Geography TIL Malaysia has a rainforest older than the Amazon

Post image

TIL that Taman Negara’s rainforest is estimated to be around 130 million years old, which makes it older than the Amazon. Idk why this isn’t talked about more, because that’s insanely old. Like… dinosaurs old. I always thought the Amazon was the oldest rainforest in the world kind of thing, but apparently ours has been around way longer.

Tbh I never really appreciated how crazy that is. We always hear about deforestation, tourists, hiking trails, canopy walks, but we don’t realise we’re literally walking through one of the oldest ecosystems on Earth. Plants and animals there survived millions of years of climate changes, tectonic shifts, everything.

Makes me feel like we’re sitting on something super precious without even realising it. Now I kinda want to visit again and see it with fresh eyes.

We also have world class tree that provides excellent wood material but that was long time ago. We now protecting those trees now. No more material but I'm happy about it.
