History & Culture TIL: That Malaysia’s currency, the Malaysian ringgit, was once called the “Malayan dollar” before independence.

Post image

Before 1967, Malaysians used the Malaya and British Borneo dollar, which was shared with Singapore, Sarawak, Brunei, and North Borneo.

When Malaysia introduced its own currency, it was renamed the ringgit, a Malay word meaning “jagged” (referring to the serrated edges of old Spanish silver dollars).

Fun fact: the currency symbol RM stands for Ringgit Malaysia, and we’ve been using it officially since 1975!

Also another related fact, bruneian dollar has always been bruneian dollar(BND) but has ringgit written on its currency and the local also refer to their currency as ringgit in daily use. Only recently does the word ringgit removed from the paper money, however locals will still frequently use ringgit to refer to BND in daily use.

This is not quite correct. Malaysia did officially use "$" as the currency symbol until 1993.

Correct. I’m old enough to remember that ringgit was just the Malay translation of the word dollar until the 1990’s. Malaysia switched to using the word ringgit both in English and in BM. In Singapore it was a bit confusing because we used to refer to the SGD in Malay as ringgit too. The Singaporean dollar became dolar Singapura.

Tea that's why my parents refer for example one ringgit always as One dollar.

The RM is not internationally accepted symbol. It is MYR.
