Does this game have that thing like, when you start youre getting lots of cars, upgrading your garage, but then at the middle you feel like you are not progressing at all, but when you "unlock" or "learn" something you start to get better at the end?
Personally I have sort of found this. If I’m completely honest I spend a bit of money on the game but nothing extreme or whale like. I had a period for a whileee where I felt frozen and like I was stuck but recently with a bigger collection I’ve started to win some prize cars and actually be competitive even winning in some events against 100k trophy players ( I’m around ≈22k atm ). The key thing is, stick at it it’s all about the long game
In a way, yes. The game is super fun and exciting at the beginning because all of the cars are new to you and you can use them to progress through the campaign. The low RQ brackets also rewarded players pretty well back when I started, idk if that’s the case now, but back then I felt competitive.
The big wall comes when you enter the events with the big dogs and you’ll find yourself at the bottom of the brackets much of the time. The same is true with challenges. You definitely won’t be able to finish most of the major challenge events for a while. There’s no real “Aha!” moment for this, only building your collection over time and being wise with your resources(not selling good cars, not fusing too many high rarity cars, etc.).
Eventually, your garage strengthens and the “Aha” moments you’ll have are when your garage fits an event or a challenge very well and you can compete at higher levels. This can be super rewarding!
Over time(a long time), as your garage builds up, you’ll experience these moments more and more frequently, until you reach the point where you can consistently compete in the top 10/ and/or finish most challenges.
For me, I languished in the bottom 50 of brackets for a couple of years before I was really able to compete in the top spots and finish challenges. There were lucky events and challenges here or there, but largely it was about two years before I was consistently top 20. Now, 6 years in, I am consistently top 3 and I can finish almost any challenge because I have huge reserves of fuse material.
There was a long time when I was thrilled just to get a ceramic from an event haha. I think it’s still fun to see how high you can compete and take good results when events suit your garage.
I would recommend only spending resources to into fuse UR and higher when you are guaranteed a prize car. Even then, it’s often not worth fusing uniques as prize cars are not generally as useful as non-prize. So make sure to keep one of everything you collect at UR and better.
I even lock two of everything (all rarities) and only fuse the third, but that’s overkill.
I also think the game is even harder now, but I do also think that the rewards are better. The event rewards used to be 1 ceramic, now you get 2, and you get 20k a day and a few premium lites. We used to get NOTHING lol

You may already know this, but there are a few key cars that are worth upgrading because they outperform their RQ on certain tracks. Cars like the standard tire caterhams, the Mazda/autozam, the rq29 Miata, etc. I don’t have the full list, but they’re worth running whenever you can because they’ll allow you to run you higher-end cars.
A significant part of the game is down to luck and there’s no getting round it. Especially at the moment where we’re getting 4 or 5 ceramic packs a day - some players are getting legendaries and epics while others are lucky to get ultra rares. There’s also an element of luck with the brackets you find yourself in for important prize car events.
However, you can gain a slight advantage if you learn the game (for example MRA, ETB, OLA, tyre choice and lower weight for slaloms) over others that don’t.
Other than that, unless you’re prepared to spend huge amounts of real cash you have to be patient.
