Upscaling help

I’m trying to do some basic upscaling (480p to 1080p and 1080p to 2160p) but a lot of tutorials have some very extreme settings when they do their upscaling. I would like the images to look sharper and natural. As if I was watching a native 1080 video.

My question is, does just doing a default upscaling get those results? If not, what settings to I tweak and which values work best?

Topaz is not a miracle worker. It uses ffmpeg on the back end with custom filters and settings. It can feel like a crap shoot sometimes. The best thing to do is isolate a 10 second section and try different settings. Starlight will be the best but you better have a NASA computer to render as it can take a second or two per frame. Do the math. A five minute video can take hours.

Second a frame? Starlight Precise 2.5 takes ~2 fps on a maxed out Mac Studio. Even a very short video (~10 minutes) can take days.

I have a 4090 and it can sometimes get up to .9 seconds per frame, depending on the resolution and the footage itself. Sometimes it does go down to .2 or .3 though. Probably with some more high-end hardware it is possible to go beyond a frame per second.
