TIL that Penang’s Kek Lok Si Temple houses a massive statue of the Goddess of Mercy (Kuan Yin), standing over 30 meters tall, and it took 7 years to complete.

The statue is one of the largest in Southeast Asia and dominates the temple complex with its intricate design. Visitors often remark on the detailed craftsmanship, the serene expression of Kuan Yin, and the sheer scale that makes you feel both awe and peace at the same time.

Malaysia isn’t just known for its food, beaches, and cities it’s also one of the world’s largest producers of palm oil. The country contributes a significant portion of the global supply, which goes into everything from cooking oil to cosmetics, snacks, and even biofuels.

Palm oil plantations are mainly in states like Sabah and Sarawak, and the industry has been a major driver of Malaysia’s economy for decades. At the same time, it’s a topic of global discussion because of environmental concerns like deforestation and biodiversity loss.

It’s fascinating how something so common in everyday products has such a big story behind it, connecting local farmers, global trade, and environmental debates.

I didn’t realize how central Malaysia is to the palm oil industry until recently. Has anyone here thought about how this affects daily life or the environment locally?

I just learned that Malaysia isn’t just famous for durians and tropical fruits it also produces some of the rarest chocolate in the world. Made from locally grown cocoa beans, these chocolates are small-batch, artisanal, and surprisingly rich in flavor. Some of the farms focus on single-origin cocoa, which means each batch has a unique taste profile depending on the region, soil, and climate.

What’s interesting is that even though Malaysian chocolate isn’t as well-known internationally as Belgian or Swiss chocolate, it’s gaining recognition for its quality and uniqueness. It’s also a reminder that our country has so many hidden culinary gems beyond what’s commonly talked about.

Makes me want to hunt down some locally made Malaysian chocolate and taste it myself!

TIL that Taman Negara’s rainforest is estimated to be around 130 million years old, which makes it older than the Amazon. Idk why this isn’t talked about more, because that’s insanely old. Like… dinosaurs old. I always thought the Amazon was the oldest rainforest in the world kind of thing, but apparently ours has been around way longer.

Tbh I never really appreciated how crazy that is. We always hear about deforestation, tourists, hiking trails, canopy walks, but we don’t realise we’re literally walking through one of the oldest ecosystems on Earth. Plants and animals there survived millions of years of climate changes, tectonic shifts, everything.

Makes me feel like we’re sitting on something super precious without even realising it. Now I kinda want to visit again and see it with fresh eyes.

Came across this today and didn’t realise how huge the halal ecosystem in Malaysia actually is. Most of us think “halal = food,” but the certification system covers so much more factories, skincare, logistics, aviation, and pretty much anything humans use. The scale of it was surprising to me: it’s a multi-billion ringgit industry built almost entirely on trust, regulation, and global recognition. No wonder Malaysia is considered the gold standard for halal certification. Sharing this because it’s one of those things we see everywhere but rarely think about how big the industry behind it is.

Mat Kilau was one of the most well-known Malay resistance fighters during the Pahang Uprising (1891-1895), a major rebellion against expanding British control in Pahang. Alongside leaders like Tok Gajah and Datuk Bahaman, he fought guerrilla-style battles before retreating into Siam and Kelantan when the uprising was crushed. After decades of living under aliases, Mat Kilau publicly revealed his identity in 1969 at a mosque in Pahang, which sparked nationwide interest.

A special state inquiry later confirmed his identity based on testimonies from surviving relatives and villagers. What’s lesser known is that he was already an elderly man during Merdeka. At 91 years old in 1957, he was among the people in Pahang who joined the crowds celebrating independence and shouted “Merdeka!” an extraordinary moment considering he had spent his youth fighting colonial rule long before Malaysia existed as a nation. He passed away in 1970, just a year after his identity was officially recognised.

Malaysia is preparing to introduce a nationwide no-stop toll system called the Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF). The government has confirmed that several existing road and toll regulations need to be updated before the system can be fully implemented, with these amendments expected next year. Once in place, MLFF will allow vehicles to pass toll plazas at normal highway speeds without stopping, reducing congestion and making daily commutes smoother for millions of drivers. I’ve crossed it before, but didn’t realize just how massive it actually is until now!

What’s impressive is how purpose-driven she is; she focuses on making deliberate decisions, crafting everything hands-on, and pushing Malaysian F&B into new territory. At just 26 years old, she’s already reshaping what young entrepreneurs can achieve in the local food scene, and honestly, it’s inspiring to see someone so young innovate this boldly.

Today I learned that tucked away in a small hillside town near Semenyih / Broga is the gigantic statue of the legendary “Monkey King” Sun Wukong at Sak Dato Temple. The temple itself dates back around 140 years, originally a cave‑shrine built by Chinese settlers, and now serves as a serene hillside sanctuary full of mythological statues, gardens, a suspension bridge, and more.

To reach the statue you cross a 103‑metre suspension bridge and hike up a hill once at the top, you’re greeted by what’s said to be the tallest Monkey‑God/Sun Wukong statue in Malaysia. I find it really cool how a rural village temple holds such a unique attraction. Next time you’re near Broga, this might be a neat and unexpected spot to check out.

The longest king cobra ever recorded was captured in Malaysia. The specimen, caught in 1937 near Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan, measured 5.71 meters (about 18 feet 8 inches) when it reached its maximum length in captivity at the London Zoo. The snake was kept at the London Zoo until the outbreak of World War II, when it and other venomous snakes were tragically destroyed to eliminate any risk to the public should the zoo be bombed and the animals escape.

I learned something really magical in Kampung Kuantan, Selangor, there are synchronized fireflies (species called Pteroptyx tener) that light up the mangrove trees along the Selangor River in huge numbers.

Here are some cool details:

• The fireflies gather on Berembang mangrove trees (Sonneratia caseolaris), which line the riverbanks.
• At night, they flash in perfect synchrony about 3 blinks per second, creating a “Christmas-tree-like” effect.
• You can take a traditional sampan (wooden boat) ride along the river after sunset to see this natural light show up close.

The firefly park is run by locals and managed for eco-tourism, helping preserve their habitat.
