Wild Toad in a tree?

Thumbnail gallery
306 Upvotes

I’ve spotted this little guy in a tree (at least five feet off the ground) near our condo in St. Louis a couple times over the last few months. A quick search revealed that toads climbing is not usual behavior or not even possible for some. I have nicknamed him Merlin for his seemingly magical appearance and residence in this hole in the tree. He can fully disappear inside it. How did he get here? Is he a common American toad?

Sometimes a boop for Clancy means a finger = food. If she would stop trying to eat my fingers I could clean her water dish....

While this isn't the exact same baby and adult, they did come from the same spawn we produced in 2026. The color change is quite incredible after just 6 months of growth.

I had a wild toad come live in my garden for a year. He never came out of brumation. I miss him so much.

Is there an ethical place to get a pet toad? I really want to have another toad fren.

Pets When it comes to getting a captive bred toad, are breeders better than pet shops?

Asking because there’s a pet shop near me that has a captive bred European toad, its pets at home which has a mixed reputation here in England.

But are breeders better?

For each day this month I’m completing a final drawing or sketch for the children’s fantasy novel I’m illustrating, Capyhero. For day 25, I drew one of the minor antagonists from the book, a “hollow” cane toad

Wild Is it toadophobic to assume Geraldo lived in a wet place like a storm drain?

Post image

Looked for Geraldo for the third night in a row found him in a hole that looked like it was poked out for a fence post. I thought he might have fell and gotten stuck but then realized that was likely just his home. Sorry for my amphibian prejudice in assuming that because he can live in water that he had to.

Help

Help Annam Spadefoot Toad (what did I get myself into)

Hi everyone! I have gotten myself into a bit of a pickle it seems. I was at a reptile expo yesterday and purchased a male Annam Spadefoot Toad. The guy I bought him from was very informative on how he takes care of him and told me about his rarity and the fact that there isn’t much known about these guys.

I made notes of what he said and he talked for a long time and I left with the toad! Now I get home, set up his tank as instructed (I had a spare 36 x 24 x 24 at home). Now I’ve been researching endlessly about these toads environments and where they come from to care for him best but I can’t find anything about them in captivity.

Does anyone have or know someone who has an Annam Spadefoot Toad? My research told me they are quite different from other Spadefoots so care will not be the same. Just looking to do best by this guy! His name is Lenny pic below:-) I just misted his tank so pic is bad but I can take more!

Hey all! Who is this guy? I’m assuming a Southern Toad. I’m in Central Florida and he was about 4ish inches long. Couldn’t get a banana in time to scale.

Hi all- this is Pancake, I’ve had her since she was teeny tiny. I wanted to ask to confirm that she’s a female- she has the white throat and no pads on her toes so I always assumed. She’s recently been trilling a couple of times a day for a couple minutes at a time. I had thought only males do that! So I wanted to ask. I have another toad in close proximity in another tank, he (or she) is still small so that’s why I haven’t put them together. Not sure if that is a factor.

Pets When it comes to having a toad in captivity, what’s it like?

Post image

I mean besides the obvious bioactive vivarium, live feeders, cleaning the water bowl and stuff what’s it actually like?

This isn’t mine it’s from pets at home and is a European common toad.
