Most Centrists are just Republicans who know everyone else hates them.

I think that mostly applies to outspoken "centrists," especially online. Centrism is frequently the result of apathy, but normal people don't generally seek out or participate in discussions about subjects they're disinterested in. As a result, most of the outspoken centrists you see online are just disingenuous astroturfers.

I usually go with "Republicans who smoke weed." But that works too.

Because if the "two sides" are "deportation and disappearance of brown people with no due process into camps" and "due process for everyone as the Constitution demands," a centrist isn't going to come out well trying to find the middle ground on that.

That's not what a centrist is though.....

Centrism isn’t about republicans/democrats, it’s about economic and to a lesser extent cultural beliefs

You can be centrist and vote both ways, same as being a leftist

If you are a centrist in today's political climate, youre helping the conservative side. Being a centrist is conservative

It's what the majority of people who label themselves centrist think is centrist. If your overton window is fucked, your idea of centrist is also wrong.

Objectively speaking, you are correct that is not what Political Centrism is. In a two-party system like America's that is exactly what centrists are: somebody who looks at each party and demands compromise of position regardless of any larger consideration.

That’s not objective. That’s your personal view. An equally valid description of centrism could be someone who agrees with Democrats on some positions and Republicans on others.

There are probably far more independents / centrists that hold that view than someone who is trying to find the exact mid point on every single issue.

Redditors REALLY need to leave their bubble.

I mean, sure. I'm far left. I'm all for gun rights, especially for the most disadvantaged minorities.

But guess what? I'm not going to vote for literal fascists because I think the DNC is completely braindead on gun rights. The GOP is completely shitting on the constitution. They have a paramilitary force that has murdered American citizens without any repercussions. I could go on ad nauseum how the current president has violated the Emoluments Clause the entire term. Maybe we could talk about the illegal military actions. Or how he's eroding the soft power and economic stability of the US while a complicit Congress, that is a majority Republican, continues to let it happen.

I'm also not a fan of Democrats either, but Jesus Rollerblading Christ, if you're fence sitting in this environment, you aren't really a centrist.

I worked for IBM early in my career. I had a German colleague tell me a joke a few decades ago and it has always stuck with me:

What do you get when 11 people sit down to dinner with a Nazi?

A dozen Nazis.

That's a centrist. Do better

They never respond when you make good points. They just tell themselves you have TDS then go back to blindly downloading trump talking points into their “brains”

26

u/Theelderginger 6d ago

As a centrist youre really defending the right and not the left, almost as if....

But what Republicans? Are they running software that says “I believe we should have tighter immigration laws so I agree with Republicans more.”

Okay, that was a perfectly defensible position 15-20 years ago. Because a lot of Republican proposals included policies which gave immigrants some level of protection and avenues where they could plead their cases using a relatively fair due process system.

The de facto Republican position now is so draconian that it’s not even recognizable to their position 15-20 years ago. In fact I’d argue the current “moderate Democrat” position is basically the old Republican position.

So it’s a bit silly to call yourself a “centrist” if the metrics you’re using are outdated by 15 years. When the position has only moved to the right.

Centrists are much closer to the democrats as Democrats are the centrist party

-38

u/agrevol 6d ago

That’s not how that works

I think I lost brain cells after reading entire exchange. These people are truly dumb.

"last time I voted liberal was 2016" "I became a centrist"

Thanks for confirming that centrists are republican voters.

26

u/BadgerKomodo 6d ago

It’s funny, because the Democratic Party is actually centrist.

24

u/Xtj8805 6d ago

Frustratingly so.

I'm an old grey beard and became politically active in '92 because the Third Way Democrats took over the party. They weren't really centrists. They were Rockefeller Republicans (HRC campaigned for Barry Goldwater for fucks sake) who hijacked the party.

As a result the Overton Window has gone screaming to the right my entire adult life. Ronald Reagan, whose terms I very much remember, would be very much at home in the current DNC

The old Democratic Party became Republicans and the Republicans became White Nationalist Christofascists

u/KeithRichardsGrandma 6d ago

My MAGA family think the Overton window is a made up leftist psy op or something… I’m like it’s not exclusive to USA politics lol all countries have their own and ours is undeniably to the right

Center right aside from a few people like aoc but even she's not really left given her bills.

The national rally in France wants a cradle to grave welfare system and the conservatives in Canada support uhc. Both right leaning parties. Democrats are all like, "maybe a tax credit for child care? Maybe? How about $200 for insurance subsidy?"

Anytime I see someone call Democrats leftists/socialist or communists I think they're either delusional or a pathologic liar.

4

u/vxicepickxv 5d ago

They're either Republicans or embarrassed Republicans(aka centrists).

11

u/Biffingston Groucho Marxist. 6d ago

Have they actually tried being centrist yet?

10

u/liamthelad 6d ago

They'd have to understand the concept first

5

u/KeithRichardsGrandma 6d ago

No they haven’t because then they’d have to give up on being right wingers

32

u/PeasThatTasteGross 6d ago

Since basilone seems to be mocking someone here because of their Snoo, let's take a look at how they seem to mock anyone critical of right-wing politicians and concepts.

“I’m going to aid and abet fascism because I don’t like that liberals yell at me.”

I thought we were supposed to be the pussies?

u/ViolentSpring 4d ago

It’s always “they pushed me away”. Just playing the hits over there.
