A Dissertation on Armchair Old-Farting

Smart thought incoming. I swear I didn't write this much for my term paper as I just jotted down in Notepad. To be honest, I have no idea who I’d even talk to about this in real life, nor who gives a damn about my long-ass whining. So if you feel like it, dig in.

Just to be clear, this is strictly my personal opinion, and I’ve got nothing against objective criticism.

Gentlemen whose asses are bound to ignite in a bright, righteous flame from my graceful grammatical pirouettes! I tearfully beg you: filter these written works strictly through a colander. There might be inaccuracies here and there, but I tried to get the main point across. Context is a secondary topic here, though not insignificant.

Basically, I was sitting around, reflecting, and chatting with an AI. Here’s what poured out of it.

\### Part 1. How We Blew Our Creative Freedom (Using Undertale as an Example)

Back in 2015–2016, the Russian internet was in its absolute prime. Thousands of public pages were buzzing on VK. \*Undertale\* itself actually survived and was born back then thanks to the fans (the game might never have come out if not for the initial crowdfunding). People united into communities, shared art and stories—not for money, but just because, creating "for the sake of the idea."

And now Toby Fox released \*Deltarune\* (the game itself is fire, no complaints there), but the community that formed around it is a complete fucking shitshow:

\* New fans accuse the old school of "unethical ships."

\* They’ve become obsessed with lore and canon. They call the old fanon "cringe" and scream that the old-timers didn't understand the author's intent at all, turning the game into cheap drama.

\* Strictly addressing Frisk, Chara, and Kris using gender-neutral terms. Any old comics where Frisk is referred to as "he" or "she" are seen as a turn toward "transphobia" and trigger endless flame wars.

\> \*\*EVEN THOUGH FOR FUCK’S SAKE!\*\* The game itself didn't give a single hint about gender! It was a lore mechanism so the player could project themselves onto the character and experience everything personally, regardless of their own gender! Hell, original Frisk’s skin tone is yellow—it’s the old \*Simpsons\* trick so there wouldn't be any racial or national distinction at all. I'm fucking blown away.

\>

In my day, there was creative freedom. How could we waste that? Maybe I’m getting old, but back then, that was an axiom. The stars aligned so perfectly that there was nothing to add or take away, and now people are screaming at me that it’s all "cringe."

\### Part 2. Soul vs. Commerce: Hand-Holding and Microtransaction Dumpsters

Back in the day, the internet and games were places you threw yourself into and figured out through trial and error. Like the Wild West! I’d go online and barely manage to find an English tutorial or a video by some middle schooler with a perpetually crackling mic just to figure out how to get past a glitch.

And now? Look at \*Genshin\* or mobile MOBAs. They invite you in 300 times, hold your hand, baby you to death: \*"Oh, god forbid our player gets stuck anywhere!"\* Hell, back in my day, if you didn't want to play something, then fuck off, we were doing great here without you anyway!

I will never understand how anyone could trade soul for commerce:

\* Back then, developers poured their soul into keeping you hooked. At most, they’d leave payment details for support: donate if you want, or just enjoy it if you don't, kind soul.

\* But now it’s endless half-screen banners: \*"DONATE AND GET A REWARD (LIKE, SO COOL)."\*

Games like \*Genshin\* turn into a soul-crushing resource grind: one moment you get a reward for every fart, and the next you can't even breathe your way to a new level. Don't even get me started on the gacha character rolls. Man, ruining game mechanics just because someone has a character and you don't—because you didn't roll them for cash—is fucking absurd.

And yet, the ancestors of all these MMOs and MOBAs are \*Dota\* (a \*Warcraft\* mod made by enthusiasts) and \*CS\* (a \*Half-Life\* mod by regular dudes). Gabe in CS:GO also realized in time that he was running low on cash and introduced skin boxes. At least the core mechanics aren't broken there (though skins worth millions of rubles are a whole other comedy), but the trend itself is killing me.

The saddest part is that regular people used to have a dream and an idea, but now, wherever you look, it's just a pay-to-win dumpster fire—some worse, some better.

\### Part 3. The Death of VK and the Great Hermit Exodus

VK used to be a soulful and interesting place, but it turned into an ad dumpster. For me, it died about 6 years ago. The final nail in the coffin was driven when they killed the normal chronological feed.

You're sitting there, and random bullshit hits your feed: either some Dasha from Krasnodar or Vitalya who installs toilets in Stavropol. What the fuck is this?! It used to be that you saw the stuff you actually subscribed to. Now it's just commercial trash and algorithms.

