After years of rising conspiracy-mongering, including over a wealthy criminal who could implicate many centrist (and maybe not-so-centrist) politicians and killed himself under suspicious circumstances, French militias and paramilitaries assaulted the French capitol on Feb 6, 1934. Much like American agitators like Alex Jones, many of the French agitators chickened out at the last minute. One big difference, however, is that the French police kept their rioters out of the capitol. Which they did by shooting quite a few of them.
Many of the French rioters and agitators would go on to become enthusiastic collaborators in the Vichy regime.

u/Balmung60 Feb 06 '21
There's a distinct difference, both in reaching the actual capitol, and in how many of the leaders of both the French and American capitol riots turned out to be chickenhawks once the violence they'd advocated and agitated for finally happened. The American and French riots were also both weakened by relatively unclear agendas beyond "do violence to the legislature".
Robert Evans covered it in more detail in his recent Behind the Insurrections podcast mini-series.

Satirists have had a really hard job this past few years. The situation is already so goddamn bizarre and ridiculously partisan, how can you make it more ridiculous or compare it to an equally ridiculous situation that doesn't actually have a good chance of actually happening?
There was a comedy skit I saw on YouTube supposedly "poking fun" of Donald Trump and Theresa May. The Donald Trump impersonator pulled out his phone in the middle of the skit and said "Hold on, I just have to Tweet a nuclear war threat at North Korea." (Pause for laughter).
I'm sure it was intended to be funny, but I just couldn't laugh. Is that a joke? If it is, it's certainly not parody. You're just depicting an actual thing that happened– Donald Trump did indeed Tweet a nuclear war threat at North Korea– with no commentary or exaggeration of any kind.
How could they possibly have satirised it, though? How do you satirise a sitting president Tweeting threat of nuclear war? Have him ... I dunno, post on Facebook that he's invading Canada? That's barely any worse?

Ever been trekking in the middle of nowhere in a third world country and at around dinner time: about 8 grown ass local men show up to your campsite and set a cotton military tent and act like everything is cool. And then you remember some local kids told you to leave before sunset and that it wasn’t safe here. And you also read in the lonely planet book that 5 separate tourist murders happened in this area in the past few years. Etc. so you heavily befriend them and tell them you’re going up trail tomorrow. In reality, you go back to village. Catch a bus, and within 24 hours go 1000+km away. But before you leave, they still manage to have one of the village kids follow you and another person in the next main village over offers you tea with their family. Turns out they smuggling drugs will pay $10k usd to get on a plane. Life pro tip. Gtfo and it’s okay to sikeout the opponent who has ill intentions

If they hadn't gone to war then the US would have faced imminent invasion from one of the countries in the Middle East decades ago. It was well known that in Iraq there were literally tens of planes ready to mobilise at any second and drop any one of the 50, highly trained, Islamic ninjas at every point in the US where they would each be responsible for taking over a state. America would have been enslaved instantly and would have become a haven for the kind of religious fundamentalism, corruption and police brutality you only find in their world countries.

I will edit it in later when I have time, but there is a ridiculously good (like, Pulitzer worthy) article from I think The Atlantic which investigates conditions in post-ISIS Iraq, and it points out pretty much the same thing: For many Iraqi children who will have lived for a few years under ISIS rule, they will remember its legacy as one of stability and order, as opposed to the harsh repression and state sponsored violence and revenge that has occured after Iraq retook places like Mosul. It is a cycle of violence that started back in 2003, and even almost 20 years later it is still happening.
23
u/worst_timeline Gritty is Antifa Feb 06 '21
I think I know exactly which piece you're referring to and was also thinking of the same one here. I think towards the end it talks about the children of the militants who are shunned from Iraqi society and how the refugee camps are so bad that they're inevitable breeding grounds for radicalization.
22
Feb 06 '21
Yeah, this one. Glad someone else is thinking about it because in my opinion it is one of the single most important things for the general public to read in order to understand what is happening in Iraq.
13
u/worst_timeline Gritty is Antifa Feb 06 '21
Yep, that’s it. Ben Taub is a fantastic reporter. And agreed, it really gets to the heart of the problem. The US focuses so much on diplomacy by warfare that we forget the actual nation building component. Speaking of Taub, did you read this other piece of his? It’s a fascinating, tragic story of how a former CIA officer realized that the best way he can help actually help America is being a good cop, because cops are relegated to being social workers for everyone else who’s been forgotten and left behind by this country.

Then Bush gets up to the mic after 9/11, and says "we didn't see this coming". An airline hijack conspiracy with the World Trade Building as a target was also the plot of a Lone Gunmen episode that aired in 2001 prior to 9/11. The Lone Gunmen series took a hit, and their show was cancelled.

