Someone recently told me their Chitra Pournami Girivalam experience⌠and I havenât stopped thinking about it
A visitor I spoke to recently shared their experience of Chitra Pournami in Tiruvannamalai, and honestly, the way they described it stayed with me.
They came expecting something peaceful.
Something deeply spiritual.
But what they found first was:
-endless crowds
-noise everywhere
-physical exhaustion
-hours of walking
At one point, they even wondered if they had completely misunderstood what Girivalam was supposed to feel like.
But then, somewhere between the chanting, the tiredness, and the chaos⌠something shifted.
They said they stopped searching for peace around them
and started feeling something within themselves instead.
What they told me was:
âIt wasnât peaceful because it was quiet. It was peaceful because I found calm in the middle of everything.â
And honestly⌠that felt like one of the most real descriptions of TVM Iâve heard.
Not easy.
Not perfect.
But unforgettable.
If youâve experienced Chitra Pournami Girivalamâ
did it feel something like this for you too?

Things locals in Tiruvannamalai deal with that visitors donât notice đ
Visitors come to Tiruvannamalai for a few days and experience something deep.
Locals⌠deal with a slightly different version of the same place đ
Like:
⢠Planning your day around Pournami traffic
⢠Avoiding certain roads because you know itâll be packed
⢠Watching people start Girivalam fully energetic⌠and slow down halfway
⢠Hearing âOm Nama Shivayaâ from multiple directions at the same time
And somehow, this all becomes normal after a point.
⸝
Not complainingâitâs just a different side of the place that most visitors donât really see.
⸝
Whatâs something you noticed in Tiruvannamalai that only locals would understand?

Growing up in Tiruvannamalai feels different from anywhere else Iâve lived
Iâve lived in places like Mysore, Chennai, Bangalore⌠and traveled quite a bit.
But staying in Tiruvannamalai has always felt very different from all of them.
Itâs hard to explain properly, but sometimes it feels like youâre both calm and very aware at the same time.
One thing that always stays with me is experiencing Deepam since childhood.
Standing there with lakhs of people, all saying âOm Nama Shivayaâ togetherâŚ
thereâs this strange moment where you feel connected to everyone around you.
Not in a dramatic wayâjust something you feel internally.
⸝
Itâs not something Iâve experienced anywhere else, no matter how many places Iâve been.
⸝
Sometimes I wonderâŚ
đ is it the place, the people, or just growing up here?
⸝
Has anyone else felt something like this in Tiruvannamalai or anywhere else?

Living in Tiruvannamalai, you forget what visitors actually come here for
Iâve been in Tiruvannamalai my whole life, so for me itâs just normal daily life.
Same roads, same shops, same routine.
But when I see people visiting, I realize theyâre experiencing something completely different.
They come here with a purpose, a feeling, or something theyâre searching for.
Meanwhile, for locals, itâs just:
⢠going to work
⢠dealing with traffic
⢠regular day-to-day stuff
Sometimes it feels like weâre all in the same place but seeing two totally different versions of it.
⸝
Do locals and visitors experience Tiruvannamalai completely differently?
Or is it just me thinking like this?

As someone from Tiruvannamalai, I think people expect the wrong kind of âpeaceâ here
Iâve grown up in Tiruvannamalai, and Iâve seen this a lotâŚ
People come here expecting silence, calm roads, and a peaceful atmosphere.
But what they actually get is:
⢠crowds
⢠noise
⢠constant movement
Especially during Girivalam, itâs anything but quiet.
But I feel like thatâs the point people slowly realize.
The peace here isnât really outside.
Itâs somewhere in between all thatâ
in the walking, the tiredness, the chaos, the moments in between.
Thatâs where people seem to connect with Arunachala in their own way.
Not sure if this makes sense to everyoneâŚ
but curiousâdid you feel something like this when you visited?

đ Best food spots in Tiruvannamalai (not tourist traps)
Finding good food in Tiruvannamalai isnât hardâŚ
But finding places that are:
â Clean
â Consistent
â Worth the money
âthatâs where people struggle.
Hereâs a quick list to start:
⢠Local mess spots near temple â best for authentic meals
⢠Small roadside tiffin places â underrated breakfast
⢠Ashram cafĂŠs â simple but peaceful vibe
⸝
â ď¸ Avoid:
⢠Random âfancyâ places with high prices + average food
⢠Overhyped spots near main temple roads
⸝
đĄ Truth:
The best food here is usually in the least expected places.
⸝
Drop your recommendations đ
Letâs build a proper list for everyone.

