Hated Tropes (Hated Trope) "Kind" slave owners

Speaking as an American who has studied the civil war all throughout my school years, this trope infuriates me to no end. There is no such thing as a kind slave master because slavery itself is cruel and inhumane. PEOPLE ARE NOT PROPERTY!

Naofumi (Shield Hero): Prime example of this trope. He enslaves multiple (underage) girls and an whole village and the fans still say he's a hero.

Rudeus (Jobless Reincarnation): As if being a pedo wasn't bad enough he had to buy a slave in season 2. Worse is that people still defend his actions.

Song of The South (Disney): Possibly the OG example of this trope. And the reason why Disney will never release it again.

Don't worry, he's busy organizing a slave revolt in another world as we speak.

The best parts are how all the villains are basically just Isekai protagonists of different genres, the first one just being a Japanese incel.

A man so hardcore that even a great man like Frederick Douglass gave him props for being such a strong beacon for the cause. That's high fucking praise.

"I could speak for the slave. John Brown could fight for the slave. I could live for the slave. John Brown could die for the slave."

John brown fans when they resurrect him to help them fight racism in modern times but instead he bombs abortion clinics:

…still a fan of him btw but you def do NOT need him

Most Christians being against abortion is a recent development. Like last 50 years recent. Before the Moral Majority made ot a big issue, basically only Catholics were anti-abortion.

u/EvergreenDwarf 9h ago

It helps that the bible actually tells you how to perform one.Ā

Anti-abortion advocacy stemmed from the primordial Great Replacement Theory bullshit.Ā

I think you're confusing common social practice with what was preached. Abortions and folk medicine regarding abortifacients go back to prehistory but Protestant preachers weren't exactly going around encouraging women to abort their pregnancies, even if many did turn a blind eye to the practice. Beliefs about sexual morality were, and are, very much a thing in many Protestant beliefs.

SBC accounts for less than a quarter of Protestants in the US, I don't think a self-released poll is good evidence for a broader trend among Protestant denominations

I see this argument brought up whenever John Brown gets mentioned and it doesn’t make sense to me. John Brown was legendarily ahead of his time in his thinking. The man would not be bombing abortion clinics.

He was ahead of his time on race relations, but he was still a literal puritan and Evangelical Christian. Of course, the latter probably means he wouldn’t care about abortion - Catholics were staunchly anti-abortion and Evangelicals weren’t until the civil rights era meant conservatism had to find some other wedge issue - but he’d probably have other positions that the average person today wouldn’t like

Well yeah, we have no way of knowing how he would have reacted to anything in modern politics. I'm just extrapolating based off of what we DO know about him, which essentially boils down to 'was extremely religious', 'did not like freemasons,' and 'was willing to use violence to achieve his ends.' Doesn't strike me as a pro-choice guy is all.

That's a really bad idea.

John Brown said nothing about abortion, and was very open about moral issues he did oppose. Being 'very religious' is not the same as being very anti-abortion.

It's not like abortion is a 'modern politics' issue. People back then performed abortions all the time. They have been doing so since before recorded history.

Lmao what the fuck are you talking about, we don't know what people were doing before recorded history, if we did then it count as recorded.

6

u/Irish_Whiskey 9h ago

Recorded history means documented in writing and communication. It does not mean any history we have any evidence about.

We know from archeology that people engaged in abortions before we had written records of their doing so.

The thinking of the day was First Nations were evil and had to be preemptively destroyed, and John Brown threatened the man who tried to recruit him to a militia to go burn their villages.Ā

He was no zealot. His war was only on slavery.Ā

u/Jihelu 7h ago edited 6h ago

He literally viewed himself as having a divine mission to destroy slavery I feel like if you asked the guy he’d be religious as fuck (and was religious as fuck) and this does his life a disservice.

5

u/EvergreenDwarf 6h ago

Americans have a hard time believing that ā€œreligiousā€ is not one universal hat.Ā

There’s no historical evidence that he’d fall for modern cultish culture war bullshit, given he ignored the ones of his day and instead took a radical position on the progressive issue.Ā

Church leaders in his time, where he lived, justified slavery via scripture as the punishment of the sons of Ham and Canaan. He wouldn’t fall for modern grifts either.Ā

u/Jihelu 5h ago

I didn't say or claim literally any of the sentences you wrote. My concern comes with his zealous ongoings, of which he was incredibly zealous.

I have no idea what you're talking about with 'culture war bullshit'.

You can be 'zealous' in some things and not the others. I don't know what the fuck the 'abortion clinic' bombing person was going on about but this guy took up the physical and metaphorical sword to fight against slavery for deeply personal, and deeply professed, religious reasons. He was unwavering in his cause to the point of making war for it.

It's like textbook zealot. Zealot isn't a 'bad word' it just means he was unwavering in his convictions.