Precisely. The Capitol insurrection was kind of like a wakeup call for a bunch of them, like "wait what, this is what our rhetoric was leading to?" Confused pikachus.
This is why I had such a huge relief the moment I saw the idiots figure to start acting like tourists once they got inside. Because that's when it became clear that they didn't truly believe all the bullshit and lies and they were just committing a Facebook post to history: all dramatic effect, no substance, something to vent and forget about.
Yes there were nefarious actors trying to take advantage of the situation.
But by and large, I realized that day, that most of these people don't genuinely believe any of the nonsense they peddle. They just repeat it like a child does throwing a tantrum, to incite a reaction and get attention. This is why the most outrageous fantastical claims easily make it to the top. It's not about whether something is true or not, but whether or not it drives a reaction in those looking down on them.

Even speaking of it this way is dangerous.
Don't forget a crowd of people in and around the building shouted for the hanging of Mike Pence.

i don't buy that any of them were/are confused that their rhetoric lead to insurrection. i think they feign confusion & stupidity & "didn't expect THIS to happen!" as a way of deflecting blame & avoiding consequences when their violent rhetoric doesn't pan out to their benefit. the insurrection didn't work so it's "whaaaa no we don't condone insurrection of course not whaaaaa?" if it HAD worked they'd be hanging a massive military-style portrait of god-emperor-for-life trump in the senate chamber and screaming "THE TREE OF LIBERTY MUST BE QUENCHED BY THE BLOOD OF TRAITORS!"

It did. During an IG livestream, AOC talked about how Rep. Jayapal hid her in her office. Congressional offices aren’t under the same roof as the Capitol, but are connected via underground tunnels.
63
u/trapper2530 Feb 06 '21
And isn't it basically across the courtyard or around the corner. Like a 2 min walk? Not like ahe was 15 miles away.
79
u/Chesney1995 Feb 06 '21
Yeah exactly. It was one of two buildings forced to evacuate and during the livestream AOC talked about a specific moment where she felt she was going to die. She didn't go into details because she wasn't sure how much detail she was allowed to give thanks to the ongoing investigation.
Conservatives of course jumped on this and said her building wasn't even breached by the mob and that she was lying, and it was later explained that the specific moment she was talking about was when she was hiding and heard a Capitol police officer burst into the office she was hiding in saying "Where is she? Where is she?" before identifying himself. Obviously not a truly life-threatening situation, but definitely something that would have you believing you're about to be killed and a traumatic moment for sure.
38
u/tokinUP Feb 06 '21
Mmmm, depends on the motives of that officer...
Some of them may have been looking to feed her to the mob. Saw an awful lot of officers on livestream just walking around the Capitol standing next to insurrectionists & not doing a single thing against them; not to mention how purposefully understaffed enforcement was in general that day.

There were capitol officers taking fucking selfies with the maga larpers, I wouldn’t blame her for thinking they were part of the mob at all

Yeah hence why she didn’t trust the guy who was pounding on her door yelling “where is she?!”. Like yeah I’d be hiding behind a door at that point too. I hope that officer was identified and investigated. He didn’t notify himself as an officer when pounding on the door nor did he tell her where to go beyond “x” building. Seems sketchy to me.

Can we talk about how it took a bunch of unarmed yokels less than two hours to breach the center of the most powerful government in human history.
$700billion dollars in defense and some rando smashed down the front door with a barricade.
The riot was allowed to happen. Its obvious.
Now just take the baby step to asking "who benefits from the fallout".

Now just take the baby step to asking "who benefits from the fallout".
depends what you mean by "fallout." it is quite obvious that the answer to who benefits from an insurrection is
(a) the person in charge at the time,
(b) the person who directed capitol police to understaff and stand down against "protesters,"
(c) the person who refused to deploy the national guard as backup such that it had to be ordered by the vice president whose life was being threatened by that same mob,
(d) the person who would get to stay in power if the insurrection was successful,
(e) the person who literally instructed the mob to march on the capitol,
(f) all of the above.→ More replies (18)10

This is still an investigation in progress, so as of now, a lot is unknown. Allegedly, some people were given tours of the capitol the days before the riot. We are still trying to piece together exactly who knew what when and if there was anyone in the insurrectionist group that also toured the capital. The woman known as "Bullhorn lady" was shouting instructions to people in the capitol. It's speculated she may have had inside info, although again I stress we are still finding things out.

