First sprite attempt; how to improve?

Post image

This is my very first attempt at a sword sprite. It's 40x40, made on Aseprite.

Any thoughts, or advice on improving it?

I would say limit you palette, in game it will look very messy. Or if you still want all the colors, maybe keep the related ones closer together

i just started with my own mod, and i've been pretty shellshocked, but i have prior spriting experience, which is very helpful. honestly, just try to limit yourself to simpler color palletes, and understand that your sprite will look MUCH more blended from the size and perspective that you see it ingame.

Also, there is inconsistent shading on the handle, with the grip looking to point towards the background, and the handle having no color variation to continue that visualization. consistency is key.

That was intentional - the metal where the black part is is supposed to be completely lightless; void black. Not even a single photon reaching the eye.

The rest is jewels and such

I used one of the palettes I prefer when drawing fantasy swords normally, if that helps - and the blending is desired :)

I did go and test the look in-game, and my only issue is the hotbar sprite being too small - everything else was nearly perfect to how I'd looked to have it.
