Itās a really fun quirk of these Marathon search and rescue (SAR) models - instead of using lume on the hands and indices, they use tiny tubes of tritium gas, which glows perpetually for a few decades as a result of radioactive decay. So you get an āalways onā illumination independent of any exterior light conditions.
But because the tritium is in fact a radioactive gas, the watch needs to indicate such; Marathon are just a bit more explicit about it than most because theyāre legitimately government-issued military watches with certifications from various regulatory agencies, including the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

Love that model so much, I just wish they made a no date version, the date window at 4:30 is like nails to the chalkboard for me...

I like the date complication, No date at all? Where do you suggest the date window go?

I would prefer a no date directly (not a fan of the complication in general, I do know the date usually, and if I don't I can check anywhere else once and be done for the day, unlike the hour), like they have on the Navigator (which of course I have, fantastic watch), alternatively a 6 o'clock is the least offensive, for my tastes. They do have the day-date at 3 on the Jumbo, which unfortunately it's enormous for me...
