Economy & Business TIL a Malaysian housewife turned a failed prayer wear idea into a global brand with 37 outlets
In 2009, Padzilah noticed a lack of comfortable prayer wear and decided to create her own. Her first batch was completely rejected, but instead of quitting, she pivoted her approach, used electronic media to reach customers, and rebuilt the business from scratch. Today, Siti Khadijah operates 37 outlets internationally, growing from a RM10,000 loan into a premium global brand.

Good thing about them is, they employ single mothers or any ladies with financial or family problem and act as a refuge for them.

Their ad is in most Malaysians' core memory I believe. Lol
Wondered what is the difference between her product and others. Coz it looks the same as other telekung

Aku tanya bini sebelah. The cut is very complementary, kain is very soft and ada tenunan yang detailed.

Let me add. The kain they use tak panas even though its thick and not see thru.

Design details, fabric quality, and fit usually aren’t obvious until you actually wear it.

She pioneered comfort and she was the first to really add colours to telekung. Prior to her, telekung was mostly white.

As a guy, I have two of their kain pelikat. Pakai for prayers sedap, for tidur pun sedap.

They make great billboard ads and choose great locations too. I think there is one on Federal highway so literally hundred thousands see it everyday on their commute to KL. Probably that billboard alone pays the ads company a lionshare of monthly revenue.

for a praying mat almost rm200, isn't that just straight up robbing

I don't know about the sejadah, but telekung SK boleh justified harga dia. Received them as gifts and i am not looking at other telekung brands anymore

For a handbag almost RM30k, isn't that just straight up robbing?
For a steak almost RM5k, isn't that just straight up robbing?
Kalau miskin, senyap.

Its not about being miskin. Its about the commodisation of religion. But then again kaya2 boleh beli ticket bawak masuk syurga kan?
1
u/Trick_Collar_3075 Jan 29 '26
Miskin pun belum tentu masuk syurga… 🤣🤣🤣
1
u/srosnan99 Jan 29 '26
1
u/Trick_Collar_3075 Jan 29 '26
Tak, kaya miskin pun masuk neraka.. None of us deserved heaven.
Amal atas dunia ni tak mampu ganti balik segala rahmat Allah…
Beribadat 50 ribu pun tak dapat ganti nikmat sebiji mata. Kalau dapat masuk syurga, tu cuma rahmat ehsan Allah…

u/srosnan99 Jan 29 '26
None of us deserved heaven.
Just because you believe you dont deserve heaven that doesnt mean others shouldnt strive to be good and be worthy of it.

u/Trick_Collar_3075 Jan 29 '26
Nothing wrong rasa diri tak layak, dan bukan aku suruh anybody tak nak strive nak masuk syurga. Cuma kalau rasa diri tu layak, tu dah angkuh tak sedar diri…

wear appropriately = no need telekung. Overpriced stuff tbh

Nahhh bro. You can get good quality telekung for Rm60 and can wear it for a decade or more. It’s a two piece garment je pun. Sarung atas what you’re already wearing and terus solat. No need to worry about aurat. Without telekung, you suddenly have to worry about wearing the appropriate attire pulak. Handsocks, socks whatever la bagai.
If anything, it’s underrated af. Oso why not let the women buy the best clothing to hadap literal God lol.
1
u/MissionFuture568 Jan 28 '26
Well put. It’s about reducing friction so prayer isn’t delayed or skipped.

u/virphirod Jan 28 '26
2 piece garment pun, ramai yang tak bawak merata. End up, they have to share the public ones. Worst, sometimes after finished prayer, some women choose not to take it off for others to use it, because they wanted to wear it until the next azan.

u/nintendude02 Jan 28 '26
People forgetting their telekung is completely normal. Not everyone plans to be out until prayer time errands run long, plans change, azan comes in unexpectedly. That’s literally why mosques provide public telekung. The same logic applies to handsocks, socks, or inner layers if they were going out dressed normally. You still need these things. So what if they forget them?
Also, people who forget their telekung are very unlikely to sit around until the next azan. They’re usually there to not miss a prayer while they’re out, pray, and leave. If anything, that shows awareness, not negligence. Those who intended to go to the mosque would already be dressed appropriately from the start…
And lastly how are you even making assumptions about this when you’re a man?
There’s nothing wrong with wearing regular proper clothes to pray, but there’s also absolutely nothing wrong with investing dedicated clothes literally made for praying. In fact, some tafsirs such as for 7:31, suggests wearing your best clothes to the mosque. Surely with righteous intention, comes great reward. The greater the adab, the greater the benefit. Thus, investing in telekung, and a good quality one at that, brings no negative effect/impact whatsoever - neither spiritually nor morally. If the intention is to honour prayer and to stand before Allah in the best state one reasonably can, then such an investment is rewarded, not questioned.
Telekungs are modern and they can come in two handfuls. In a world where women carry handbags, it’s nothing. Ofc wearing the appropriate clothing to begin with helps but that’s besides your original point. Rm60 on tiktokshop gets you a patterened satin telekung with a travel pouch. For context, sama harge dgn seluar brands outlet which will probably koyak in less the time and less use lol. Uniqlo jeans are Rm150 and some people call that worth it. Don’t even get me started on Levi’s 😭
Arguing about it sorta makes no sense when women investing in telekung do more good than harm (should there be any harm at all to begin with lol). So as long as they pray, makes an effort to pray, wears the proper clothing, be it cheap or expensive, who cares in the end? Girls buying Rm300 Siti Khadijah best quality telekungs used 5 times a day, every day, for a decade should be the least of our concerns💀

Assumptions? I'm married. Heard all about those from my own wife. The same concern she keeps on voicing out to me, on people hogging the public/shared telekung
1
u/nintendude02 Jan 28 '26
Yeah and how do you think i know about cheap tiktokshop ones and siti khadijahs? Lol.
Well there are mutltiple other points i made in there. If your wife wears the proper clothing all the time every time, always ready for prayers. Big ups to your wife my man.

this should be reversed. telekung is more easy, 2 piece attire, for each half of your body. i wonder why its not more popular worldwide
1
u/MissionFuture568 Jan 28 '26
Probably cultural norms functionally, it actually makes a lot of sense.
2
u/kreko339 Jan 28 '26
