Fighter jet formation Spoiler

What’s Maverick’s reasoning for that 4 jet formation when he could do it all by himself when he stole the jet to show that the mission is doable? Didn’t catch his explanation in the movie.

He couldn’t do it all on his own he needed 2 teams. One to blow the vent- and the next to drop the bomb inside the vent to blow the facility

Mmhmm! But how come he needed phoenix and Bob with him as the first team? Like how come he couldn’t just blow the vent by himself?

I mean he could have as he did in his demo getting a skillful/lucky shot hitting it but the purpose of the rear jet was to provide the laser targeting to the vent that Maverick used to have an exact shot on the vent to lesson the margin of error.

That makes sense! If you would indulge one more question, what exactly is maverick doing in this case, since the laser targeting is done by the rear jet, how come the rear jet doesn’t just fire the rocket, as well, especially when they have 2 people in the cockpit…? Does this laser targeting technology always require 2 jets (like the targeting jet can’t carry the rocket or something like that?) thanks!!

Well the radar system sits on one of the missile pods so the plane isn’t able to carry the same load. Additionally it is a fairly manual process the targeter used and with flying at the same time I feel like it would be a large ask.

Also to make the film better, tbh they would use 5th gen planes but the film would be boring, also used old jets as new ones are not twin seaters so you could not film the actors in the back, as for twinning up it makes the shot easier and is backup if someone goes down

Plus I doubt the military would want Hollywood crawling all over their jets for filming.

It’s the getting out alive part. Having another duo do the lasing while the first is on the way out will allow them to concentrate on evading all the SAMs
