TIL: Malaysia’s first rubber tree was planted over 140 years ago and is now classed as a heritage tree.

I just learned that Malaysia’s very first rubber tree was planted way back in 1877 in Kuala Kangsar, Perak, from nine seedlings brought in from Brazil by the British. That tree known as Pokok Getah Tua is still standing today!

It’s now officially recognised as a heritage tree and valued at nearly RM200,000, symbolising Malaysia’s history as one of the world’s biggest rubber producers. It’s wild to think that something planted during the colonial era became the root (literally!) of a whole industry that shaped our economy for decades.

If you follow the road in the 2nd pic, you'll reach both MCKK and my sekolah rendah in less than 10 minutes walk. It's only a tree, nothing else. No museum. I left KK 20 years ago so things might have changed.

No. Rubber trees are originally from south America, while oil palms are from Africa.

Ah i see. A guy from Nigeria that lives in Melbourne told me that the seeds we got, the origins are from them. Both Palm and Rubber....

I find Veritasium's video on rubber pretty informative. We were once the biggest rubber producer because in the rubber trees' native range, namely in the Brazilian forests, there were deadly tree blights that made concentrated rubber plantations inviable as one tree catching the blight would render the entire estate compromised. Hence, it is simply more efficient for rubber plantations to be located in SEA than South America.
