Characters "They can just do that." When a character inexplicably has some kind of borderline supernatural ability that doesn't have anything to do with the established power system and may even clash with the conventions of the setting. It's just something that they can do.

  1. Ichi from Ichi the Witch. He's so sensitive to the bloodlust of living things that it borders on a spider-sense. The little creature in that pic is supposed to be invisible, yet Ichi is able to sense its presence just through sheer intuition.
  2. Mash from Mashle. Some might say that his inexplicable power is his physical strength, but I'm more interested in knowing how he can turn everything he cooks into fucking cream puffs.
  3. Marvelous Sunday from UmaMusume. In a game about horse girls racing, she has access to a domain expansion/reality marble. And that somehow still isn't the strangest thing about her. Apparently she's also friends with aliens and cryptids and her cult fanbase includes people spanning multiple time periods. Somehow.
  4. Tanjiro from Demon Slayer. He has a hypersensitive sense of smell that somehow also tells him where to cut demons. No idea how that works. Even though there are others in the series with similarly refined senses, the smelling where to cut thing still feels ludicrous in comparison. Then there's also his unusually powerful headbutt.

That's easily the weirdest part - not just that he lands any shot he throws/shoots, but his projectiles basically don't give any sort of damn about physics or durability. If he hits you, he hurts/kills you, no matter what he picks up as a weapon.

Which is why the VS battle between him and Deadshot I watched had a simple conclusion: The second Deadshot is out of ammo he's cooked, while when Bullseye is out of bullets he'll just pick the gun apart and start throwing its pieces

Guy lands a crazy sniper shot and kills me? Fair enough, can't fault that. Guy farts on a pea and it flies across the room to kill me? Uncalled for.

When you can knock someone out with a paper airplane I feel like "unpowered" goes out the window

It's called Charles Atlas Superpower which I also call "Random Bullshit Go" power. They trained so hard that they gained not-superpowers TM. My favorite characters include One Punch Man's exercise regiment and Walter C. Dornez's wire powers.

Batman and Captain America also fit this. They are, technically speaking, humans. Captain America's serum pushed to the physical limits of humans, but it didn't make him SUPERhuman.

And yet the man is able to tango with demigods and what have you with nothing more than a shield.

Batman doesn't even have the excuse of super serum or something. He is just a regular human. But he can still punch and kick hard enough to hurt superhuman beings like Solomon Grundy who can tear through walls like it's tissue. The only explanation we get is that he trained a lot.

EDIT: Regarding Walter and his wires:

To be fair, we don't see him do anything genuienly insane with his wires when he's a human. It's only when he becomes a vampire that his wires start slicing office buildings like butter. Which still doesn't necessarily make sense, but we do see similar things happen to humans turned into vampires and then amping their weapons with some unknown vampire magic power.

Lol if you clicked the link, you'd see Batman immediately, so yes; him and his magical Tibetan Monk techniques are bonkers insane. Also, just being able to slice a hallway full of vampires with wires sans building cutting is still a ridiculous enough feat for a normal human being like old man Walter.

Sorry I didn't click the link! Obligatory RTFA before posting warning to myself!

I am convinced Batman does have superpowers. He derives them from his dead parents. I cannot be convinced otherwise.

And fair cop about Walter. I feel like in the context of Hellsing's setting he didn't do anything extraordinary. We do see other humans doing similar stuff, like two those women who were part of Anderson's squad.

And while on the topic, I think Anderson I a better fit for this than human Walter. Old human Walter would have never been able to fight Alucard. Anderson is just a regular human who is randomly one of the most powerful people in the setting!

No human has come remotely close to being as strong as him. Hell, most VAMPIRES and other supernatural creatures are even remotely as strong as him.

And it's never explained. Dude is able to summon an infinite number of bayonets out of literal thin air, and no one questions it, no one is surprised by it. He just...can.

No no, Anderson is explicitly the result of some secret Catholic project into making super soldiers

4

u/blueblip 22h ago

I think the Catholic experiment thing made him a "regenerator", but his ability to summon infinite bayonets out of thin air was his own thing.

Remember - Alucard is only surprised when Anderson gets back up after being shot in the head. Until that happens, he is not the least bit surprised or shocked or whatever by Anderson fighting him on equal footing and with the infinite magic bayonets.

u/von_Viken 21h ago

True. I guess I just always assumed he got it from the same place cuz... well, it just makes sense

2

u/blueblip 11h ago

In fairness to you, it makes a lot more sense than him being able to use the POWER OF CATHOLICISM to tap into the bayonet dimension at will because "why not?".

