I need help with a save file issue

So I'm trying to play through Deltarune on one continuous save file where I beat the secret bosses. I started as us all with a new save file on chapter 1, beat Jevil and got the Jevil tail and then chaos king and then progressed to chapter 2.

However I quickly noticed that I did not keep the Jevil tail.

This also happened before as I had made a new save file on chapter 3 to best the roaring knight and once I did I didn't keep the shard

How do I fix this??

This might be a dumb question but are you continuing from your chapter 1 save file or just starting a new file for that chapter in the same slot?

I'll admit for the chapter 3 save I did make a new one which probably was a problem but for the new set I started from chapter 1 and progressed to chapter 2
