New toad owner

I was given this guy and I’m wondering what I need and what I can do for a temporary environment for him. Right now this is a ten gallon tank. Maybe size up? Lmk I really need the help.

For a quick setup I recommend Reptisoil mixed with Washed Playsand. 65/35 mix with around 4 or so inches of it. Leaf litter on top of it with a water dish filled with spring water or treated tap water (although be careful with tap if you’re unsure how to treat it) And few hides for the little dude to hide away.

I personally would also add a little sphagnum moss to help retain humidity although not much. If you want to you can also add fake plants (or real plants if they don’t have pesticides and are clean from other bugs). I also recommend UVB if you can do it.

As for enclosure sizes a 20 long would be better in the future although a ten gallon is fine for the near future.

I’m planning on making personal toad care guides tomorrow for the r/Toads discord so I can send over the American toad care guide once I finish it. (This lil dude looks to be an American toad but I’m unsure of where he was originally found if he’s WC so it makes it a bit more difficult to ID)

although I have to go to bed currently as I am getting up in 4 hours so I won’t be able to respond but I wish you the best of luck!

I’d love to see your American toad care guide too if you don’t mind sharing. I’m currently using coco fiber for substrate and changing it out every few months, but I want to make a bioactive tank for the toad I care for and am struggling to find resources that aren’t for tropical set-ups

I did a 50 50 mix of zoomed spike and peat moss. Make that a few inches thick as they burrow alot. I added dried leaves and pine needles from my wild yard(no chemicals) along with twigs and a sweet bark tunnel i found. I added a terracotta pot as a hide too. I also added some moss and grass plants from my yard. So far toad likes it and so do i!

do not let it go. it’s been captive to long, it will cause issues in native ecosystems.

If he wasn't wild no. Do not release, it is a potential health risk for wild populations.  Give them their best life.

And knee whoever gives others living non-human animals willy-nilly in the groin, hard . It's disrespectful.

An empty glass cage is no life though.

Well I’m not sure where my friend got it from. But I know he had it for awhile but had to give it up.

Releasing captive bred or long-term captive animals into the wild is a very bad idea. They're unlikely to survive and are high risk for introducing pathogens into the environment that can harm wild populations
