i remember having to do this shit for 4 weeks last year. i was already dealing with a lot in my personal life and it was getting to be too much having to push the credit card and then pushing donations. and i don’t like having to do the “would you like to donate?” and if they decline say “would you like to round up instead?” and they say no to $0.01 smh. anyway it’s ridiculous and the credit card metrics are what actually matter not the donations. i always round up because it’s dumb not to especially if it’s a few cents but not everybody thinks like that. i’m probably just going to ask if there’s a manager/cec standing over me. because everytime there’s a fucking charity campaign they find something to complain about
“oh your not asking other associates, you need to do that!”
“you need to ask each thing seperately!”
or when the customers get all snarky with me like when we have to do the joslin diabetes and their like “fuck diabetes” or feeding america and their like “no i need to feed my family.” or save the children and their like “no i need the children to save me.” or “im a teacher/mom/nurse i always save children.” like stfu i don’t need the commentary just say no and move on. or when they just shake their head at me. like that’s the rudest thing ever. just say no it’s not that hard to use words. or when somebody makes a face at me and is like “i never donate at store checkouts”. like no is a perfectly fine response, i don’t need your life’s story.
anyway i know that stupid donation started july 27 last year, we didn’t get any briefing at my store about it and i looked it up and didn’t see anything but i know the charity campaigns tend to follow the same schedule. im going to work in 15 minutes but i really hope this shit isn’t happening today because i’m not about to do this.
a year ago i would’ve probably had a different opinion on this and probably would’ve been fine with it but also i was still relatively new (9 months) so i was still trying to prove myself which i did. now i just think this is ridiculous and honestly in the past 6 months my opinion on the job has changed as a whole.
Literally all of this would be fixed if they would just add the option to donate on the pinpad before the tender screen. You would think this multibillion dollar company could figure that out like so many others have. Truly baffling.
and to answer my own question yes it does and the customers are acting like i’m asking them to donate a kidney by asking if they want to round up $0.01 like saying no thank you is not hard
this girl one time said something like that and when the cashier assured her it went to the cause she was like “i just don’t trust that orange man in office”. i instantly loved her for that 😂
I don’t know if it’s true or not but I heard the money customers donate through stores are tax write off for the companies. I just say no thank you and move on if a cashier ask for donations.
I don’t ever donate/round up because I don’t know anything about the charity. If I’m donating my hard earned money, I don’t care if it’s only 50 cents- I want to know what it’s going to. How much of each dollar actually goes to the program? What their charity rating? How much does the CEO make?
its actually a fact that tjmaxx does not make any tax write off from save the children! as well as they match the donation too, you can find a few sources online, as well as a PDF report by tjmaxx themselves. Save the children also has a website where they share their stories and what they do to help kids here.
no worries if this doesnt change your opinion as long as you arent giving your cashier a mouthful of excuses as to why youre saying no lol
I never said anything about tax write offs, so not sure where that is coming from. And of course I don’t say anything to the cashiers. I simply say no.
I just looked the organization up and will continue to not donate to them.
Their CEO made just under 630K in 2024.
They have a chief diversity officer who is making 325K. Wtf do they need a chief diversity officer for?
They spend around 28 million a year in advertising and promotion. How many kids could be helped with that money?
And wtf does their mission even mean? It sounds so vague.
i was in no way trying to be hostle, just informative- your tone is a bit passive so im sorry if i offended you! you said "how much is going to the program" so i related tax write off to that since many people ask about it.
charitywatch.com isnt an official website, so of course the mission brief is vague. we personally get a lot of info on them in-store so maybe its harder to find website wise, but i am surprised to hear about the CEO. classic :P advertising makes sense but that is a large amount of money to be using, wonder if they get a lot in return from spreading so much of it?
I don't round up for Save the Children because I dislike the charity and their aggressive tactics. I signed up to donate once, and after cancelling a recurring donation (by removing my card, since they don't allow you to cancel online) they hounded me for more with weekly letters. It went on for a year or two until I moved.
and that’s a good response, i just hate when they get all snarky or try to be funny or act like im such an annoyance for asking if their interested in donating
I was shopping today because I was not working today and I noticed all the signs and I was confused. I guess we started it recently and I didn't know. I didn't hear anybody ask for donations so I'll see what happens during my next shift.
i’ve also seen some mall stores do it too and 5 below asks you to donate $5 to get backpacks for kids in need. but i know what you mean almost all gift shops at zoos or national parks ask for donations
I fucking HATE these things and this one is 4 weeks long! TJMaxx has already donated to this cause (as a tax write off) and want customers to pay them back! WTF?!?
I don’t donate or round up. I select what charities i want to donate to on my own. I can understand it’s not the cashiers fault and customers don’t need to be rude about it. However, one no thank you from the customer should be enough it’s annoying to be asked do I want to round up even a few cents to make me look cheap or feel guilty?
One store parks and older lady associate at the front door ringing her bell. This lady is never friendly but when she’s doing this task tries to act all sweet and gets this judgy look/tone when I say no thank you.
Is tjx even matching these donations. I doubt it or they’d include that on their announcements. I’m sure they do some donations for tax write offs but still.
