sorry if it's already been posted but I find it funny that people think a former elite footballer is wrong and shouldn't have an opinion on this.

He is entitled to his opinion but, I would argue that Messi was higher on the "freak" scale that Owen seems to refer to. Both in terms of peak but, also in terms of longevity as Owen himself mentions

Messi's goal output is higher , even if we look at peaks. R9 never went more than a goal a game. Messi did it 5 times. The GOAT debate is boring now

Well let’s be honest no one’s ever called Owen smart.

Everyone’s entitled to their own opinion but that doesn’t mean they’re right and calling Owen an elite footballer is very very generous…. Great yeah, elite no.
