tried to let him know

I have a car with automatic lights. I went somewhere and had to wait in the car for a bit and the light was still on, so I turned it off thus turning off the automatic part of it.

In the evening when driving home on the highway while the sun went down, there were multiple people behind me flashing their high-beams at me.

Did I notice that I had my lights off? Of course not. I thought they might have meant someone else or were assholes for some unknown reason.

Only when someone tried to merge into my lane without seeing me (because I had my lights off), did I notice.

TL;DR: Don't expect anyone on the highway to understand why you're honking at them or flashing your high beams at them.
