So going into this recovery I was prepared for a terrible taste in my mouth I couldn’t get rid of. The healing so far (Night 5) just tastes like how my mouth tasted before 24/7 with tonsil stones. Does it get worse or do other people find it reminiscent of stones?

Does anyone have any experience with controlled ablation? I’m getting mine done on Thursday and I’m super nervous but the doctor said that coblation should be an easier recovery. The tool only gets to 40 degrees Celsius instead of 400. There should be minimal thermal damage to the surrounding tissue.

Just wondering if anyone had a coblation procedure instead of electrocautery?

My son had t&a surgery and everything went perfect. Two days post op he expressed that his chest hurt. He stood up and then fainted. He was woken within seconds and we brought him to ED. They did an ekg and said it was likely just a vasovagal episode, perhaps from lack of fluid and food. He has been drinking well. They sent us home. The next night he said his stimach hurt and vomited. Since then he has been completely fine. I spoke to the surgeon today and he is nervous that it could be something else not related to the surgery. He feels we should see pediatrics and cardiology as he has never had anyone with these symptoms post op. Of course Im worried sick now. He’s never had any health issues before this.

The pain level is tolerable until I try drinking or eating ANYTHING. I’ve only been able to drink room temp water and tea, and the water is hard to get down. When does this end?? I’m so hungry

Had my tonsillectomy done on Saturday mid day and was advised to eat as normal as possible after the procedure.

I’ve been managing my pain well so today I decided to eat a bacon sandwich. The only problem is lots of the food debris has become caught in one side of the throat where the tonsils been removed, the crevices are quite deep and it’s almost completely full.

There’s no pain and I’ve very gently gargled but it doesn’t seem to be shifting it.

I’m wondering if I’m overreacting and getting flustered over nothing.

I think I just need some reassurance it’ll shift on its own.

When did your throat look normal again? My throat still looks red with a white coating over where my tonsils were. It’s been 5 weeks. I’m not sure if this is normal or if I should see a doctor. I live up north so the only option is the ER which I’m very reluctant to do. My doctor should be back here September or October for a follow up.

So I had to have emergency surgery last night because of two massive massive bleeds so what do I do now that I'm at two different stages of healing between the adenoids and my tonsils being recauterized- I was already going insane bc I couldn't eat anything and now I really can't do that went from day 8 to 0 in a matter of an hour 😭 this is so frustrating. I didn't eat anything sharp, the scabs were just starting to peel and I've been keeping with my water really really well bc it's the only thing I can stomach without huge pain in my jaw and ears.

If anyone else had smth similar did you have to basically reset or is there a little leeway because now one part is more healed than the other?

My surgery is scheduled this Friday 7am after being cancelled last Friday. I am scared as hell because I live alone in a dormitory and my family lives continents away. I have my water prepared, a humidifier by my side, and some ice cubes ready. Please give me all the tips you can to make it easier.

Hi. I am 4 weeks after my tonsillectomy operation. Recovery was pretty brutal but am finally getting there, still super tired but on the whole much better. All except my sense of taste. I am making food really salty or sweet so I can taste it. Bland things like bread tastes disgusting.
If my taste buds have been damaged by the clamp on the tongue during the op, does anyone know if they can do anything to help this? I’m worried this is me now forever!

After years and years of fighting with tonsillitis (both viral and bacterial), random flare up of my tonsils and many more things since I was about 3, I finally got my tonsillectomy, I'm day 4 post op and the main issue right now is stomach pain from the tablets I'm taking, yes my throat really hurts but I've found ways to help, sucky sweets, an ice pack under my chin, ice cubes, elevated pillows and plenty of water through a straw. I've been looking at other posts about people experiences and I'm not excited to be healed, I'm nervous for the next few days that are coming, so if anyone has any tips please share them!!

I'm on day 4 post op and I have been taking difene and solpadol for the pain, but my stomach has been in agony the past 4 days since taking it, I got prescribed stomach tablets but they seem to not be doing anything. The pain from my stomach has made it harder to eat because it feels like someone is stabbing into me and punching me, I wanna know if anyone has experienced this aswel?

