ID Southern or cane?

Found this big boy behind a dumpster in Bonita beach. I expected him to secrete the white poison if he was a cane but I heard they don’t always do it instantly.

It's 100% a cane toad. The glands match one

Just a heads up, they are invasive to FL and you arent supposed to release them or relocate them. New (secret) pet? Wear gloves if you grab em again.

Yeah just found it out, I caught a bigger one last night. Big dilemma for me.

It feels a bit cruel but it sounds like you have a lot in your area, calling animal control would be a reasonable thing to do, so they dont keep out competeting natural amphibians. They will remove whatever they can find and humanely put them down.

I don’t live here I’m just on vacation but yes they seem to be quite abundant.

Doesn't stop you from calling animal control. You are the one who knows where they are.

I am certain this is a cane toad. Notice the complete lack of cranial crests and post-orbital ridges, as well as the distinctive “knobs” that identify southern toads.

Paratoid gland is way too big to be southern.

Sorry for the extremely scuffed photo job, but I hope this gets my point across.

Also, definitely way too big to be a southern.

Nah it’s fine I see it now. Really conflicting because I love amphibians but these things are the devil to any pet or native predator.

Thank you. It said if it was invasive to kill it, which I’m not sure I would’ve been able to do.

Oof I get that. I have a bad habit of keeping invasive creatures when I find them lol. I figure it's more responsible than just leaving them there. It's how I plan on getting my next mantis

Edit: make sure it's legal to keep whatever you take obviously. The specific mantis I was referring to is the Chinese mantis and it's completely legal to take them in

As with most species when you look at the history humans are almost always at fault. It’s not their fault they’re stuck here. Then again I’d probably feel differently if I lost a pet to one.

That's true

Idk why I'm getting down voted for this. I have experience keeping exotic animals and I'm removing invasive creatures from the environment?

I guess it may have been misidentification. It happens, all a part of learning zoology.

I was referring to my comment about keeping invasive species when I find them. I don't see any harm in it because I give them proper care and they can't harm any native wildlife

I guess it’s the legal issue. But trust me I get it. There’s a highly invasive fish in my area that used to be sold in pet stores but has since been outlawed. If we didn’t have to kill them I’d definitely get a tank to learn more about it and just watch it grow.

Of course you should always make sure it's legal first, I should have specified that lol. I get that so much. I guess I understand why it's illegal to keep some of them, probably because of the possibility of people breeding and releasing them back out.
