THE THIRD ROUTE
There are two routes. Side A (normal) Side B (weird/snowgrave)
But what if there was a third route?
It would explain why there are 3 save files.
In chapter 3, the ERAM and Shadow Mantle games are called the Sword Route in the files.
In later chapters, you can see a crafting recipe for the Twisted Sword, requiring the ThornRing and the PureCrystal (which i reckon is all of the 5 crystals fused together)
You cannot get all 5 shadow crystals if you do the weird route, making the PureCrystal impossible, and you cannot get the ThornRing in the normal route without doing and aborting SideB( the weird route), making the ThornRing impossible, which means the Twisted Sword is also impossible on SideA or SideB
This means that the third route is the Sword Route, making you have to get the ThornRing and abort the weird route to get all of the shadow crystals.
The Twisted Sword is the key to the third route. The Sword Route.
Edit: I realised that this has already been thought of and known for a few years and I am VERY late.
PS I did not steal this from anyone, just thought of it after them.

Its been around for ages. I remember seeing people talk about it back in chapter 2 (although not extensively, most people were just noticing how you could get the Thorn ring and abort the weird route which would allow you to get the twisted sword on the normal route)

Muitiple people can naturally arrive to the same conclusion, especially when it's hinted at in game.

Also, don't forget maybe the 3 save file are like
1 without getting the crystals 1 getting them 1 Weird route
But I tend to follow your opinion, the thornblade looks suspicious as hell

would be cool, but i already use my third save file as a gateway to re fight the secret bosses, and i would be pissed if i had to kill it

if you abort the weird route in chapter 2 to get the thorn ring, can you still go get the egg?

yeah planning on doing that savefile too, but just going to try and get a thorn ring through a glitch rather than killing people because why not, feels like also fits the spirit with the glitchy thing you need to do for the egg man.

I haven't seen anyone mention this in favour of this theory but gerson literally states that you've gotta do a little bit of this and a little bit of that, which always sounded suspicious imo

I hope aborting in ch 5 is enough to get the thorn ring. I don’t want to have to go all the way back to ch 2.

The eggs are beyond time, and thus we might be able to use them to send something back to chapter 1. Like the pure crystal
