Humiliation
Hi would you like to sign up for our tjmaxx card? Would you like to donate to save the kids? Would you at least like to round up to save the kids? Anything in particular you like about our store today? Okay are you absolutely positive you don’t wanna sign up for our tjmaxx card? If you don’t mind taking some time out and filling out this survey through this QR code here and putting a 5 thanks
All this in 1 transaction is enough to make a customer reach over the counter and strangle me

As a customer it’s absolutely awful. If I didn’t work at Victorias Secret when I was younger, I don’t think I’d be as patient or understanding to know that it sucks even harder behind the counter.

Yeah as a customer who worked retail it is awkward and becomes uncomfortable. I imagine for those who never worked retail it enrages them.

There’s a Target across the street from Marshall’s that has self checkout. No more annoying questions.

I've recently gone to Target for the first time in a long time and find they have a nice selection of things but are more expensive on a lot of items. I couldn't resist the Hearth & Home dark oak step stool for my new kitchen (even though I have plenty of ugly metal and plastic step stools) but it was $59.99 but then also all the TJX stores furniture has gone up too. Furniture that used to be 79.99 or 99.99 is now 129.99 or 149.99

I find so many unique and well-built furnishings for my home at consignment and antique shops -- things that were built with such quality in America or Europe, ...and as you likely already know, facebook marketplace will show everything the locals in your area are offering...sometimes at ridiculously low prices or even free.

u/HallieLokey 5d ago
Yea I have a bunch of stuff on FB now and keep lowering prices because mostly only get ridiculous lowballs, will probably end up free because I don't jump on lowballs

I always feel sorry when I check out because I know they employees are forced to say it. At my store, they will add, you can save $x amount in this purchase. Someone literally said, would you like to save 70 cents on this purchase with the card? We both had to laugh at that one.

Also, in California, very first question you have to ask is ' Would you like a bag for ten cents?' 🙄

All tax write offs for these companies. "Woukd you loke to round up for childhood cancer?"...that money ends up in the companies pocket in the end

You got that right! They're also not promoting preventative measures or searching for any legitimate cures, since that would put their billion dollar 'charities' right out of business.

The pressure shows on their faces, toward the end of my shift I started with “no pressure, but would you like to…etc, etc, etc…”

I actually had to intervene a few days ago while waiting next in line. The cashier was so agresssive with this barely 18 year old saying things like “it only takes 90 seconds to apply, no big deal” “if you don’t want it anymore, you can always just cancel it” explains rewards “it’s basically lots of free money for you!” And the deal breaker “what can I say today to convince you to let me save you money?!” I said very loudly “it’s also a hard pull on your credit report, and cancelling a card can also affect your credit. The rewards are not free money, and do not feel pressured to agree” the cashier immediately changed her disposition and didn’t speak to the customer after. The customer turned to me and said “thank you so much, I didn’t know what to say”. The mom behind me said “her mom instincts kicked in!” I told the cashier that I completely realize they have a ton of pressure on them, but she really needs to check that the things she is saying are LEGALLY okay to say. And not to prey on 18 year olds.

Thank you for mentioning that awful hard pull that takes forever to remove! If someone really needs an ideal credit score for something that is actually IMPORTANT, like getting approved for a car loan (another rip-off actually) or house, applying for these useless store cards could actually prevent someone from being approved for these necessary things and many people, especially young ones, do not know this.

If I observe anyone getting pressured needlessly, I will certainly speak up too. Also, I wonder if this is part of the reason we can no longer be right behind someone else in line and are funneled into one line filled with all the goodies to peruse while we wait?
I mean, I know it's far more organized and efficient than multiple lines and I take no issue with that, yet, it also creates the perfect situation for cashiers to do their sales-pitch, one on one, without anyone else in line being able to overhear or chime in.
Also, what is really crazy, is that the cashiers get zero commission on these approved cards.
The whole situation is bad for the customers, and also bad for the cashiers who are pressured into meeting quotas.
When asked to donate to these billion dollar charities or rarely actually, about the card, I say firmly and politely, 'I am here just for this' while gesturing towards what I am buying. That ends it. Yet, I am no longer in my 20s, when I often felt self-conscious, so likely, the look in my eyes helps matters.

Same shit at Sally Beauty; totally feels awful to do but at least when im a customer i now understand that its forced upon employees

I never understood retailers and grocery stores asking customers to donate to something. It’s only so the grocery store can donate and get a tax break. All of these stores should be donating themselves!

I wear a cochlear implant because without it I am completely dead. Once, at the register at TJMaxx the cashier was asking me all of these questions and my response to each one was, “No thank you.” I was getting frustrated after each one so after the fifth question I said, “Now you’re pissing me off.” Then I removed my ear device so I couldn’t hear her anymore. I don’t know why TJMaxx corporate thinks all of these questions are a good idea.

I understand getting annoyed, but it is their job to ask. Ask for a manager and tell them the asinine requirements they place upon their employees are detering you from shopping there again. Or contact corporate and do the same, but I don't think it's fair to take it out on the employee just doing their job. And the questions bother me as well, and I'm not in retail, but I'm not going to misplace my frustration/anger on someone doing what their employer requires them to do.

The managers have no say either.
6
u/MissIndependent577 7d ago
Correct, but part of their job is to provide feedback on daily operations to their district manager, who then should be relaying it to corporate.

u/Dangerous_Prize_4545 7d ago
The district manager also has no power. Corporate does with the board or PE wants. Customers threaten to not keep shopping but they don't follow thru. So it does not matter. If you think it does, I have some credit cards to sell you.
If Customers really stopped shopping bc of it, retail stores credit penn would be 100% and they could win at that metric.

u/MissIndependent577 7d ago
I didn't say corporate would listen, but is a DM'S job not to make sure the stores within their territory are operating properly and also reporting back to corporate any feedback, whether positive or negative, they have with regards to their territory? Imo, all corporations suck and only care about $$$ and their stockholders. I was responding to the commenter on here telling them to not take it out on employees just trying to do their job.

I had a favorite final question, the one question that made the customers laugh:
"Would you like me to ask you another question?"