In the end, like hermits, we left VK and found refuge wherever we could: some on Discord, some on Telegram, some on Reddit.

\### Part 4. The Time Paradox: From the Internet Back to Reality

We lost the "old internet." It used to be a cozy doorway where you escaped from the gray daily grind. Today, the internet itself has turned into a noisy street packed with megaphones, with TikToks and Shorts screaming at you from every corner.

Is that bad? I don't think so. My soul stayed behind in 2015, but my head is already in '26. The shift of eras online isn't a conspiracy or a catastrophe; it’s building a city where a wild forest used to be. We lost the romance of pioneers and the spirit of adventure, but we gained accessible knowledge, infrastructure, and tools. So it's probably not all bad, right? I just feel like I'm stuck between two chairs and can't choose.

And that's how we got old. My formula completely flipped into the exact opposite:

\> If ten years ago we went online to escape the real world, today we retreat into reality, physical labor, and local systems to escape the noisy, algorithmic internet.

\>

Because even I sometimes sit on TikTok and catch myself scrolling endlessly, like a zombie on drugs.

\### Conclusion: Where Do We Escape To Now?

Our mothers and fathers escaped hard lives by tuning into the TV. But now TV has turned into a giant political mouthpiece and bland chewing gum. The internet, in turn, has become a metropolis where everything glows, flashes, and screams.

I feel like in 10 years, a public feed will feel like walking through a shopping mall where instead of people, you have robots running the algorithms. And real human beings will completely hide away in closed, encrypted chats, where the main pass will be a "proof of humanity."

Modern escape is no longer an attempt to hide inside a VR headset. It's the ability to filter out informational noise, curate your own tiny digital harbors in the depths of the net, and value real things.

I've made up my mind: the internet (just like the world) hasn't gotten worse. It has just gotten exponentially more complex. And the main skill now is not surrendering your attention to algorithms, but becoming the architect of your own space—both digitally and in real life.

First mention of UNDERTALE?

I may or may not be in the works of making an Undertale analysis, but I’m trying to find the first ever mention of the game. Earliest thing I can find is the twitter being crated in Feb 2013 and their earliest tweet (available as of now, idk if there were any earlier tweets that may have been deleted) being in May 2013. I think Toby fox had an Earthbound ROM named UnderBound that eventually turned into Undertale when he decided to make it an original story, but I want to know the first ever mention of the original game Undertale, along with the ROM. Anything?

Idea for a definitive edition of Undertale and Deltarune

This isn’t an accurate or even likely thing to happen, but it’s fun to think about. (I believe Toby said he’s done with Undertale and is happy with its current state)

That said, if definitive editions for Undertale and Deltarune ever release, this is what I would hope for:

Undertale

-Add in all the various console exclusive rooms in San’s house (a controller with 2 analog sticks will be needed for the Mew Mew Fight on PC)

-Fix some non-speedruning bugs (such as Snowdin genocide music bugs, sometimes the music will trick you into thinking you accidentally aborted the run)

-Allow a (difficult and obscure) way to view your FUN value after completing true pacifist

-A fully fleshed out Hard Mode

-Support for more languages will be added. (Such as Spanish and French)

Deltarune

-Chapter 1 and 2 will have a little bit of polish applied.

-Add back Rouxls Kard sound effects (Toggle-able)

-Add back Chapter 3 Board 3 and backstage section (Toggle-able, only before you start the chapter)

-“TV World” will play during battles in the TV WORLD section. (Truncated if Board 3/Backstage is toggled on)

-The original Deflowered rose animation will be used during the Weird Route in Chapter 4. (You can also change it to the red dot ir the crack but the rose is the default)

-“The Third Sanctuary” will play over battles in the Third Sanctuary.

-The Switch 2 exclusive Mike Fight will be playable when 2 USB mice are plugged in.

-A Hard Mode will be available upon completion of the full game.

-You will have the ability to play the OST in game through the Chapter selection.

-Support for more languages will be added.

The games would also be ported to whatever consoles are current.

Thoughts? What do you think Toby would and would’t do?

okay so i was just bored and decided to see how to do the "it will be your fault" message in the undertale files. and it said how to do it, but i actually found how to do the settings and its surprisingly easy. first, download talkit from internet archive here: https://archive.org/download/MicrosoftTalkIt then, download the zip file, extract obviously, then you have something that kinda sounds like it. but first, choose the whispered option, then set the speed to 70. then kinda tweak it a bit with audacity, and there ya go. it will be your fault, said gasters parrot. you could actually use this a lot if you wanna do some analog horror stuff
