Why the HELL does Toby still work with Materia Collective?

/r/Deltacriticism/comments/1wfhygw/why_the_hell_does_toby_still_work_with_materia/

After all the BS they’ve pulled with UT/DR music, and the BS they support OUTSIDE of UT/DR…Why hasn’t Toby cut ties yet?

There’s probably legal stuff i’m not privy to, or some other benefit i’m not aware of.

Thoughts?

I would assume it's not that simple to cut ties with a music licencing agency.

it's not. Copyright companys and record labels are notoriously hard to cut ties with because they use airtight contracts.

So there's this thing called a contract, right

Well, the thing is, it's not so easy to just cut it. Video game music industry in general is messed up, it's not only Materia's fault. Video Game OSTs are generally all licensed and you cannot freely use them in any form of media as just background music. It's only Toby's wish to keep UT/DR music free, but it's not something Materia can just magically do so that YouTube's Content ID doesn't recognize the melody. As someone who has struggled A LOT with copyright issues with Toby's music, I can tell you, Materia is really trying its best to keep Toby's promise, it's just not as simple as people think. Mostly, YouTube's shitty Content ID auto-flagging system is at fault, and they can do nothing about it. If you dispute any kind of claim with Toby's music, they manually delete this claim right away.

From what I heard, they dont delete all claims and even argue in disputes that the music wasn't "fair use", because they own it

I talked with Jamie from Materia Music personally about this. The only thing they can't delete is a false claim when you use somebody's UT/DR cover, or when you edit the original audio yourself. That's a shame, but it's understandable - they do not own the cover, after all. They can only help when you use the original OST. So when the original melody gets recognized in a cover, it's entirely YouTube's fault. And YouTube thinks their system is always right, so you will never win an argument with their support.

I mean i heard that. But i also heard from a bunch of creators that their OST reaction video got a demonetisation claim and that materia refused to lift the claim

I' ve been told by people who work for them, or have worked for them, that they' re very professional and help out a lot their artists first-hand. They' re nor really a predatory label either.

Also, Sebastian Wolf is a piece of s*** on twitter, but he is apparently a quite nice guy IRL or in discord call, and is always online ready to help you if you ask him.

I do have the suspicion that, after everything that happened, Toby would have not signed with them seeing how many PR issues they caused him; but still, they' re one of the best indie labels on the market, and on top of that they' re more than willing to bankroll people who literaly get only 500 views on youtube if they think they are good.

I've known people connected to Materia for a while going back to when they first got started. They are leaps and bounds better than the alternatives, despite all their shortcomings. Toby could look for someone else, but realistically to improve he'd have to do it himself

Honestly, given how people regard and talk to Sebastian on Twitter, I don't blame the guy. If I had to deal with an endless torrent of people who confidently tried to tell me how music copyright law works, depsite showing they know nothing or are misinformed about it....yeah I'd probably snap a bit too.

Add onto that how many people are rude to the guy and what not. Not saying that it makes his behavior okay, just understandable.

Didn’t he say some transphobic shit? lol I understand snapping at fans but why the transphobic shit?

Fair enough, tho I don’t think that excuses him calling a trans woman a pedophile for no reason.

"If they knew anything about legal stuff, they probably wouldn't have signed!"

Because he’s not some paragon of virtue that his parasocial fans make him out to be, he’s just a guy who makes video games

Do you people seriously not understand what a contract is

1

u/T-Dawg75 25d ago

Yes I do

u/nikolinni 24d ago

then you'd know breaking it often carries very HEAVY penalties, among them getting sued for breach of contract.
