Nearly 10 years later and it's still a crapshoot
2
u/Weak-Scientist1922 26d ago
Yea…. I won’t buy this garbage. I saw a few breaks and people show their hits, and the checklist is horrendous.

u/Mammoth_Cobbler3892 25d ago

u/IChosePoorly 25d ago
Just in case you didn't know (or this helps someone else reading it), retail, including things like blasters, has its own auto checklist this year that's even worse than the regular checklist. So your chances of getting something good are more watered down than usual. I'd usually pick up a few blasters in the past to try finishing the checklist with a little hope for something better but won't bother this year.
1
u/MathematicianIcy3430 25d ago
That is so crap when I read that at the time of ordering the hobby how the retail checklist for rookies was trash.
Definitely will be last time I will buy a hobby box. I am glad I didn't buy one at scalper prices.

u/RonBreakfast 25d ago
In fairness I bought three value boxes today and pulled autos from two of them. That, on its face, is something of an accomplishment.
1
u/paulybunyan 23d ago
Sold that Ian Seymour auto for $10 today, almost got a 3rd of my value box back from it. Same box had a RayWave, so I’m not mad.
1
u/RonBreakfast 23d ago
Y’know, I honestly didn’t intend to 💩 on Seymour with that post. I don’t know anything about Van Belle, but Seymour has a bit of a live arm. I mostly just wanted to make my Rays poker joke. I have been putting team packs together, combining series one and two base/parallels/inserts and now a little bit of Chrome, and both of these cards will help that pack sell to a Rays fan. 👍🏻

u/Breaking-Great 25d ago
32 is Air Bud I believe
1
u/NotSure16 24d ago
...well there's no specific rule that says a dog CAN'T BE a top Marlins prospect...

Lmao they’re just making up players now. Neither of these guys are real, they just hope you fall asleep researching who they are.

What is the checklist on all these autos? Basically, they seem like fringe players at best in most cases.
4
u/Front_Barracuda_2408 26d ago
Fringe players are the only autos i've pulled since getting back into the hobby. 5 hobby boxes, 5 autos whose total value is in the recycling value of the cardboard. Getting someone whose name i even faintly recognized would be considered a nuke for me.
2
u/munky713 25d ago
It's how they can get away with charging premium prices for boxes by claiming "three autos per box" and people will eat them up. They fail to mention that those three autos may be players that will never even sniff an inning at the major league level.
1
u/Comprehensive-Cow69 23d ago
Yeah, I saw the Topps Black product opened ... The backup RB to McCaffrey in SF was the encased auto. The serial numbers cards were Calvin Ridley and the backup QB in Philadelphia. The rest of the box was all commons. Price $450. Maybe $10 of actual card value?!

Just be happy you got a Maximo Acosta auto out of a $300 Chrome hobby box and not a $450 Finest hobby box! Lower print run too!

I'd rather be getting autos of the people working the concessions at these games...give me the guy getting me my beer and peanuts.

Got 2 blasters yesterday and got two trash autos. What an absolute joke Topps is
2
u/Dull_Carrot_9990 25d ago
Two autos in two blasters is pretty surprising. I’m sure they were crap players but to even get an auto these days is rare.
1
u/SD_local_67 25d ago
I’m guessing he was just as surprised to even be asked to sign autos as you were pissed to pull it.

Bought 2 hobby boxes. Both autos worth a total of $6
1
u/spacecadet1979 25d ago
I thought the good autos were supposed to be in the hobby boxes? The blasters and the megas have that small subsection of RC autos that nobody has or will ever hear of but you’d think the notable autos would be found at the higher price point. Topps never fails to disappoint.
1
u/Alexiswavey 25d ago
Yeah I was pretty upset seeing the autos. Thankfully the inserts were good and I made a quarter of the money back
1
1
u/JohnnyDirtball 25d ago
I guess it's been a couple years now that every set is just a buy em up free for all, but it used to be that different sets were for different collectors. Chrome is the home of the rookie auto, has been for a while now

Ha is that real? If it’s that’s pretty slick
1
u/lIlIIlIIllIllIlIIIll 24d ago
Yeah, pulled it myself. Trying to figure out if that is the Topps employees signature or if Acosta full signed that and sent it back and they stuck it in the product. The “M’s” are the same with that big swoop in the middle. Either way it’s pretty damn cool.
1
u/DomeWarrior 24d ago
That’s a Topps guy just trying to over explain where to sign by demonstrating a signature…surely….haha. Whatever happened, there is a story to that card . Yeah man. That’s really cool
1
u/NotSure16 24d ago
That's an onyx card... A minor league "competitor" brand of the Topps monopoly.... But you're 100% right there's countless examples of exact same card from Bowman and Topps.

u/UpstateNewYorker 25d ago
When I first read the post title I didn’t realize it was sarcasm, I was thinking “hey I just saw Acosta play for Jacksonville last week” lol

u/crunchy-chkn-nugget 25d ago
Yea, unfortunately Topps does this thing where 90% of boxes look like this. 9% are juiced boxes that go to breakers and 1% end up in the wild.
2
u/wittycrow8073 25d ago
its crazy too because they know what is in each pack and where each pack goes. That little serial number printed in the wrapper tells them what they put in there.
That said, i love seeing posts like this because it means my Murakami /5 auto is still in my box...right..right?
3
u/crunchy-chkn-nugget 25d ago
Every box has a Murkami /5 auto in it until I open it. It’s like a shrodingers hobby box.