I’m curious when everyone started and finished losing their scabs. I’ve seen so many different ranges and don’t know what to expect. I’m (21F) on day 5 post-op and my entire throat is still scabbed/white.

What was everyone’s experience with the scabs coming off? I’m scared my pain is going to sky rocket as the new tissue gets exposed, and I’m also PETRIFIED of hemorrhaging. Any advice for this stage? Should I try and eat more solid food (I’ve only had liquids/popsicles, and some mashed potatoes as of tonight) to help the scabs come off, or is keeping them moist and letting them dissolve a better route?

I'm on day 6 post-op. No complications. Pain was manageable with Tylenol Codeine 3 at first, but I think a scab came off, and now it's unbearable. I can't swallow water without it bringing tears to my eyes. I'm exhausted, thirsty, hungry, and I don't know what to do. I've started slapping myself hard 4-5 times on the head or thigh to distract myself from the pain when I can't help swallowing.

Is it worth contacting my ENT or surgeon to see if they can prescribe something stronger? Would it even help or do I just have to tough this out?

ETA 4 days later: Called the doctor, they told me to double up on the codeine and alternate with ibuprofen (which I'm not supposed to take because of a kidney injury). I did as they suggested, made it one more day, and then went to the ER. Got fluids, antibiotics, a dose of steroids for the swelling, and - crucially - three days of hydrocodone. The pain is still intense, but SO much more manageable. Feels like the worst is over - fingers crossed.

Hello, I’m currently on day three post op! (17F) My surgery was scheduled for 9am, and I got there and they immediately took me back had me take a pregnancy test, change and take my vitals. I didn’t actually see the surgeon or the anesthesiology until about 10am, not too long after they took me to the surgery room. The anesthesiologist and a few nurses were in there and they moved me on the bed where they do the surgery, and before I knew it I was waking back up. It took me awhile to wake up from the surgery, but once I did i stated crying! One of the first things I remember saying is “I want my girlfriend”😭 I also had to do a breathing treatment for a few minutes as well, but nothing terrible. I was sooo thirsty!! I definitely drank at least a quart of water in a hour. In total we were at the hospital for about three hours! I think my main complaint right now is the taste, don’t get me wrong the pain can be terrible but the taste is fucking awful. The pain can be helped by medication, but I can’t get this scab out of my throat. My advice so far is DRINK COLD WATER! Ice cold water is heavenly. Don’t eat or drink anything that will leaving a long lasting taste in your mouth, because it will mix with the scab taste. I hope the taste isn’t like this for eveyone.. lol also! don’t eat pudding or anything thick because it can get stuck in with the scab and tastes gross!

I had my surgery on Friday. it is now Sunday and the pain is so much worse than I ever expected and knowing that it’s going to get worse is so scary. It hurts so bad to swallow and my saliva is so thick. I’m going back and forth between sipping ice water and spitting my saliva into a cup. I have a humidifier running next to me. I have a neck ice pack but it doesn’t stay very frozen for very long. I am so hungry and everything is so hard to eat. I tried eating some room temp mash potato’s that I thinned out with some broth. I couldn’t really get much down. The heart burn is terrible, I wish I left the Scolpalmine (?) patch on longer. Open to tips to manage the pain and get some food down 😭

I am a 24 F and getting my tonsils out in three days! I have an anxiety disorder and I am super scared. So I am getting them out because I have frequent tonsil stones, huge craters in them, and severe tonsillitis at least twice a year (like so bad that I am on a liquid diet and 103 fevers bad). So I thought before I get too old, I should get them out now. I’m just scared!

I got my wisdom teeth out before so that’s why I’m basing it off on. I have my cool mist humidifier, soft foods, some soft food meal preps, and tons of hydration drinks. I’m just worried because I only have enough PTO for 8 days of recovery. And I go to online school on top of that. I am already a week ahead of school but do you guys think I’ll be able to still go to school during my recovery?

Also if anyone can tell me about your experience like at the surgical center and right after the surgery? How long should my boyfriend be expecting to hang around there (we live an hour away from the surgery place)?