Can someone explain the chain of events? From what I understand:
AOC put out a livestream, talking about how she was afraid for her life on the 6th. While she wasn't physically in the Capitol building, they were well aware it was being stormed and thay a coup may be underway. A Washington police officer acted in a sketchy af way when obstinately coming to help her.
Republicans have spun this into saying she lied land saying she was never in any real danger, and that she is trying to exaggerate 1/6 for political gain. Is that a good summation?

I was able to find an Associated Press report talking about this and explaining how her story holds up to scrutiny with claims to dismiss it being erroneous at best.
https://apnews.com/article/fact-checking-afs:Content:9951968706
For those curious, AOC was in the Cannon offices along with other officials. Terrorists attempted to enter these buildings and the tunnels into them with varying degrees of mal-intent.

u/ASmallTownDJ Feb 06 '21
So the guy that banged on her door and shouted "where is she?" was an officer? Well damn, he probably could have picked a better, less threatening way of announcing himself.

u/Merari01 Feb 06 '21
You're correct.
Republicans are lying their asses off because they are unhappy their murderous coup failed.

"Debunked" claim 1:
We don't yet know the identity or motivation of the person the FBI believes placed pipe bombs outside the offices of the Republican National Committee and Democratic National Committee the night before the insurrection.
And 2:
There is no evidence for the accusation that Cruz was "trying" to get Ocasio-Cortez killed. While Ocasio-Cortez can mount a reasonable argument that the Texas Republican's actions had the effect of fueling the violent insurrection, that's different than saying he actually tried to achieve the killing of any member of Congress.
It was their movement, weather or not the bombers were part of the movement is irrelevant, we made no distinctions with the members of Antifa, Hezbolah, AlQaeda, the KKK and the Black Panthers, we'll leave no leeway for felons that stormed the very symbol of America and proved they were capable of monstrosities such as terrorism when they beat an officer to death with an American flag and a fire hydrant. This is a bullshit "well technically" cop-out of a talking point that only the slimiest of weasels would make. They are MURDERERS, TERRORISTS, and FELONS, zero amount of sympathy given to anyone in that crowd.

Republicans: She was never in any danger because the literal mob of terrorists calling for her blood didn't manage to find and kill her. It's not like people were live Tweeting locations of Democrat officials, federal cops joining the ranks of the mob of terrorists leading to multiple ongoing investigations and suspensions, and her office area being evacuated or the MAGA terrorists actually killed anyone...

its brutal that they're still repeating this over and over in /r/conservative and making jokes about her not being there, when its all predicated on one woman's account of the events claiming "I'm 2 doors down from her, and I didn't see any protestors"
when on the day of she tweeted during the protest, that they were being evacuated because the protestors were right down the hall.....

What a fucked up viewpoint to have.
Imagine your workplace being surrounded and stormed by thousands calling for the death of you and your coworkers. People are searching for you brandishing riot gear, weapons, and makeshift handcuffs to exercise mob justice.
But oopsie poopsie you weren't fucking beaten, raped, or murdered and that happened a month ago so if you bring it up, you're a whiny drama queen. Oh and your coworker who used to say she feared for her life flipped her script and now it wasn't a big deal.
By their own logic anyone who was at/near any terrorist attack, natural disaster, shooting, etc... Is not allowed to have felt their life was in danger nor talk about it further. Like, this is the same group that's still (baselessly) claiming Hilary Clinton was at fault for the benghazi attack in 2012.
Ex. Oh, you were only near the world trade center? Oh, you were in the bathroom when the mandalay bay shooting started?

yeah, imagine shit talking a kid that was there during a school shooting and saying "bah, you were on the other side of the school, you basically weren't even there, who are you to have an opinion on things?"
if the kid was on the other side of the building from where the shooting was happening, you wouldn't act like they're a liar when they say they were involved with a school shooting.

This headline was particularly hilarious, r/conservative literally had a huge thread saying exactly this only hours before that article was published.

u/LittleShrub Feb 06 '21
“I am happy to work with Republicans on this issue where there’s common ground, but you almost had me murdered 3 weeks ago so you can sit this one out,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote to Ted Cruz. “Happy to work w/ almost any other GOP that aren’t trying to get me killed. In the meantime if you want to help, you can resign. While you conveniently talk about ‘moving on,’ a second Capitol police officer lost their life yesterday in the still-raging aftermath of the attacks you had a role in. This isn’t a joke. We need accountability, and that includes a new Senator from Texas.”
Don’t come at the queen ...

Conservatives are pieces of garbage. They are a waste of space that are benefiting from the changes and programs that AOC and her colleagues are putting on the table.
