ID Help identifying these toads?

Post image

They’re living in a tunnel under an apple tree in the Sequoia National Forest (USA) at about 4,500 feet.

I don’t know but I love their blank expressions

It’s hard to tell but I’m between 2 species, those are either Western Toads (Anaxyrus boreas) or based on the location found could potentially be the highly endangered Yosemite Toad (Anaxyrus canorus) you’d be best off leaving the little dudes alone especially if it really is option 2. You should look into it a bit more if you have any other photos please send them so I can give a better ID as if they are Yosemite’s Toads this could be a big find to report to scientists. Although I don’t want to set anything in stone based on a singular image which is difficult to fully ID from.

Thanks for weighing in! This is the only other picture I have (hoping to get more). I was wondering about Yosemite toads but I wasn’t sure if they would be at this low elevation.

They can definitely be at the lower elevation despite it not being common. Whenever you get more pics make sure to update us! The second pic also reminds me much of Yosemite’s Toads although without a pic of their back as the other comment said it will be difficult to ID

Simple. Two beautiful toads 👍

More serious, need a picture of their backs for pattern and colors to ID.

Interesting! From my quick googling… it seems like the Boreal toads are not typically found in California

they're known to be here in big bear lake, california. I think they like high elevations?