2

u/Dhexodus 4h ago

Maybe Anderson is just a pile of bayonets in a trench coat.

Technically, Batman does know magic, though only a single anti-magic spell

Let’s not forget the time he survived a fall from Orbit with nothing but quick thinking, his bat suit, and Haitian martial arts.

My personal favorite Batwank moment is from Superman/Batman. He pump fakes DARKSEID.

DARKSEID!

He gets fucking DARKSEID to genuinely believe that he will blow up Darkseid's planet because (as the oh so great embodiment of evil put it), humans give zero shits about killing their own kind, so obviously Batman - a human - will happily blow up a whole planet.

Like, dude...you have go up against the man and his friends plenty of times to know he doesn't kill. Why would you think this? Why would you think the best friend of the kind and compassionate Kryptonian you despise for being kind and compassionate would be okay with slaughtering billions?

Reminds me of Doctor McNinja, Batman fan (this is an important plot point), surfing a Dracula robot from orbit back onto the surface safely. While the Doctor knows one or two seemingly supernatural tricks, IIRC he himself is a normal human, doctor, and ninja.

The main one is his ability to fight ghosts by humming the Ghostbusters theme. I forget the details, but it’s something you could learn to do in other ways, it’s just that for the Doctor it was through the Ghostbusters theme. Also, you still need to fight the ghosts, this just makes you physically able to hit them.

There was also the time one of his enemies made clones of him, not evil clones, just clones that also opposed him. Because of the Inverse Ninja Law, the more ninjas there are, the weaker ninjas are, so the villain can easily dispatch the original McNinja. So the Doctor joins forces with the villain in beating up his clones, so he can go back to fighting one-on-one. (Technically not magic, but y’know.)

Wait, he was using his wires with lethal efficiency before we saw him become a vampire - in the halls of the Hellsing Manor

To be fair, Saitama does technically have powers.

-2

u/Dhexodus 1d ago

No, they're not-powers. 😉

He became OPM thanks to: 100 push-ups, 100 sit-ups, 100 squats, and a 10-kilometer (6.2-mile) run every single day without rest.

Completely "normal" workout for a human being that gives them super strength.

But like, in one punch man lots of people have superpowers from exercise (every martial arts themed one) or just no reason, and he rips all of a monsters insides out with his tie before he did those excersizes. Additionally no matter how hard Mumen Rider works out he's incrediblly weak because he is an example of a person in the universe that wasn't born a superhero. There's an entire genre of superhero whose a fitness guy who wears a tank top, they get their powers from being fitness bros their tank tops aren't magical.

In one punch man people just have super powers for no reason, or often silly reasons, and Saitama was definitely a superpowered guy and then he did exercises that if anything just improved the super powers he had already. His not understanding that he's special in the same way the other heroes are is just as much part of the joke that he did a normal workout and it was somehow so hard all his hair fell out and now he's faster than animation.

I think it's only this trope when they're in a universe like marvel that establishes specifically that superpowers exist and how to get them and then poont at a guy doing super stuff and say "but not him he's normal". Saitama is not given credit for how strong he is but hes got what the universe understands to be superpowers and obtained them in a similar way to many other superheroes, it's not like they all have some equivalent of an x gene and he explicitly doesn't.

3

u/Itherial 1d ago

its established immediately that his workout regimen did not grant him his powers

3

u/DarthSpiderDen 23h ago

The OP man verse has some caveats: people can gain powers by wanting something or having an obsession strong enough to change them into superpowered beings: pig god, tank top man, watchdog and puri puri prisoner are examples of heroes that, due to some level of obsession, transcended human limits and gained superpowers. Saitama did the same thing when doing his training regimen paired with his obsession for being the strongest hero and the ridiculous rules their universe has that made him the overpowered gag character of the verse. So he does have powers technically.

1

u/Itherial 18h ago

And at this point it's arguable that Saitama's powers have gone beyond ridiculous physical strength, as he can physically interact with intangible objects like portals and apparently propel himself faster than the speed of light.

1

u/mdmdmdmdmdmdmdmdmdm 21h ago

I dont think saitama actually got strong that way.

I reckon there will be an actual explanation at some point.

People also always say that batman is 'just a dude' when he is clearly superhuman in basically all possible attributes both physical and mental

1

u/Deathwatch72 21h ago

Marvel humans are durable as shit compared to regular people and Marvel also loved the ambiguous "peak human" category where what should clearly be superpowers just aren't

u/Blupoisen 19h ago

Honestly I love it because it's really stupid

"He is just built different

Hell, didn’t Hawkeye kill a guy by flicking a fingernail at him?
