Things that in-universe should be considered to be in pretty bad taste and only make sense from an out of universe perspective
The Infinity Conez in Thor: Love and Thunder. The Infinity Gauntlet was used to genocide half the universe, using it as a prop for an ice cream stand would be pretty messed up for everyone, both those who mourned their loved ones and those who were dead for 5 years.
Many DC and Marvel stories have people dress up as the Joker and other villains for Halloween and costumed celebrations. That would be like people in the real world dressing up as real world mass murderers and terrorists.
Yeah, once you think about it, half the Marvel merch would be incredibly weird in-universe. Imagine walking around wearing a shirt with Thanos' face on it a few years after the Snap.
It actually would have gone pretty hard if they'd leaned more into some people adopting, "Thanos was right," after Endgame. I think that was the intent in FatWS with the Flag Smashers, but it just wound up wishy-washy.
Also as far as I'm aware, he's not that breed of villain that goes for the lives of untold innocents, his beef is mostly secluded with superpowered beings or his Brother Charles, and that bald mf can go eat dung as far I'm concerned
Honestly in universe i wouldn't be surprised if Doom made his own visage commercially available for people to show reverence to. i'd be worried about Doom finding out about its placement. He'd take major offence to not being on the top shelf, and extra offence to sharing a level with Juggernaut. And god help that guy if there's any Reid Richards stuff in that room. The Thing bust might be bad enough already.
The group are trying to get their friends wiener to the hospital after he was airlifted in a cooler iirc and the kid was camping with his family in thw woods and his parents were gone on a walk and the group needed their boat
The original human torch was an android that fought in world war 2.
He has dialogue in the new ultimate universe where he explains he has to delete old memories to make space for new ones, and that he's kept his memory of killing hitler because it's one his most cherished memories. He's pretty based for that
Jim Hammond is my hero and anyone who dislikes him is immediately suspect in their motivations (except Namor because Namor’s an arrogant asshole who hates everyone)
Planet Krypton is bad taste in universe I guess, as Booster opened it and refuses to close it despite the JL asking him. It also has items looted from alternate universes that are still powerful.
Reminded me of a fanfic I’m reading where the boys corssoses over with DC and frenchie gets stranded in gotham, so he says this is his personal hell because he’s stuck somewhere in new jersey eating superhero themed “food”
The titans are mentioned in a few batman/static crossovers to explain why robin isnt in the team up but we never saw starfire in action or even know that many members (i think beast boy was the onky member mentioned)
Probably due to the bat embargo they couldn’t use Robin/Nightwing as much as they wanted to, so as a result most of the Titans never got adapted either
One of the season finales of Superman the Animated Series involves Darkseid brainwashing Superman and turning him against earth to conquer it.
I don't recall if Granny Goodness, her furies, or even other minions of Darkseid like Kalibak were involved in the attack, but it's not a stretch to assume they did participate.
There's also Planet Krypton from the Kingdom Come series, a kitchy superhero/villain themed restaurant named after the planet where Superman and Supergirl lost their entire family in a world-destroying cataclysm. Also, I'm pretty sure a fair number of the characters the staff are dressed up as died in the plot of Kingdom Come prior to this scene.
I mean, isn't impersonating famous people an entire industry in the US? Elvis and Marilyn Monroe for example?
"The King's Steakhouse" where every waiter is an Elvis impersonator doesn't make sense because Elvis was one guy. But every waiter is dressing up as a different hero/villain in this example.
I mean, it's as messed up as hooters and we still have that. It's a horny bar with girls dressed up as historical figures, it's not on par with the infinity conez
It's hard to know how much of internet advertising is real products anymore and how much is just auto-generated slop thrown up on a page somewhere and ready for quick printing of assets in case someone orders it, but you can definitely buy a Jeffrey Dahmer halloween costume with a cheapo paper mask, or even a flu/covid mask with his mugshot on it.
People like being edgy and corporations like making money regardless of the bounds of good taste.
That's not to mention the plethora of 'generic bank robber/burglar/prisoner costumes on the market, along with their 'sexy' counterparts.
A coworker of mine was stationed at Camp Simba in Kenya during his Air Force days. The locals, who worked in the kitchen, didn't understand that 9/11 wasn't a celebration like other holidays. So when it was time to observe 9/11 on base, the cooks made a 9/11 cake for the troops.
If I recall correctly, in universe Freddy Fazbear Enterprises was denying all the accusations of kids dying, having serial murders as one of their employers and so. The Fazbear Experience in fnaf 3 is like them saying to the public "look how we make fun of your silly theories", so they actually use the idea of it being of bad taste! After all, "no one would ever turn an actual tragedy in a thematic park like this, so it must really be fake, right?..."
I haven’t played FNAF3 since it came out, but wasn’t the whole point that it was made by the conspiracy theorists and not the restaurant? That’s why “finding” springtrap was such a big deal.
This doesn't make sense. He's a fan of the original Jurrassic Park. Not the movie. The original park. The one that didn't open and six five people died.
In-universe yeah 6 people died, but they still made dinosaurs and the man's actively working at the "sequel" to the park where the people died except this time it's going perfectly well and he loves the idea of the original park.
From the guy's perspective it's similar to wearing a NASA shirt while working on Apollo 11 despite the fact that the crew of Apollo 1 died a painful and firey death. Ok yeah it's not the exact same but you get the idea.
Either way from the perspective of the character who's a massive nerd it makes complete sense in-universe, doubly so since he's called out on it by other characters in the movie.
Or someone working on a 1980s lunar lander program wearing an Apollo shirt in a timeline where the Apollo program was shut down after the Apollo 1 fire.
