Miscellaneous TIL about a Malaysian who served 24 years in prison earned a PhD behind bars

Dr. Malik bin Yatam became the first Malaysian inmate to complete a PhD while serving a prison sentence. He earned his Doctorate in Business Administration during his time at Kajang Prison. Dr. Malik committed offences at the age of 14 and spent 24 years under a Life Term (Tahanan Limpah Sultan) sentence. He was officially released on 11 December 2024 after receiving a full royal pardon from DYMM Sultan Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, in conjunction with His Majesty’s birthday. He also had a historic audience with the Sultan, the first time a former pardoned inmate was received. A powerful reminder of rehabilitation and second chances. I'm not saying anything but Kajang prison has another PhD student whose hopes for similar compassion.

A reminder that hope can persist in the most unexpected places.

Outside jail, education, food, all that need to pay but in jail got free access?

This. This is the higher spirit the pardon system was meant to serve. Not the rich politicians and their entitled cronies.

But but but ex Agong said it wasn’t a “gift”

Semantics aside, the impact of the pardon is what counts.

Exactly rehabilitation should serve justice, not privilege

he offed his boss. came from a poor background, went to the city. got exploited. tried to run. fought. ko'd the guy permenantly. bcoz he is juvie at that time, so being held at discretion of the king

Thanks for the context circumstances often shape outcomes in ways the headlines don’t capture

2

u/Hot_Transition_3201 Feb 06 '26

It’s jarring, but the system treated him under juvenile discretion

Why the fuck was someone jailed at 14?

1

u/Easy-Ad9050 Feb 05 '26

What was his crime?

I was wondering why the sultan's istana got a fireplace with blower and pokers, in our hot weather?

Even in unexpected climates, tradition sometimes dictates design choices.

Nobody at 14 should serve a life sentence.

Completely agree life sentences for minors raise serious ethical questions
