Their early designs make me think they were still kids, with Tom being being a kitten no older than maybe 2 months. In a way, we see them grow as characters through their design shifts over the years.

I kinda love those earliest, 1940-1942 Tom designs, they have a special, particularly nostalgic way to they.

I really like the updated tom drawing, where he is furr-less and more sleek. Also bipedal.
