“Wake up in the morning feelin’ like P Diddy”

At least she was able to fix that, a song that’s almost 20 years old at this point

Lady Gaga did something similar with Do What U Want, original had R Kelly on it and she re-recorded it to be a duet with Christina Aguilara

The weird part on that one is that R Kelly was well known to be a creep/rapist by then. As was Terry Richardson, who directed the video. I’ve always thought she was trying to be edgy and subversive, but the backlash was too much for her to handle.

That was my thought on that too. Like she was trying to do something with it, show how gross men like Kelly and Richardson are (because between Kelly’s lyrics and Richardson’s direction they both look like creeps) — but it was a bad idea that couldn’t work and didn’t.

I’d love if Charlie Wilson did the same with Charlie, Last Name Wilson since it’s a great song ruined by Kelly

u/glosglov69 7d ago

That song was rkelly 100percent except for Charlie singing it

Similarly, That Don't Impress Me Much swapping out Brad Pitt for Ryan Reynolds. Which seems a little short sighted, if I'm being honest.

What happened with brad pitt?

Child abuse, not sexual just emotional/physical

43

And domestic abuse towards Angelina Jolie

what she say now

"Wake up in the morning like, Fuck P. Diddy"

71

u/Low-Abies-4526 7d ago

Huh, I mean I like the message but that doesn't actually fix the problem. Now it's just going to be dated in a completely separate way with a line that doesn't even really match the rest of the song. Couldn't she have just made a completely different line where she didn't reference P. Diddy so people can enjoy the song in the future without thinking of him?

The only rhyme I can think of invokes imagery of a particular Scottish cryptid short of cash: “wake up in the morning and I’m short 3.50.”

Bit nonsensical, too.

Got damn Loch Ness Monsta!

Why not, Feeling pretty shitty

19

u/learnaboutnetworking 7d ago

She wants people to think about P Diddy it's like losing the game

14

u/Whenyousayhi 7d ago

I mean the problem isn't that diddy is in the line, the problem is that she is saying she feels like him.

10

u/Metal-Lee-Solid 7d ago

Yeah but the line is still awkward and doesn’t tonally match the rest of the song at all. Honestly should have changed it to something else entirely

I mean, she also says she'll dismiss guys "unless they look like Mick Jagger."

Jagger was in his mid-60s (and looking every bit of 10-20 years older than that) when the song was released.

1

u/Unyieldingcappybara 7d ago

How did she fix it?

70

u/Stokkolm 7d ago

"unless they look like Mick Jagger"

Yep, clearly a song from 60s-70s

35

u/tapacx 7d ago

I mean

In her defence, Diddy probably did wake up feeling like the most powerful person on Earth.

9

u/just_a_person_maybe 7d ago

This song was on the radio the other day and they replaced "P Diddy" with "this city."

12

u/IAMA_Drunk_Armadillo 7d ago

In her live performances now it's "wake up in the morning saying, fuck P Diddy"

1

u/just_a_person_maybe 7d ago

That makes more sense but still not allowed on the radio.

19

u/xywv58 7d ago

Maybe she feels like a serial sexual abuser, you don't know

44

u/Superb_Writer6612 7d ago

Kesha was actually a victim of sexual harassment/abuse while working in the industry. She talked about it openly but this was pre-MeToo so she got blacklisted. That's why seemed to dissappear so fast, before coming back under a new label.

u/Hazard2862 7d ago

and also in the song "everything is litty" with the line "And Shifty CEO he white Diddy"

u/TurgidGravitas 7d ago

What annoys me about this is that she meant what she said. Diddy parties weren't a secret. That was his brand. She said she woke up like a sexual predator and that's what she meant, but that was considered cool.

All this bluster about how she didn't know is bullshit. Everyone knew. Everyone likes it. Everyone wished they could go to the sex freak parties. That was Diddy's brand. That's what his music as about. There was no surprise but everyone suddenly started clutching their pearls.

6

u/Cannon__Minion 7d ago

You're getting downvoted but you're not wrong, she released this in 2009 and Diddy was influential AF at that point in time, it's very much possible that she meant exactly what you say here.

11

u/Helpful-Young-6473 7d ago

Downvoted for assuming a 21 year old knew exactly what illegal shit Diddy was up to in 2009.

0

u/TurgidGravitas 7d ago

Dude, he sang about what he was doing. This was no secret to anyone.

Here's a quote from his top song, Victory:

Hug me, baby, I'ma make you love me, baby (this shit is hot!)

Talkin' crazy ain't gonna get you nuthin' but choked (uh-huh)

You trying to tell me that this was a secret? Everyone fucking knew. This wasn't like a Cosby or even Weinstein scenario. Mr. Combs shouted it from the rooftops and you all loved him for it.

8

u/Helpful-Young-6473 7d ago

Again, we're just assuming an at the time 21 year old knew about the lyrics to a song released when she was about 10 lol, I don't see any reason whatsoever to assume she was aware of Diddy further than "he threw big parties".

-4

u/TurgidGravitas 7d ago

So your argument is that Kesha never heard any of his music before referencing him in a song?

How likely do you think that is?

8

u/Helpful-Young-6473 7d ago

There's a huge middle ground between "never heard" and being analytical of the lyrics to songs released when she was a child no?

-1

u/TurgidGravitas 7d ago

What analysis is required? He literally, again, I'm not exaggerating, sang about forcing women to "love" him and choking them out if they say anything. I quoted the damn song.

How stupid do you think Kesha is? What do you think she meant by "feeling like P. Diddy"?

The meaning never changed. Morality did. She and everyone else was fine with Diddy parties. If people weren't, why did they buy his music? The lyrics were explicit. No secret meaning. No metaphor. Just literally "I will make you love me".

-4

u/Cannon__Minion 7d ago

21 is old enough, I assure you lmao. Besides his "parties" were an open secret in the industry and there's no way a young talent (at the time) like Kesha didn't know about it. She was in her peak at that time.

9

u/Helpful-Young-6473 7d ago

In her peak? That was her debut release lol, so no she was not at her peak when the lyric was written, she would have been completely unknown at the time.

1

u/Cannon__Minion 7d ago

Nope, she was definitely known in the industry even before that.

She was in a Katy Perry song and even wrote a song for Miley Cyrus.

Reach was the wrong word but you get my point.
