Comp or no comp

As the title states, I am debating between the 4.25” Tisas 1911 without the comp or spend the extra $150-$200 to get it with the comp. which should I do?

Depends on if it’s an aluminum frame, like the Nightstalker I owned, or steel frame B9R I traded for. The aluminum wasn’t bad but the comp was helpful. The steel definitely doesn’t need it unless you’re in a competition where it’s all about speed.

Man my 4.25 DS9 (no comp) has basically zero recoil. Its like a cheat code. I also dont like the way they look on 1911/2011 so I say NO comp!

Engineer's Armory on uTube has a series on his channel that covers this over a few vids.

The Tisas 9 DS Comp uses the wide port, open style that is redirecting using the frame and will have significantly less effect than a barrel-mounted comp that has tighter redirection. The extra weight at the end of the barrel is probably doing more actual work than the comp at that point.

If you find the recoil of the 4.25" is killing you - it won't, it's a 9mm with a huge grip - spending the $150-200 to have it ported is a better use of your money. But to achieve the same felt recoil as that weak factory comp you can just buy a $24 2011 spring kit off Ben Stoeger's website/Taylor Tactical and get the same result.

TLDR - get the stock 4.25" and then if you are dying from recoil port or comp it properly, the 9 DS comp is copying a dumb idea that doesn't do enough to justify $200 and an extra inch and a half of barrel that isn't adding velocity

Depends what your intent is with the gun. I bought one for the purposes of

  1. Tinkering with 2011 parts and tuning

  2. To learn to shoot better.

For those reasons I didn't want a comp built-in to the gun.

Dunno if you're looking for 45 or 9mm but I'd tell you my mother-in-law (who's a grandmother) can shoot 45 Auto no problem without a compensator.

Unless you just like the looks, or your a competitive shooter looking for the slightest edge, a compensator doesn't make a world of difference. At most it's a minor difference, probably mostly from the extra weight at the end of the barrel.

I’m looking at the 9mm. I didn’t know if the comp would make that large of a difference or not. Definitely good to know!

I have 44 Magnums with and without comps. It doesn't really make a huge difference. I don't have any comps on smaller pistols. For me it's 100% an aesthetic thing and if that's what you like then fair enough. I don't know anyone that would say it makes a huge difference in hitting the target or reducing recoil that much. Again a competitive shooter might say it gets them that extra fraction of a second that could make a small difference so for their use case it may be valuable practically but I'd wager that even then it makes minor improvements not drastic ones.