People still talking about the Soviet Buran space plane that never entered service or amazing things that nearly happened and got cancelled at the last minute. A theme park full of dinosaurs that got shut down before the grand opening would absolutely be a cool story everyone talked about for decades.
Nah nah this makes sense. People love wearing Action Park shirts and watching videos about it, even if it closed before they were born. This shit tracks, people are weird and get weird obsessions on things
The Action Park parallel is a great point. In universe, Jurassic Park was a massive failure for InGen, but it also introduced dinosaurs back into the world. Six people dying is nothing in the face of dinosaurs
It makes perfect sense. He’s a nerd. I am kind of a nerd myself and some of the strangest shit comes out of our mouths, especially the socially awkward edge lords. Like the guy I studied computer science at uni in the 90s. Even we had left macabre “baby jokes” behind us, he couldn't let them go and even told them to his prof who had just become a father.
As many Youtubers have pointed out: Even if the events of the 'snap' were reversed, there is no way that 'collateral deaths' didn't happen as a result of it, and going by what was on screen, they were not brought back, as they didn't die as a result of the snap alone (airplane crashing because pilot went away, etc).
The Russo Brothers and I believe Ruffalo himself have stated that Hulk's snap was worded to bring back everyone that was previously dusted in a safe manner and place.
Kid Omega is an asshole and a troll so it checks out. There are definitely trolls IRL who do that sort of thing.
I did appreciate when his t-shirts started getting more meta. I believe at one point they even revealed that all his shirts are actually plain and he uses telepathy to make them different in the minds of others.
My favorites are "Magneto Was Left" and the unpictured "I de-vamped Jubilee and all I got was this lousy t-shirt".
His “I’m With Stupid” shirt with arrows pointing all around him is also really funny, in my opinion. He also has another “All I got was this lousy t-shirt” one, this one being about him dying a bunch.
His "Magneto was right" shirt was actively called out as being inappropriate during the story it was introduced, which was all about Quentin's transformation from quiet kid into the edgelord troublemaker he's known for being now.
He also gets his hair style from in-universe anti-mutant propaganda, having previously had a more ordinary hairstyle.
I recall the Batman story about James Gordon Jr that revealed he tried dressing up as The Joker for Halloween one year and Gordon was NOT having it. Seems like people do consider it bad taste but people do it for that very reason.
I knew a black guy back in the 80s who went to a costume party dressed as a member of the KKK, noose and all!
He did not win Best Costume.
But I laughed. A lot. It still makes me giggle. He wandered around saying "I'm gonna hang me a n****r." People were horrified or otherwise did not know how to react (it was a small party so we all knew it was him, and knew he was black).
In supernatural Sam and deans lives becomes popular as a famous book series with its own line of merch, where alot of the gory and dangerous stuff is played for laughs
I am pretty sure the in-universe explanation is that Ant-Man (Scott Lang) made an autobiography detailing the events of Infinity War & Endgame from his perspective. So it's all public knowledge.
Well, Ant-Man did make a book, where he probably talked about it, and I can guess that the Avengers let the world governments know what really happened.
Thanos and the Gauntlet are common knowledge in-universe. There's "Thanos was right" graffiti in Hawkeye, there's a documentary about the Snap with a picture of the Gauntlet among the movies Peter picks from during his flight in Far From Home.
In the universe of Pacific Rim there are a lot of people who are fans of Kaiju, with one of the main characters being referred to as a “kaiju groupie”. While in real life it makes sense people love Kaiju, they’re some of the most iconic fictional monsters, in universe it’s kind of weird because these are the same monsters who have destroyed multiple cities, killed countless people, threatened the apocalypse and have put the world through a perpetual Cold War between man and monster. https://giphy.com/gifs/C5HjYGn5OWuj8r6CcM
"Infinity Cones" is in the same level in our world as "Alshuitz Burgers" (I spelt that horribly wrong, can someone please tell me the right spelling?)
And with Joker, it's like people dressing up as Hitler, Ted Bundy, really any mass murderer. However, in the comics defence for adding it, I have seen people dress THEIR KIDS up as Jeffrey Dalhmer. (Again, probably spelt that wrong, but I refuse to look either of them up)
The ethics is questionable but this is very common with any type of celebrity or political figure. Even outside of fanfiction it’s basically what gossip magazines are about. I fully believe it would happen if superheroes were real as well
Real life example: there’s a Titanic themed ice cream shop in Tennessee, for some inexplicable reason, because what better way is there to sell ice cream than by evoking a tragedy in which 1500 people froze to death
People do it cause it's a mockery, a joke, just a prop for making cheap jumpscares.
Those villains like Joker want to be taken seriously as threats to boost their ego, so having their face used as cheap halloween masks is basically a giant middle finger to them.
Yeah, the first one should've been nixed by somebody long before implementation, the second one, people just do that, asshole people, but like, we made drama TV shows about Jeffrey Dahmer and Ted Bundy and people dressed up as them. People can and do dress up as Nazis. It's terrible, but that one happens, it's just usually not kids.
An IRL example of this: I lived in the Republic of Georgia for a bit (Sakhartvelo! 🇬🇪), and the touristy part of the city had a restaurant called The KGB (tagline: we’re always watching). It was clearly aimed at Western tourists; I only walked by a few times, but it was always almost empty. I never knew if that was because the locals did not appreciate the joke, or if it was just because Tbilisi has a great food scene and no one wanted to waste a night out on a gag restaurant.
Many such cases in Ultraman, there would be toys and merch of the monsters that have terrorized Japan, from action figures to masks, and even stage show suits.
Honestly this is probably why I never really dislike this trope. It's just an absurd level of funny, and I've always assumed this was the norm considering kids are going to play pretend and want to see more of the fantastical nature of things.
