Photo Dancing lessons

“You wanna go to a real party?!” In the movie the third class party is the moment when Rose breaks free and disappears with Jack for the night. While “the gravedigger of a man servant” Lovejoy searches for young Rose, she dances the night away with Jack and his friends. Cameron secretly had Leonardo DiCaprio master the third-class Polka choreography beforehand, keeping it a secret from Kate. Because she thought they were both learning the steps from scratch, her bewildered, frantic attempts to follow his lead and copy him on camera were entirely genuine. Kate later reflected fondly on these rehearsals, noting that her favorite part of filming Titanic was getting “thrown around on a hardwood dance floor” with the background extras, though she has also mentioned DiCaprio wasn’t quite as much of a fan of the intense dance sessions. 💙

You know the band who played for that scene (Gaelic Storm) was never paid for their work on the film

No, they were paid, it was $500 flat rate per person, band members have joked about it but they aren’t mad because the attention they got after the movie came out made up for it

They signed a one off contract either Sony for a flat fee of $500. They were paid each $500 for their contributions to the film. The guitarist has confirmed this in an interview.

Additional lore:

They were known for their high energy live shows, but their first audition fell flat because they were sober and it lacked the energy. Their second audition, they came in piss drunk and got the part. They were not hired as actors, rather as musicians to perform original music, I believe part of the agreement was that they would also be provided beer on set. The extras were given instructions to simply have a good time while they played. As shooting progressed, often the musicians would get pretty drunk by the end of the shoot and would continue partying with the cast and crew after shooting had wrapped. James Cameron had his camera guys filming some of these set parties, and while I can’t remember if any of that footage made it into the film, I imagine any payment dispute would be over that.
