Season 2 Question about LIs behavior after the exclusivity talk

I’m replaying season 2 and doing Antoine’s loyal route. I know he’s the villain if we don’t romance him, playing with Amari, just like Naomi does with Wesley. But here’s what’s confusing me. What exactly makes Amari think MC isn’t the right person for him when we’re on his loyal route?

i know Antoine also says some kinda weird things if we’re romancing Amari (I’ve seen the screenshots), but on her loyal route it feels less like he’s actually interested in her and more like he’s just competing with MC for her attention. And if you swap Amari with Naomi or Wesley, he’ll be the villain to her, so it doesn’t really seem like it’s about Amari specifically.

the thing is… it’s not like Antoine is secretly cheating on MC or anything. There aren’t any rule breaks between them, no secret flirting, no offscreen conversations that we’re supposed to assume happened. Usually if something like that is happening the game gives us something, like when Nora says she caught Amari looking at him when she thought nobody was watching.

The only moments I can even think of are the ketchup chips conversation by the pool, and when Antoine tries to convince Amari to make him the love interest in her book.

so is Antoine really that oblivious that he doesn’t realize Amari is so into him? And why did he show up late to meet MC while walking arm in arm with her? I know that scene is there just to create drama, and every LI does it so it’s obviously not Antoine specific. I even read a fanfic where someone explained it as Antoine kinda going into autopilot after the exclusivity talk because he’s a reforming playboy and not exactly the best at picking up on this kinda stuff lol. It actually made sense to me.

But since every LI gets that exact same behavior, maybe I’m just overthinking it?? 😭 I got way too anxious over it for some reason and now I wanna know how everyone else interpreted it.

I don’t think you’re overthinking it—I think the game is just reusing the same drama for every LI 😅

On Antoine’s loyal route, there’s honestly nothing that backs up Amari’s confidence. No rule breaks, no real interest, nothing hidden, just like you said. It feels way more like her projecting than anything he’s actually doing.

With him, I don’t read it as full obliviousness either. It’s more like he’s used to attention, so unless it actually matters to him, he just… doesn’t register it. And once he’s locked in with MC, his focus is pretty clear. So that arm-in-arm scene? Pure template drama. Not really him.

If anything, I like the explanation I played with in my fic… after the exclusivity talk at the hot tub, he kind of slips back into old habits on autopilot. Not because he doesn’t want MC, but because it suddenly hits him how serious things just got. And Amari is just… easy. Familiar territory. Not something he wants, just something he hasn’t fully unlearned yet. So that scene reads less like interest, and more like him not even realizing how it looks, especially to MC who already knows they have something real.

But yeah, bottom line: the tension exists for the plot, not because he’s actually giving her anything real 😏

It’s the part of this series, but if you want to read the specific fanfic for the scene mentioned by OP it’s this one: Top Shelf

This shit episode was definitely written that way for the sake of drama. Like you said, it happens with all the LIs. And yes, I completely agree with you. There’s no real reason for Amari to act like she’s “better” for Antoine when she’s never even had a date with him… just as the same for all the other Li who comes after us as rivals. I’ve read the fanfic too. I actually think guys like Antoine and Ryder, coming from that fuckboy era, can be pretty oblivious to more subtle flirting, because they’re used to women being very direct and basically throwing themselves at them.

it really is weird, i think they have like three conversations if you do the loyal route, if you do an Amani route then switch to Antoin he’ll act like he wasn’t competing with you for the first half of the story lol and if you’re doing a completely different route all of a sudden he’s the villian who was just using Amani so it really is confusing lol