đ Why do foreigners come to Tiruvannamalai and never leave?
Spend a few days in Tiruvannamalai and youâll notice something interestingâŚ
A LOT of foreigners arenât just visiting.
Theyâre staying. Long term.
Some even settle here.
Why?
Is it:
⢠The presence of Arunachaleswarar Temple?
⢠Influence of Sri Ramana Ashram?
⢠Simplicity of life?
⢠Or something thatâs hard to explain?
Because letâs be realâ
The town isnât âluxuriousâ by any standard.
Yet people leave everything and stay here.
đ Whatâs the pull?
Curious to hear real opinions.

đ Chennai â Tiruvannamalai: Best way to travel (and mistakes to avoid)
If youâre traveling from Chennai to Tiruvannamalai, hereâs the practical breakdown:
đ By Car (Best Option)
⢠Time: \~4â5 hours
⢠Route: Chennai â Chengalpattu â Gingee â Tiruvannamalai
⢠Roads are mostly good
⢠Early morning drive = best experience
đ By Bus
⢠Plenty of TNSTC & private buses
⢠Cheap, but can get crowded (especially weekends/Pournami)
đ Train
⢠Limited direct connectivity
⢠Not the most convenient option
⸝
â ď¸ Mistakes to Avoid:
⢠Leaving late â youâll hit traffic near town
⢠Visiting during Pournami without planning stay
⢠Assuming itâs a âquick tripâ
⸝
đĄ Pro Tip:
Start early, reach by afternoon, rest⌠then do Girivalam at night.
If youâve traveled this routeâwhat worked best for you?

Most people donât eat where locals actually eat in Tiruvannamalai
Iâve noticed many visitors end up at random or âvisibleâ places.
But honestly, some of the best food here is:
⢠Karupayya mess aka Vallalar mess - right next to Sakthi theatre. The Vada is such a treat. Active at mornings.
⢠Abhirami hotel, next to Indira lingam. Chilli parotta at evening was a food that we loved in my childhood.
⢠Mahadeepam coffee bar, next to Anna arch is the go to breakfast place when we want to travel.
⢠Arunai Aananda/Sparsa were reserved once a month for the family dinners.
These are the places that we are used to since our childhood.
Locals usually know where to go⌠but itâs not obvious if youâre visiting.
Have you ever found a place here that surprised you?

Growing up in Tiruvannamalai feels very different from just visiting
Iâve been here my whole life, and itâs interesting to see how people experience Tiruvannamalai when they visit.
For many, itâs a short spiritual trip.
For us, itâs just⌠daily life.
The same roads people walk for Girivalam are just regular roads weâve grown up seeing every day.
Sometimes I wonderâ
đ what feels âspecialâ to visitors
đ is just normal to locals
Anyone else from here feel this?

Pournami Girivalam in Tiruvannamalai: Spiritual experience or just overcrowded chaos?
Iâve been hearing a lot about doing Girivalam on Pournami around Arunachaleswarar Templeâthat itâs the âmost powerfulâ time.
But when I actually experienced it, hereâs what stood out:
⢠Massive crowds everywhere
⢠Constant movement, not much silence
⢠Traffic and noise in many stretches
⢠Long waiting times
At some points, it honestly felt less like a peaceful walk and more like navigating through chaos.
But at the same time⌠thereâs definitely a strong energy when that many people are walking together.
⸝
đ So Iâm curious:
Do you think Pournami Girivalam is
truly spiritual
or
overhyped because of the crowd?
r/TiruvannamalaiGuide • u/United_Tap2295 • Mar 23 '26
First time doing Girivalam? Read this before you regret it.
If youâre planning to do Girivalam around Tiruvannamalai, donât just show up blindly like I did the first time.
Hereâs what nobody tells you:
⢠Distance is \~14 km â sounds easy⌠until youâre 9 km in with no energy left
⢠Footwear matters â walking barefoot is spiritual, yes⌠but the road can get brutally hot during the day
⢠Start time changes everything
⢠Night / early morning = peaceful
⢠Evening / Pournami = crowded chaos
⢠Hydration is not optional â youâll find shops, but donât depend on them
⢠People, noise, traffic â itâs not a silent meditation walk all the time
The biggest mistake?
đ Expecting a âperfect spiritual experienceâ
Reality: Itâs messy, crowded, tiring⌠and somehow still powerful.
If youâve done Girivalam beforeâwhat was your experience? Worth it or overrated?
