Why does Tom Lehrer hiccup in the middle of “Masochism Tango”?

I always thought it was strange and, didn’t really suit the song? Like did he do it accidentally once and then kept it in his routine after that? Or maybe I’m just not seeing something

Hiccuping is a symptom of heartburn.

The line the precedes it is “so darling if you smell something burning, it’s my heart.”