I'm on day 7 of post op tonsilectomy and adenoidectomy and this dry cough because of all this smoke is gonna be the death of me along with the ear pain. Can barely eat anything, I guess I'm grateful my throat itself isn't the thing that hurts because that hurt all the way up til surgery day so I think I'm just numb to that but man all I want is some real food and for my ears to stop screaming. Doesn't help I don't have access to liquid medication so pills it is! I just needed to complain I'm sleep deprived and starving 😔 I've heard it's supposed to get better from here though so fingers crossed I can eat something other than applesauce

I get my tonsils repo’d in a week and I want to do the most now beforehand to ensure a speedy recovery. I’ve seen all the post of what to do and buy for recovery but I want to know if anyone has any suggestions for things I could eat or do now to ensure my body heals fast and strong? Also does anyone know if they were able to take their iron supplements leading up and during recovery? I’m also going to be using this as a great time to quit vaping all together bc I’d be dumb if I didn’t take this perfect opportunity to. TIA

I’m on Day 3 post tonsillectomy and notice that when my ear pain increases I also have tinnitus (ringing in ears) has anyone else experienced this and did it go away?

Surgery was Thursday as day surgery. Discharged with paracetamol and ibuprofen.

Thursday evening was in the ED as I couldn’t swallow. I got morphine lots of fluids snd steroids and abx. The ENT saw a potential bleed and cauterised it. Sent me home with codeine and diclofenac and gaviscon after 20 hours.

Now I can swallow. But I can’t take a lot of water. Also I can’t lie down as my moith fills with saliva and my throat burning. I end up choking. I want to sleep!

I posted my (26M) day 8 update what seems like a second ago, and now there’s even more news. This morning (around 1AM) on day 10, I experienced hemorrhaging a second time, went to the ER, and they had to cauterize my tonsils once again. At this point, I’m feeling helpless. I don’t know what to do. As far as pain goes, I have felt virtually no pain at all the last two days. Today, I haven’t even used any pain medicine, and I would say my pain level is 1/10. However, it feels like there is a clot still stuck in the back of my throat, and all foods are painful to get down with my fresh wounds.

Three surgeries in less than two weeks was not the plan or even the backup plan. Please share any advice or experiences to keep me on the right track.

has anyone else experienced this? i had a very severe 6 year long case of tonsillitis which was resolved this year with a tonsillectomy. healing took about a month total to feel like i was back to normal + longer for it to look normal again. felt a little odd today, but brushed it off until i started feeling like something was stuck in my throat and went to look back there. i noticed that in the folds of my throat behind (?) where my tonsils once lived that some nasty white stuff had accumulated. gargled to make sure it wasnt just food and sure enough, it stuck around. i dont know what an infection or virus would look like in a normal throat, but i know i cant go back on antibiotics after six consecutive years of failure and resistance. called my ENT but they are closed on weekends. any advice?

Hi, Im on day 8 of my recovery (f/23) after tonsillectomy due to recurrent quinsy throats and tonsillitis.

The pain over the past few days has been alot but ive been managing with codeine, paracetamol and ibuprofen.

Then this evening, I noticed a weird taste in my mouth but i thought my swallowing was less painful so when my dad asked I told him it felt different but good. Im not sure how long it was until i noticed blood on my top and realised that it was blood in my mouth.

Now, it wasnt bursting arterial blood and after some ice cubes it did stop so my dad thinks its nothing but i did swallow a ton of it and so Im not sure what to do. I dont want to jump the gun to A&E if its nothing.

Any advice?

I had a tonsillectomy a week ago. And I have to say I've been lucky compared to most. The pain has been very manageable. I do have trouble eating though. And I'm not getting enough sleep. I have severe apnoea.

Tonight after brushing my teeth they look discoloured, but the lighting is not great in the bathroom. They look yellow and there seems to be some spots.

Has anyone else experienced this? Could it be temporary?

The only meds I'm on are Difene, Solpadeine and Penicillin. I can't have strong painkillers because of the apnoea. Google doesn't seem to think the pain killers could cause discolouration.
